Southampton set to confirm signing of Steaua Bucharest defender Florin Gardos, but Leeds full-back Sam Byram will not be joining

Saints are expected to make Florin Gardos their sixth signing of the summer within the next 24 hours – but Sam Byram looks unlikely to be the seventh new face at St Mary’s.

Gardos will arrive from Steaua Bucharest for a fee of about £6m, as a replacement for Dejan Lovren.

He will almost certainly not be joined by Leeds defender Byram, however.

The 20-year-old right-back had been identified last month as an option to provide cover for Nathaniel Clyne, following Calum Chambers’ £16m move to Arsenal.

However, despite being willing to pay £4.5m for the player, Saints’ attempted advances were ignored by the Championship club.

It is believed that they have since decided to not to pursue the matter and will instead provide cover for Clyne from within the squad.

The club are not blessed with natural options in that position, beyond their number-one choice, but Jack Cork has experience of playing the position and represents a solid alternative.

The back line is set to receive a significant boost as early as today, though, with Gardos due to finalise his move.

His capture is seen as one of the last key signings ahead of the new season.

The 25-year-old Romanian international arrives as a replacement for Lovren, who was sold to Liverpool for £20m this summer.

Assuming his move goes through as anticipated, Gardos is set to line-up on the opposite side to his predecessor on Sunday, when Saints visit Anfield.

He will become the partner for Jose Fonte in the heart of defence, with the newly-appointed team captain having operated alongside either Yoshida or Jos Hooiveld in pre-season.

The arrival of Gardos effectively signals the end of Saints’ interest in Sporting Lisbon defender Marcos Rojo, with the Argentine international now reportedly the subject of a bid from Manchester United.

As well as another striker, with Hull's Shane Long a target, Saints are also considering adding an additional wide player if they can find a suitable option.

Gardos seems solid, for £6m its a good deal.
Personally, I like Shane Long as a signing. Assuming that the fee would be more like £7m + extras up to a total of £12m, it seems a decent price for the sort of player we need.
Would like to have a backup RB though, what about young Jack Stephens?

Fans keep bleating on about more signings and seem to forget that we have one of the best academies in Europe, unlike the chelski's and mankie citeh's of this country we do promote from our academy, and all the time we do we will attract more and more top level youth players, my only wish would be that if they come to us they cannot leave us for a direct competitor

It seems like we are getting the right players in, but about a month too late, but then again, we did not think we would need to scout so many players before the new season started! But we do need a back up right back, someone with a bit more experience would be good.
Shane Long, doesn't get enough goals to warrant a £12,000,000 price tag, runs the channels well, works hard but not worth that amount of money.
And sharp off to Leeds, good luck to him, don't think he was treated very well by previous manager, so let's hope he really kicks on and starts performing like he did for us in the championship.
Don't know too much about this florin bloke but if he is anything like lovren, on the pitch not like a spoilt brat off it! then 6million is a great bit of business.
A blend of youth and experience and new faces will really a fresh new impetus to Southampton this season, so bring on the dirty scousers.
Just one more thing to sort, spider. Put your toys back in your pram and honour your contract.

With Celtic taking a CB, from Citeh, on loan for the season, it would be good to try and get van Dijk in.

Seed, you are right; it is a mess. It's been weeks that we, and more importantly, the Board knew the areas in which we need to strengthen. We still need a LB, another CB, a pacey winger and a 20 goals striker. And a RB. God knows why we sold Callum, who can also play CB.

Interesting point about Long. I've just done a quick Wiki comparison between him and Jay. Jay scores about once every three games, Long scores about once every four games. Make of that what you will; I have mixed feelings but he is the kind of player we need right now.

More concerning, if true, is what Baz has read about Gardos. I hope we sign a CB soon but sure as hell is hot, it's already too late for Sunday.

It was a mess in January when we had no Board, a manager and players unhappy £22miliion in deferred transfer payments and considerable debt to be paid on the training ground which had also ran financial out of control ................. and most importantly an owner who was not happy with the way the clubs was running and no guarantee she would support the mess the club had become.

Add to that no corporate vision at all ! no respect for History or the supporters , NOW THAT WAS A MESS !

Now I will be happy if this year we survive and play good football so we can build both as a club and a Football team next year ......... I think we may well do better than that but lets wait and see ..................

Absolutelly right. I believe Spewcastle have signed 9 senior players already and are still looking for more.

For all we know Rambo might even have a 3rd striker in mind - nobody knows other than the gossip specualation. Gossip today seems to have us linked with Ginabry and Bianianby (spelling?) Who knows for sure there are managers everywhere throwing up smokescreens, talking blx, keeping schtum - it's all part of the smoke and mirrors and it will get more heated the close the end date gets. I just don't understand the doom merchants. It's almost like they will be willing us to lose every home game just so they can say I was right all along. I don't get it!

Hold on a sec I haven't slagged anyone off (mainly because I'm not a teenage girl) I've only offered the opinion that we're not as strong as we were because we've let a number of first teamers who knew the team and league go and replaced them with individuals new to the team league. I don't think anyone can say whether our current squad will be better or worse than what we had at the beginning of last season....only time will provide the answers .
Yes we have sold 5 of our best players from last season but it may well be that we have replaced them with 6 equally good players for half of the cost . We have bought 2 players who have played for England , one Serbian International and the leading Dutch league scorer amongst others.
Koeman to me has an incredible record both as a Manager and as a player and I believe he will do a great job for Saints.
It may take a few weeks for the players to adapt to one another but I am very optimistic that at worst we will finish the season in 12 th position and anything is possible ...only time will tell.

Strass, Jack Stephens is the answer. Chin up fellow Saint.
What games you going to this year? We will have to meet up for a beer in the usual rendezvous.
U.T.S.
Not yet sure, Mack. How about you? Hull away maybe the first, although I'm 50-50 on QPR next month. Will let you, Slugger, Bill and Seed know.

Of course, if by then we're top of the league, Long is in double figures, Pelle is top of the assists and Ron is in line for his second manager-of-the-month award, the drinks will be on Seed.

If that happens the drinks will be on me.
Doing Swansea hoping to do Spurs.
Back in Blighty next month in time for Newcastle.
Q.P.R. sounds good. If we dont manage to meet up I will see you at Wembley.

Came back today, apparently.
Steady president quoted as saying paperwork would be done in a few minutes, and that was 1 hour ago.
Hopefully now completed the signing.

It is shame about interest cooling in the Leeds Defender - as well as a Winger as then we really would have a good selection of signings sand be good at GK - in Defence- Midfield and Attack and still have some pennies in the bank.

Defence remains the one key weak area. COYR+WS
