Goalkeeper Artur Boruc and playmaker Gaston Ramirez in line for game time against Cherries

First published in Sport

Goalkeeper Artur Boruc and playmaker Gaston Ramirez could both make their first appearances of pre-season, as Saints head to Bournemouth tonight.

Ronald Koeman is taking his squad to the Goldsands Stadium for what will be their fourth match of the summer, and their sternest test so far.

Boruc is yet to feature in any of the pre-season friendly games, but Koeman intends to play him this evening.

The 34-year-old will hope to make a point, with his role as the team’s first-choice keeper under significant threat ahead of the start of the Premier League campaign.

Saints want to sign a new keeper this summer, and have made Celtic’s Fraser Forster their number-one target. They are set to return with a second bid for the 6ft 7in stopper after their initial offer for the 26-year-old England international was rejected.

As well as Boruc, Ramirez could also be back in the line-up, having returned to duty at the club this week, following his involvement in the World Cup with Uruguay.

Steven Davis was rested in Monday’s 1-0 win at Swindon Town as a precaution, because of injury, and he will be assessed before this evening’s fixture.

Graziano Pelle, who signed from Feyenoord this summer, should get another run out, while fellow new arrival Dusan Tadic is also likely to feature.

Morgan Schneiderlin, who made it to the World Cup quarter-finals with France, will not be involved, as he is not due back at the club until this weekend.

Next Thursday’s trip to Brighton will be the first possible involvement for the midfielder.

Saints have just two friendly fixtures left on their schedule after this evening. The first is the clash with the Seagulls, ahead of a home game against Bayer Leverkusen on August 9.

Koeman, who changed his entire team at half-time in the first two games of the summer, gave the bulk of his starting line-up at Swindon an hour before replacing them.

He is keen for his side to be given an even stronger challenge tonight, and will be looking for an increase in intensity.

Saints have signed 15-year-old goalkeeper Neal Osborn from Torquay United. The youngster has been plucked from the Gulls’ academy and moves to St Mary’s. Torquay described the fee paid by Saints as “significant” and said the deal represented a five-figure sum to them, with possible add-ons in the future.

Good to have Gaston & Artur back, we need all the senior players we can get. RonKo can start to see what role Gaston will play as I expect that he will get the best from him.

Now looking unlikely we will get all SIX quality players we need before the season starts and possibly may have to wait until January to get them all. The important thing is not to waste the money on mediocre players, the new ones MUST be BETTER than the ones we have and those who have already left.

Lets all be patient and not pressure RonKo and his team whilst they rebuild it this season, ready to push on next year. It is not their fault so many key players are leaving/left.

Time for our young player to seize the opportunity and make the step up.

Hopefully Ron can get the best out of Gaston like Bally did with Tiss. It's been two years since he arrived and he still hasn't claimed a starting place outright. To be fair to Nigel I can see why he bought him. Gaston should have been a perfect fit for the way Nige had us play. The possession game with the slow build up play suited a player like Gaston, which is probably why he was plying his trade in Italy before he came to us. But he was never going to flourish in Poch's quick tempo pressing game. I'm not sure he is the type of player suited to the quick tempo, hustle and bustle of the Premiership, he's better suited to Serie A.

We still need to get another keeper, it would be good to have somebody pushing Art and as we know that person is Gazza!!!

I have a feeling you may just be right about Gaston. Hopefully he can stay injury free this season and he can show us what he's clearly capable of. I think he could be a natural replacement for Liarllana but has showed he can be effective on the right and is capable of cutting in too. His crossing is not of the highest standard and needs to be worked on but there is no doubting his class when he runs with the ball.
Borat is a great character and is up there with the best of them as a shot stopper and he polices his box with authority but his distribution is bloody awful, if only he were ten years younger we wouldn't need to be looking for another keeper. Maybe Gazza will make the grade in the years to come but he just isn't up to the required standard yet.

I agree, and nice to see Artur back. Have a big soft spot for him - unless, that it is he tries to dribble round defenders or forgets how windy it can be!

Also, it was always obvious that we were not getting the best from Gaston, despite individual flashes of brilliance. Presumably, Saints will play a different game under RK though we loved Poch's pressing and quick tempo game. This will be interesting and we will see just how much Gaston has to contribute to the new way.

I am sure many of us feel Gaston has much more to offer than we have seen. I DO hope so. COYR&WS!

In fact, Artur played the second half in Hasselt.

Morgan is due back this weekend, so won't play today. I'd like to be a fly on the wall when he meets Ron. Go on Ron, present him with a tasty new contract and the captain's armband.

I agree. I worry about Gazza's confidence as he's had a tough couple of seasons when he has appeared. He's got some good attributes, but it wouldn't do him any harm to cut his teeth on a weekly basis in a lower division. Build up that confidence and then have another look at him in a season or two.

I think your evaluation of Gaston is spot on. I still haven't seen him impose himself on a game, which is a shame because he is talented. I see him as a Serie A player, either way he has to deliver this season.

Are you sure it wasn't a cardboard cut out of Artur at Hasselt? I don't remember him having to do a lot! Poor reporting from the DE.

Come on Gaston/Artur - as one door closes another one opens and we have vacancies open for the position of star player at our club - both of you are more than capable of stepping up and becoming two of the most important players in the team.

For too long internationally and at club level Gaston has been able to hide as a fringe player. You never know, this might help him. Sometimes players can lack that important arrogance if they don't feel they are the main man - note the Lambert/Osvaldo situation. Lambert definitely didn't like no longer being the big man and his performances suffered until Os left and he knew he had a regular starting spot.

Come on Gaston - this is your time to shine.

NC - Maybe we should all stop with the transfer in stuff. It seems (and we only know what we're told) Rambo is dead set on another keeper and a CB - I doubt too many of us would argue with him over that.

He may not see that we even need to buy in for the three already gone. (another striker would have come in even if SRL has stayed.)
There are several new faces in contention from the reserves/junior sides and I suspect we already have a couple in contention to replace Liarllana as Kadic can play down the left as well as in the centre, Gaston down the right and can also fill the Liarllana role. In MF we are very strong even if you leave out Spyder (who knows what will happen with him though I think it's safer to just count him as already gone and consider what we do know we're going to have - if he stays it looks like a new player in that way) JWP just keeps getting better and is no longer just a willing galloper but last season showed he knows exactly where to put the ball too. Corky and Davis (Both vastly underrated by the fans) Wannayamoney now has prem experience under his belt and should be even better this season than last. Isted can step in on the left, JRod can also fill that spot on the left if needed to. All in all our MF is in great shape even before we take into account the 2/3 youngsters Rambo is currently blooding. Then if Spyderman does stay.........
Up front we have Pelle (an unknown quantity just yet but has the attributes to make it in the PL), Mayuka (jury out still) Sharpe (who might still make the grade or at least be a useful sub) and JRod later in the season, and big Sam who can only be better as a result of his experiences last season. I think we are short of one Marian Pahars type of forward as opposed to an out and out striker although the latter would be welcomed also. This is a consolidation season after being let down so badly by those who should not be mentioned in polite society.
It may be that Rambo does not see the need to just keep splashing the cash. 3 years under his command should shake us back on track for top half finishes every season and an occasional cup final or two.
Can't wait for the season to start but it's still a way away and there is plenty of time for the Rambo bros to bring whoever they think they need and it might not be quite what we like to think we need. No point spending money for the sake of it. I personally would keep a large slice avail for January in case we need some first aid at that point - Rambo may see it differently.

According to media sources Arsenal have used "intermediary" agents to offer Morgan contract terms before agreeing a fee. I think that Wenger needs to be asked about this as if this is the case it is clearly against FA and FIFA rules and is likely to SERIOUSLY affect him.

still believe gaston can be a great player for us. we just haven't seen enough of him, hes had some bad injuries and I still wince at that tackle by brown at blunderland, he was also behind lielanna in the pecking order, no manager was going to drop lielanna or gaston, the fan reaction would have been terrible. gaston still hasn't had a proper run of games in his, or any, position but he did start to play well when he had a few games in a row. hopefully he can show us what he can do and make the place his own. I wonder if Ronnie wants to play mayuka as well, we just haven't seen anything of him, I know stras and our French contingent say he hasn't set the world alight in the French league so maybe he was just a poor signing? someone mentioned adkins buying gaston, I thought it was NC who pushed for that move, im not sure how much say adkins had in transfers, though I think gazza was one of his so who knows, we might have to wait for the adkins diet autobiography to find out!

I am trying to be patient, but I am hanging out to update the team on Fifa14! lol

Worst post of the year.
"Maybe we should all stop with the transfer stuff" what? We lose 3first teamers, possibly more and so we play 3/4 or 5 kids.thats a joke right?
Sharpe a useful sub? You really want us relegated don't you.

Poole Tom says...

Looking forward to tonight`s game because it will be a chance to see our new style of football, two new signings and hopefully some of the youngsters. Not too worried about the result although because I live in Poole I am bound to get some flack if we lose! Looking ahead to the new season proper, it would obviously be great to see Gaston, Sharp and Mayuka step up to the plate and prove they are good enough for the Premier League, but realistically that`s unlikely to happen. The new boys are unproven in England as well so personally I would still like to see us splash some of our new found wealth on proven Premier League quality.

3 out 3 in
Liarllana Kadic
SRL Pelle
Shaw Targett

2 purchased and one from the academy - Doesn't matter whether you or I think Targett is or is not the man to replace Shaw - Rambo does and that's all that counts.
There may yet be a couple more out and there may yet be a couple more in. I doubt your crystal ball works any better than mine.
Whether I consider Billy Sharpe to be up to scratch or not doesn't matter it's whether he can convince the Koeman bros he's the man for the job or not is all that matters.
Perhaps you'd care to point to any evidence in any post made which might even lead you to suspect I might want, "Us" relegated.
If the managers think they have players ready to make the jump who am I to question it - they see them on a daily basis I've never even heard of most of them therefore I feel unqualified to judge on that - best leave it to the experts eh!?
Maybe you're one of those experts and I'm doing you a disservice?
More likely you know no more than me about the whole process though. That's the reality isn't it knackers - you know nothing do you? Still plenty of scope for coming on to a forum and making a smoke screen for your own inadequacies by putting the spot light on someone else's risshole.
Too many pathetic little tossers who think that's a recipe that will see them through life. Best stop it now mate it's not a good habit to get into and just shows you to be........... well, inadequate really. Now this really is the worst post of the year simply because it should be so unnecessary and I should not be drawn toward rectifying your cognitive disturbances, can't help myself though. I smell a turd and I want to clean it up, I see a cockroach and I want to kill it, I detect a knacker and I want to ........ not sure really but I do know aforementioned knacker should not be left in public view.
Anything else you want to attempt to find fault with before I dismiss you to your insignificant position elsewhere in the ether?

It will be good to see Boruc and Ramirez back. I look forward to seeing Ramirez, Tadic and Pelle combining well in the attacking play.
I believe the transfers definately need some attention to our back four now. I hope that quality is at the forefront of our future decisions to cement our intentions of providing an adequate threat to the likes if Liverpool and Man City.
