A hard-luck story for Saints this afternoon, as they deserved something out of this game. Still, there is encouragement to take from what was a largely excellent performance. Thanks for joining us today. We will have a report and reaction for you on the website as soon as it becomes available.
LIVERPOOL 2 SAINTS 1
CHANCE (88 mins): Saints should be level. Graziano Pelle chests down a looped ball into the box, cushioning it into the path of Morgan Schneiderlin. He strikes a left-footed effort that is tipped brilliantly by Simon Mignolet and hits the underside of the bar, bouncing just the wrong side of the line. The rebound is met by the head of Shane Long six yards out, but he nods wide with the goal seemingly at his mercy. [2-1]
CHANCE (86 mins): Lloyd Isgrove's throw into the area is chested by Graziano Pelle into the path of James Ward-Prowse. The midfielder sends in a well-struck first-time shot that Simon Mignolet saves at his near post. [2-1]
SAINTS: Steven Davis off, Lloyd Isgrove on (82 mins)
LIVERPOOL 2 SAINTS 1 (Daniel Sturridge 79)
This is so harsh on Saints, after the way they have played this half. A cross is swung over from the right, which the visitors fail to clear properly. Raheem Sterling nods a loose ball back towards goal, and Daniel Sturridge is there at the far post with a faint touch to send it into the bottom corner.
Steven Davis receives a yellow card for a foul on Jordan Henderson (78 mins)
LIVERPOOL: Philippe Coutinho off, Rickie Lambert on (76 mins)
SAINTS: Dusan Tadic off, Shane Long on (73 mins)
Morgan Schneiderlin cautioned for a late challenge on Philippe Coutinho (65 mins)
LIVERPOOL: Lucas off, Joe Allen on (63 mins)
CHANCE (63 mins): Saints miss a glorious opportunity to take the lead. Great interchange from Dusan Tadic and James Ward-Prowse leads to the latter feeding the ball into the path of Steven Davis, who is all alone just inside the area. The midfielder tries to roll the ball back into the far corner, but Simon Mignolet dives low to his right to save. Davis holds his head in his hands. [1-1]
LIVERPOOL 1 SAINTS 1 (Nathaniel Clyne 56)
A stunning goal brings Saints level, and it is well deserved, given how brightly they have started the second half. Dusan Tadic's sublime back heel pass puts in Nathaniel Clyne and he lashes a right-foot shot into the top corner.
CHANCE (55 mins): Steven Davis gets onto a loose ball just outside the box and rolls a square pass into the path of Victor Wanyama. The Kenyan skews his right-foot shot well wide, however. [1-0]
CHANCE (53 mins): Saints have started the second half on the front foot, pressing Liverpool back. They are yet to create an opening, though, with the Reds having the first attempt since the break. But it is not one that ever had a chance of troubling Fraser Forster, as Raheem Sterling blazes well off target from 25 yards. [1-0]
The second half is underway.
Dejan Lovren was given a less than warm reception by Saints fans.
LIVERPOOL 1 SAINTS 0
CHANCE (45+2 mins): Fraser Forster beats away a fierce 20-yard shot from Raheem Sterling. [1-0]
CHANCE (45+1 mins): Dusan Tadic takes a throw-in down the left-hand side into the feet of Graziano Pelle. He's tackled, but the ball runs to Morgan Schneiderlin 20 yards out. He hits a well-struck, swerving effort that is dipping in, only for Simon Mignolet to acrobatically palm it over the bar. The Liverpool keeper then claims the resulting corner. [1-0]
CHANCE (40 mins): Jose Fonte pushes on into the Liverpool half and plays a pass into the feet of James Ward-Prowse just outside the area. He lines up a right-footed effort, but it's a long way from his best, as he curls it weakly into the arms of a grateful Simon Mignolet. [1-0]
CHANCE (34 mins): After Dusan Tadic is fouled out on the left by Javier Manquillo, James Ward-Prowse delivers an in-swinging free-kick that nearly ends up dipping into the far top corner, only for Simon Mignolet to push it over. The resulting corner come to nothing. [1-0]
Javier Manquillo booked for a late tackle on Dusan Tadic (34 mins)
LIVERPOOL 1 SAINTS 0 (Raheem Sterling 23)
Jordan Henderson wins a 50-50 challenge with Morgan Schneiderlin on the halfway line, looks up and plays a superb curling through pass that picks out the run of Raheem Sterling. He makes no mistake, rolling the ball past Fraser Forster and into the bottom corner.
CHANCE (21 mins): A nice little move from Liverpool creates an opening for them. Philippe Coutinho's clever pass inside picks out the run of Raheem Sterling, who drives into the area and sends in a left-foot shot that is straight at Fraser Forster. [0-0]
Dutch legend Ronald Koeman got an early chance to show his skills on the touchline.
CHANCE (9 mins): Another effort from Liverpool, but, again, it's a fairly tame effort, as Martin Skrtel flicks a near-post header goalwards from Steven Gerrard's corner. The ball bounces off the turf and straight into the grasp of Fraser Forster. [0-0]
CHANCE (7 mins): Saints will be pleased with how they have settled into the game. Liverpool's first effort comes from Daniel Sturridge, but his left-footed strike from 25 yards slices wide of the post. Ronald Koeman's side will be pleased if they can restrict the Reds to those kind of shots. [0-0]

That's the warm-ups over here at Anfield. Both teams have gone back to the dressing rooms, with former Saint Rickie Lambert getting a big round of applause from both the home and away fans as he disappeared down the tunnel. Dejan Lovren is not enjoying such a warm reception from the Saints supporters, though, as he is vociferously booed by them.
It has been quite a transfer window at Saints this summer. It is nearly at an end, though, with just two weeks left before it shuts. While it looked at one point as if the club might be scrambling around for signings right at the end, it appears their business is almost over already, following a flurry of arrivals. There may be a little bit to be done yet, however, with boss Ronald Koeman targeting "one or two" more players - with a winger the main priority.
Romanian international Florin Gardos this week became Saints' seventh signing of the summer. The centre-back, who joined in a £6m deal from Steaua Bucharest, will have to wait a few weeks for his debut, though, as he recovers from a hamstring injury. He is likely to be the last central defender to be signed by the club before the transfer window closes, according to Ronald Koeman.

Ronald Koeman, meanwhile, hands competitive debuts to Fraser Forster, Ryan Bertrand, Dusan Tadic and Graziano Pelle. Fellow new signings Saphir Taider and Shane Long are on the bench. For Liverpool, ex-Saint Dejan Lovren starts in the centre of defence, while Rickie Lambert is among the subs.

Team news is coming up in just over ten minutes. The big question today is whether Ronald Koeman will play Morgan Schneiderlin. The midfielder has been hankering for a move away from St Mary's this summer, with Tottenham having failed in a £10m bid for him. Having been allowed to miss last weekend's friendly against Bayer Leverkusen, after declaring he was not "physically or mentally" prepared, Schneiderlin returned to training this week with a brand new attitude, according to his manager, Ronald Koeman, who says he has now accepted he will not be sold.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has had a few kind words to say about Ronald Koeman in today's matchday programme:
He is someone who is steeped in the best traditions of the game and we know his side will reflect his values - of exciting, well-organised, attacking football. Although this will be Ronald's first experience of management in this country, he has someone alongside him who is as experienced and knowledgable as they come, in terms of the English game. It's great to welcome Sammy Lee back to Anfield as part of the Southampton coaching staff. He has Liverpool in his DNA and has served the club with distinction as both a player and a coach.Brendan Rodgers
Saints enjoyed a famous win at this ground last season, with Dejan Lovren's second-half goal earning them a 1-0 win early in the campaign. Lovren, of course, will be lining up for the home side today, having completed a £20m switch to Liverpool earlier this summer. He is one of two former Saints players who could feature for the Reds this afternoon, along with Rickie Lambert. There will be no appearance for Adam Lallana, however, with the midfielder having to wait a few weeks yet for his Liverpool debut, as a result of injury.
Hello and welcome to the new season! Saints kick-off their campaign this afternoon with a trip to Anfield, with the game representing the start of a brand new era for the club. Ronald Koeman will take charge of his first league game as Saints boss, while there could be competitive debuts for Fraser Forster, Ryan Bertrand, Saphir Taider, Dusan Tadic, Graziano Pelle and Shane Long. To add a bit of extra spice to the encounter, Liverpool could field former Saints stars Rickie Lambert and Dejan Lovren. Stay with us throughout the afternoon for build-up, team news and match updates.
