Southampton intend to have a stronger and deeper squad when the transfer window closes than they did last season, says chairman Ralph Krueger

Saints plan to be stronger than last season, says Krueger

Saints are confident of ending the transfer window with a squad that is stronger and deeper than the one that finished last season, chairman Ralph Krueger has said ahead of the imminent arrival of Saphir Taider.

The Inter Milan midfielder is set to join the club on an initial loan deal on Wednesday, with striker Dani Osvaldo heading in the opposite direction.

Taider, a 22-year-old Algerian international, will represent the fourth signing of the summer at Saints, following Dusan Tadic, Graziano Pelle and Ryan Bertrand into St Mary’s.

Krueger told the Daily Echo: “Saphir is an exciting prospect. He’s multi-dimensional and there’s a lot of opportunity in him.

“He’s at an age that fits in with the Southampton situation at present. I think he’s somebody that we can really bring to another level.”

Krueger also reiterated the club’s stance that Morgan Schneiderlin and Jay Rodriguez would not be sold this summer, despite interest from Tottenham.

He revealed that no action had been taken against Schneiderlin, after he wrote on Twitter that his “amazing” six-year journey at the club had been “destroyed” – a message that came after the board informed him that he would not be allowed to leave.

“To the tweet that went out, I believe everybody is human,” said Krueger.

“It’s the passion of the game, whether it’s from a player or a fan or whatever. We need to understand that’s possible, to just have knee-jerk reactions, so we didn’t take any major issues on that, but we’ve been clear in our communication.”

Krueger confirmed Saints’ transfer business is not done, and added that the club would like to add more players to the first-team squad than they have lost this summer.

He also reaffirmed that the board have a mandate to reinvest all money made from player sales into the squad, whether that be via transfer fees or wages.

“We come from a very thin squad that we would like to evolve into a deeper squad,” he said.

“That’s our goal, by September 1st, that you can look me in the eyes and say ‘When I look at everything, and I take all the emotions out, this is actually a stronger squad, a deeper squad than we had last year.’

“That’s what we’re working on, every single day now. It’s not done, we’re still in that process.”

Krueger added: “I feel confident about it.

"It’s dangerous to promise anything. All I can say is we’re working really hard to have the club in a position where it’s in a healthier position than last year.

“So that would mean we definitely need a few more transfers in, and we’re working hard at that.

“But we’re really excited with what we have been able to already put together, with Bertrand, with Pelle, with Tadic, now with Taider coming in – I think there’s a certain strength coming into the squad too right now.”

He does speak with motivation and uses the word 'positive' frequently in his ramblings, however, if he puts his money where his mouth is I'm sure most fans will be happier.
A CB is a must, Jos and Yosh haven't shown EPL quality yet, however, I think Koeman is keen on starting with Isgrove (played well at Brighton) McQueen ( played well in Belgium) and Reed. Not sure if he'll start with all, but I think all will be in first team squad come beginning of season.
Can't wait for the Saints rollercoaster season to start.

I love your passion, and I'm sure that the board will deliver, perhaps a bit more long term than "the Don" was promising, but as long as we keep progressing that cant be a bad thing. can it?

You cant say we have no ambition after employing the manager that we have just done, if they just wanted to "tread water" then there are loads of mundane managers out there that we could have appointed.

You sound just like me 40 years ago, take that as a compliment ;-)

How has this stripped more goals from the squad when Osvaldo wasn't ever planning on coming back as was shown by his actions? Goals don't come by osmosis in the EPL. We all need to give the club time to fulfill their promise of new GOOD signings. Time will tell and come September 1 RK will have to have put his money where his mouth is. I for one one will remain optimistic that he will come through on his promises. He is risking an awful lot if he's not being truthful with his statements. My only fear is his valuation of "good" signings. I would certainly like to see at least one marquee signing with all that money we earned from sales.

Well, that's the sort of statement I like - yes, he still has to deliver, but we now know for certain that the plan is to deliver, and not for KL to take the money and run.

And a more competitive squad than last year, that doesn't have the MoPo Achilles heel of no plan B and no real account taken of how the other team will play, and with players who aren't running round Anfield in a Saints shirt thinking "I wish I played for them" and so might win some of the many games that were there for the taking, should go better than last years eighth, which was about equally amazing and as cr@p, depending on how you looked at it.

With a manager who does want to be here next season one can hope that the team won't be allowed (or was that encouraged?) to stop bothering after Christmas.

With a world-class academy, a superb training set up, great fans .... reasons to be cheerful, 1, 2, 3, and more ...

With, of course, the rider that they have to actually come through.

And I'm expecting them to in spades; this Taider guy, Goalie & central defender from Celtic when they get knocked out of the Champion's League on Wednesday, and another surprise or two this week.

Let's get happy! The new season is coming!

Heroes is an interesting word; I know it's something of a crass comparison, but I couldn't help thinking when I was watching a documentary about the Tommies in the WW1 trenches, what if one of them had thought "The Germans advance in such nice straight lines; my head's with them now". Or, "wow, those Germans have so much nicer uniforms; I wish I was over there".

Words like 'legend', 'hero' etc. get thrown around quite easily, should we really apply them to footballers? Can a mercenary ever truly be a hero? Because, let's face it, that's what footballers are. The ones that leave us for greener pastures, and the ones who come here for a bigger paycheck.

Perhaps it wouldn't be a bad thing if we could take some of the hyperbole out of football.

Fair point. In the footballing sense they were our heroes on delivering stylish entertainment that made me feel proud to be a Saints fan. I've rarely not.been proud of that....been in my blood since about 1967 when I was 9. But I certainly didn't intend to elevate them to a status they don't deserve. Yea, he's a good talker is Ralph Kreuger. He says all the right things and makes it all sound like a walk in the park.
I have been critical of the guy but maybe I have been hasty - we have had a bit of a summer but the transfer window has a few weeks to run yet.
Ron Koeman knows what he is doing, that much is certain, and he is our biggest signing this summer, defo.
This makes me optimistic - if we were stagnating we wouldn't have offered him the job and he wouldn't have come here.
We all know where the squad needs strengthening, (we're all experts aren't we?) So will the board know.

One thing's for sure - we look in better shape right now than Liverpool do! :-D

Although the media like to portray some sports people as heroes, lets not forget that nothing could be further from the truth. A hero to me who someone who helps other people, sometimes at great personal cost. You hardly see that from a sports person. Football players are just doing their job, and are well paid for what they do.

I didnt mean for that to sound cynical, but lets look at this. At this stage, who have we got covering Clyne, or Bertrand? We only have Yoshida, Hooiveld and Fonte for centre defense. By the looks of things the centre midfield is pretty good, but back up of good midfield wingers look fairly thin also. Our attack up front is not proven in the EPL yet. Even if we get the players needed tomorrow, we still have to go through a phase of gelling as a team. Hey I am optimistic that it can be done, but given the team structure at this moment, theres room for doubt.

Sorry but I don't think that your line up looks as strong as last season yet.
A new first choice Gk - Forster ?
A top RB for competition for Cline now we have sold Chambers
TWO top CB's to replace Fonte & Lovren
A top STRIKER or two who are better than Pelle & J-Rod because we must score at least 20 more goals than we did last season.

That is 5 or 6 first choice players we still need to sign assuming Morgan does stay. RonKo then has to get them all to plays as a team.

However it does sound as though the board are working on these positions, so if we get them all Ralph will be right in what he says.

Pleased with Ralph's statement probably needed to be said before his holiday, but it has lifted my moral considerably.

I stuck the comment below on the other blog last night as I'm very interested in the fans view .............. Am I the only one who thinks that BSKYB are going to try and undermine the EPL over the next 10 yrs. They want to burst the financial bubble that currently exist's which will have a massive effect on all EPL clubs especially the mid size badly run ones ....................

'' Next season once again Saints will be part of a major discussion on English Football ..............

How is that Saints could sell at such high prices for Good quality players and yet buy equal or if not better and at far lower cost ?

It will expose the laziness/arrogance of the 'BIG' clubs and their scouting and also how a majority of these good players became 'ENGLISH' bench warmers to the cost of our National Side !

The solidity of Saints financially will be discussed but why now is this important ?

Because this month we will see BSKYB first step in breaking the financial cartel of the EPL with the introduction of their Channel 5 ....... They will use channel 5 to start to promote better and more balanced financial share of TV money across Europe therefore giving SKY more content for the same cost.

At that point clubs with a sound financial footing like Saints and 'Ares' nal will be a stronger position as the TV revenue either does not increase or even reduces !

I for one still want a football club in 10 years, NC did a brilliant job at spending someone else's money and no-one else could have delivered on the '5 year plan' but it was unsustainable without continual owner hand out's ...............

Hence the collapse in the relationship over the last 18 months. Without Saint Markus we would not have a club , without Katharina 's support we would not have continued the initial success bearing in mind the season we were promoted from League 1 , 98% of ALL revenue went on wages alone !

Next season will be something new but no less exciting for it, but one things for sure we now have a club that cares about it's HISTORY, it's FANS and it's SPONSORS ............. For me that counts and I've got a strong feeling under RonKom as suggested above we are going to shock an awful lot of pundits .................

If that does happen I wonder how many posters will be changing their 'LOG IN' name , a lot me thinks. Be assured if I'm wrong I'll still be here under this log in and supporting our Team from the front row of the Northam stand just by the corner flag just the same .............. ''

To say we will be stronger and have a better squad than last season is one hell of a statement and I hope he proves me wrong because it won't be.
Again, if J Rod and Morgan are still with us by the end of the season then I will be encouraged and yes, impressed by Kruger.

Yes a pretty positive statement but I don't like the getout about some of the cash pile could be used for player wages. That should be catered for out of the club's normal income. IE SKY money, gate receipts etc. We are currently sat on a huge pile of transfer money and under normal circumstancs there would be a transfer kitty anyway, so maybe £20-£25million more. And it would be nice to hear an update on Jack Cork's situaion. We've heard very little on that. He may be holding back to see how things pan out, but he's a very good and important player and throwing a bit more cash his way would be a good investment. After all to buy a player of his quality would cost a good few millions.

Yes but if you understand the FFP, then you will know that is not allowed to happen. Some will need to be spent on wages.

So still being quite bullish so a lot of pressure on for this season.

If Saints are to be self financing then we DO have to use some of the profit on wages, the very fact that we can get other clubs/vultures to buy at an inflated rate means eventually some will have to stop buying whilst we continue to improve at THEIR expense, rather than them profiting from our hard work. imo

The key word is PLAN in this statement! Having sold 5 key players and spine of the team is criminal. And shows the ambition of this new board, Saints if they had kept those 5 key players were heading in the right direction, just probably 3-4 quality additions to add strength in depth along with the next batch of young talent would have been in a very good sustainable position. Saints very rarely sold out there home games last season, giving the great football they were playing and there excellent league position this was not good, every game should have been sold out last season for sure. I don't believe Saints will better last season as it's crystal clear this current board has no vision, no long term or short term plan, and no ambition. I have supported Saints a very long time and never in the history of this great club have I ever seen so many top players leave in one swoop. I would happily take 4th from bottom all day long and I feel Ronald Koeman who is a good manager, why oh why he has come to Saints I will never know, deserves much better. But will probably be gone next season too! Please let Schneiderlin go as Saints don't deserve this top player, and waste his talent here at this very small club, it's wrong to keep a player having sold all the others.

That money will be used for players ie transfers and wages. He's reiterated that, you've got to give him the chance to make good on that promise, surely? Criticising now is well, like Pelle saying he'll score us goals and now criticising him coz he hasn't delivered - a bit premature isn't it? The Celtic players we're after depends on their club's Champions League efforts - an example of where deals for good players (marquee signings) take time because other factors are involved!
I prefer to give them the chance befor I moan!
Doesn't mean I'm a happy clapper that will just accept whatever happens!
As for knowing, (I think the word you were looking for is) nothing about football: stupid comment! I know enough about life (football being a part of it!), that we can't just click our fingers and get what we want! We have to work for it! The better the thing/s (player/s) we want the harder we have to work and the more obstacles you have to negotiate!

No we don't!!

Is he better than Pelle?? NO.

He'll just end up being an expensive bench warmer for us!

He'll be wanting over 60k in wages each week, and that money would be better used on 2 or 3 squad players.

Did you see him in the world cup?? Awful. And he wasn't even Mexico's first choice striker, which says it all!!

Based on what has been said already by the board in pre-season- Talk is cheap'. Anyone can talk a good game. He has got 2 weeks to make it happen.

Players like Taider- were we even interested in him? Or just taking on Inters rejects as a sweetner to keep the fans happy??

So Ralph gives an unambiguous , very clear statement of intent and still the doomsayers whinge and snipe.
How many have actually seen the new signings Tadic and Pelle play? Tadic is, from what I have seen a more than adequate replacement for Liarlana, he has more pace, plenty of skill and in the Brighton game played Clyne in behind the defence time after time , great eye for a pass and awareness of team mates movement. Weaker?? Definitely not.

Pelle - First impressions are good , definitely more mobile than SRL and has more pace, makes intelligent runs into the box and gets plenty of attempts on goal. Comes with a great scoring record in the Eredivise but admittedly has to prove himself in the Prem - BUT THEN SO DID SRL!!!
First impressions suggest he will make the grade and will be different from SRL but that does not mean weaker!

Yes we need at least one CB for sure Vlaar, Van Dijk or someone not yet on the media radar.

Ryan Bertrand - bought in on loan because we have Matt Targett - potentially better than Shaw but clearly Koeman does not want to have to rely on him for the whole season so has bought in a player with Prem experience and International experience at a number of levels including Team GB at the Olympics.

GK - It seems increasingly likely that Fraser Forster will be coming in, cant think of anyone better who is likely to be available.

To be stronger than last season will require another 2 or 3 players however that is not major surgery.

The biggest factor in being stronger is the fact that we will have a manager and KEY players (Captain, CB and Left back) who are not spending most of the season dreaming of playing for another team!!

I am definitely not a happy clapper but for Chrissakes lets have some common sense and SUPPORT for our team, there are positives so why ignore them and concentrate on the crap that's happened.

u bunch of mugs, did you think of that while in a hall of mirrors?
But I digress. Back to the point, why do you have to have a knee jerk reaction to everything? Sometimes it's wise to stop, think and maybe even take a step back and look at the bigger picture.
Does your opinion, which you absolutely have a right to and I respect that, always have to be the right one?
My posts are about my opinion, and where appropriate I explain how/why I've come to them. But, unlike you (there you go: I could be wrong) I know my opinion could be wrong!
I know the clock is ticking, but we lost a manager, and that had to be addressed first obviously. Then there was an unprecedented number of first team players who turned mercenary so we got shot of 'em. And made a killing financially! There was also the small matter of a World Cup going on which, again obviously, added to the delays as players, clubs and agents were concentrating on that first!
All I've suggested is that now is not the time for definitive judgement!

I think you are supporting the wrong team mate, that is skate talk, jog on down the M27, they would love you and your thuggish attitude, it fits perfectly. Alternative is Millwall they share your views too. Atmosphere doesn't mean the mongol hoards bellowing and snarling, baying for blood, atmosphere should mean decent fans appreciating good football, not a neanderthal thug fest.

Saints eye €25m deal for duo

August 6, 2014

Southampton are reportedly looking to seal a €25m double deal for Sporting Lisbon defender Marcos Rojo and Dynamo Kyiv midfielder Younes Belhanda.

The former, an Argentina international who appeared in the 2014 World Cup final, looks set to leave the Portuguese outfit, but Saints have failed with their first offer of €12m, with €15m being demanded.

Meanwhile the Frenchman, who only joined Dynamo from Montpellier last summer, is also keen on a move to the Premier League, following the political unrest in the country of his parent club at the current time.

It is thought that an offer of €10m would be enough to bring the 24-year-old attacking midfielder to St Mary’s, and his representative has confirmed there has been firm interest enquiries from the south coast side.

According to an article in "News Now", a supporter of Inter says that Tardic possibly has potential but he could not command a regular place in the Inter set-up, and that he was lazy off the ball. He thought that he would have some difficulty in getting up to pace in the EPL, and would probably be employed best as a bench sub. When asked about the other player who is rumoured to be a part of the Osvaldo swap, he said that it was one of the worst transfer deals that Inter had ever made, and as an out and out winger he did not fit into the Inter style of play. There is also an article that Porto have rejected Saints latest bid for Rojo and that it was not only the amount of the bid but the way that it was proposed to be payed. Looks like Saints are trying to get something for nothing, or that is what Porto seems to think.

Congratulations on being the first to spell his name wrong, anyone know how to get an i with two dots over it on a qwerty keyboard? Les apparently is slumming it in Portugal so not involved with this one.
