Was one of our standout players last season. It makes good sense in terms of the fee and we only want players who are committed to the club but what the flip is driving all these players away, surely we have ambition and surely we have a bit of money to pay wages etc so what is it that is driving them away. I hope Big Ron is allowed to splash the cash and 2 good centre backs please...Fonte is a better player alongside a class CB but I wouldn't fancy him and Hoover lining up at anfield in 3 weeks. Come on Les bring in Vlaar and Van Dijk....
I'll tell you what's driving (I would actually use the word luring) players away - astronomical wages which we will not (cannot?) pay and the lure of Champions League Football. OK so Man U are not in the CL this coming season, but does anyone really think they won't be there again in a few seasons, if not the one after next?
I for one do not want to see us paying wages that we cannot sustain and, god forbid, end up like that lot at the dodgy end of the M27.
Like it or not, we cannot compete with Utd, City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal - at least not until we have a stadium with a capacity of at least 45000 and are regularly selling out home matches at that level.
I have been supporting Saints for over 40 years and I'd love to see us up there with the big boys but I'm afraid money dictates and whilst we may have taken a lot in transfer fees in the last month, it ain't nothing compared to what the top clubs are able to spend on transfer fees and wages.
Whatever happens I will always support THE SAINTS

Liverpool have agreed a fee believed to be in the region of £20m for Saints defender Dejan Lovren.

The Croatian centre half has long been angling for a move to Anfield, after the Premier League runner-ups' interest in him was revealed.

At one point, he even threatened to not return to Staplewood following the World Cup in a bid to force through the move to Liverpool.

Manger Ronald Koeman said last week that he was prepared to let Lovren go if the Reds met Saints' asking price, as he did not want players at Southampton who did not want to be there.

He will be the third Southampton player to swap the South Coast for the North West this summer, following in the footsteps of Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana.

In total, Liverpool have paid Saints around £49m for the three players, which is half of the total outlay Brendan Rodgers has put on seven new signings.

Lovren joined Saints from French side Lyon for a fee of £8.5m last summer.

It is understood he will undergo a medical tomorrow before finalising the move.
