HOOK footballer Olly Lancashire has been named as captain of League One outfit Rochdale.

The 25-year-old wore the armband several times last season in the absence of regular skipper Peter Cavanagh. He has now left the club and manager Keith Hill sees central defender Lancashire as a natural replacement.

“The players really relate to Oliver an they’ve got a lot of respect for him as a player and as a leader,” Hill said. “I think it was a natural transition for him. He will be respected and appreciated, as he already is, by all the players in the squad.”

Former Robert May’s School pupil Lancashire began his career at Southampton before representing Walsall and Aldershot. He joined Rochdale last summer, helping the Spotland club to win promotion by finishing third in League Two.

Reacting to the announcement on Twitter, Lancashire said: “Very happy to have been given the armband. Can’t wait for Saturday and to be part of another successful season.”
