JUSTIN Rose finished in a tie for 24th place at the PGA Championship, golf’s final major of the year.

The north Hampshire golfer moved up eight places thanks to a final round of 67 (-4) at Valhalla, in Kentucky, ending the event on -8, eight shots behind champion Rory McIlroy.

Rose was five shots off the lead after the first day, making birdies at his final three holes to card an opening round of 70 (-1), but his chances of winning were effectively ended during the second round.

The 34-year-old was four-over-par for the round through 12 holes and while he hit back, making birdies at four of the last six holes, a one-over-par round of 72 left him nine shots off the lead going into the weekend.

Rose found his form during the last two rounds, recording two scores of 67 (-4) to move up the leaderboard, but he was unable to go low enough to mount a serious challenge to McIlroy, who won his second consecutive major.

World number five Rose has a week off before getting his FedEx Cup Play-off challenge under way. The first tournament of the four-event play-off series, The Barclays, begins at Ridgewood CC, in New Jersey, next Thursday, with the former Robert May’s School pupil sitting 17th in the standings.
