£27m ex-Saint on sidelines for start of season

Luke Shaw in his Southampton days

Luke Shaw in his Southampton days

First published in Sport

Luke Shaw is set for a spell on the sidelines after Manchester United confirmed the left-back would miss the start of the Barclays Premier League season with a hamstring injury.

Shaw, who joined the club from Southampton in June for £27million, faces a four-week lay-off, meaning he will miss United’s opening league game against Swansea on Saturday.

The 19-year-old, who became the world’s most expensive teenage footballer when he made the move to Old Trafford, could also miss further Premier League games against Sunderland and Burnley.

Shaw made his United debut against LA Galaxy in July during their summer tour of North America.

Isn't this the same LB that played for Saints a while ago? The one we got a nice big fat payday on? As I seem to recall, he was very injury prone while at SFC. I also seem to recall he kept missing out on his international U-21 and U-17 call-ups due to his constant injuries. My my, 27M for him? Imagine how much Man U would have paid for a healthy LB that was not so injury prone.

Interesting that Lallana and Shaw both get injured as they train with their new clubs - either shows trying too hard to impress or their training methods not as good as Saints.

Either way, who cares????????

Interesting though....as soon as Shaw arrived at ManUre he was assessed as unfit and ordered to train alone. That really makes me wonder about our Staplewood training facility, with its multi-million pound Olympic standard individual "sports science" monitoring of each player's blood flow, stamina, lung capacity, etc.

When MoPo went to Spurs there was an article (in the Telegraph, I think) about his style and training methods. It said he made our players do double training sessions, with the outcome that they were so tired that they had to sleep for the rest of the day. That made me think of how many points we lost from winning positions as we tired towards the end of games... it seems to me that MoPo did not understand how to use our training facilities properly. If you want a smart bet, put money on Spurs conceding late goals in games this season.

My guess is that the injuries are psychosomatic. They have realised the error of their ways - leaving a brilliant, supportive, REAL football club to go to be slaves to big business. It would make anyone want a few duvet days.

This is clearly an over training injury. The recent comment on him being unfit has resulted in too much too soon and they've blown it for a few weeks. Aaah Shame.

Van Goolie may come over all imperious but this is a mistake by him or his coaching staff ... I think their team may not be quite the force they are predicting ... but then again who cares?
