Luke Shaw: I won't buckle under huge pressure at Old Trafford

Luke Shaw

Luke Shaw

First published in Sport

New Manchester United defender Luke Shaw insists he will not buckle under the pressure of playing for a club that he believes is the biggest in the world.

Shaw became the most expensive teenager in history when he moved to United from Saints for an initial fee of £27million last month.

Just three weeks after Shaw's arrival, United sold Patrice Evra, the France international who had been the club's first-choice left-back for eight years.

To succeed Evra, who was also a big influence in the dressing room, seems a tall order for a player who has only just turned 19, but Shaw does not seem fazed at all.

"I don't feel any pressure to come in for Evra," Shaw said on the eve of United's first pre-season game against the Los Angeles Galaxy.

"He has been great for the club for the last 10 years and I hope I can carry that on.

"I will just try to focus on my own game, what I do on the pitch.

"I'm looking forward to trying to impress the new gaffer."

Shaw's arrival at United had been something of a surprise given that he had supported Chelsea, who were also interested in his signature, since he was young.

Most of Shaw's family are Blues fans too, but the left-back, who only made his full Premier League debut in November 2012, is convinced he made the right decision.

"Manchester United is the biggest club and it will push me to do my best," said the defender, who was part of England's World Cup squad this summer.

"I signed a contract here because I know what the club is capable of. And I know I will improve at the club."

I'm only interested in this player to the extent that I'm pleased that the enormous amount we sold him for will pay for the rebuilding of our whole team, despite the fact that he's just a promising youngster who hasn't actually achieved a great deal on the pitch yet.

Anybody else see the reports that Juventus paid ManUre only a couple of million for Evra? Incredibly cheap price. Would he have come here to add experience to a young side? I wonder what his wages are though.

Another dose of the DE trying to wind up Saints fans.
No longer have any interest in the kid. Good luck to him, sure the huge paypacket and the support of the plastic-fantastics will make him happy.
To me he's another deserter, who either always knew we were just a stepping stone, or has hd his head turned by agents. Either way, soiled his reputation for me.
DE, how about articles on Matty Targett, who looks the real deal? Or about our other youngsters coming through? Or about signings?
Or would that just be too positive? I swear the journos on here are of the skunt persuasion...

Lazy cut 'n' paste journalism instead of constructing a current piece on the players we have at Saints and what their goals and ambitions are. There are some potentially really interesting articles that could be written at this point in time.
If the Echo choose not to write them it is down to three things...
1. They can't be bothered
2. They have no-one attuned to what their sports readers really want to read.
3. They have no real access to the football club for any real insight or original content.

(Anyone else think it's all three of the above?)

As long as we get the multi millions fee for him in the bank i really dont care if he fits in there or not. He was a good player for us but I must say I thought the fee was astronomic for such a young whppersnapper, and Im also mindful of the errors he makes - either way my point is that he's gone so lets move on.

Biggest club in the world?
With Real Madrid signing the likes of Ronaldo, Bale, Kroos and Rodriquez (70 Million) i think he is a bit deluded!
Barca, Bayern, PSG, City, Chelsea and Arsenal all have far stronger squads with world class players. The only player who could possibly be in the world class bracket at united is RVP and thats only if he is not injured or in a mood.
