YOUNG footballers from Winklebury Wizards raised more than £1,000 for charity by taking part in a football assault course.

Members of the club’s under-10 team each covered a total of 5km while completing a range of football challenges, including dribbling between posts, hitting the crossbar and beating a goalkeeper.

They were sponsored and raised a total of £1,034 for St Michael’s Hospice, with the club donating a further £200 to the cause.

The youngsters took part in memory of Anna Sadler, the mother of one of the players, Matthew, who sadly lost her battle with cancer earlier this year.

Bruce Tydeman and Mark Taylor, the team’s coaches, said: “Everyone at the club wanted to do something for Matthew’s mum and we came up with the idea of doing a football assault course to make things more interesting for the boys.

“Initially, we were hoping to raise around £800 through sponsorship, but the boys exceeded that easily. We are really proud of them, especially as it rained really hard on the morning of the event.

“They all really enjoyed it and everyone involved is delighted that we have raised so much money for the charity.”
