A post-match video interview with Basingstoke Town manager Jason Bristow can be seen by clicking here.
Not to long ago, this was a Conference South fixture. Newport are now two leagues above Town, but you couldn't tell tonight.
Newport manager Justin Edinburgh was furious with his players after the match, giving them a dressing down on the pitch, but it was a good display from Town.
Reaction to follow.
Basingstoke Town 1-1 Newport County
90+2 - Inches away from the resulting corner as well. Newport defend the ball in poorly and while Argent fails to make proper contact with his header, it pops up onto the angle of post and crossbar.
90+1 - So close to a Town winner. Argent's flick catches the Newport defence napping and Owusu is in behind. He really gets hold of his angled drive, forcing a good save out of Pidgeley.
90 - Macklin's low centre is just about cleared by the Newport defence.
89 - A cross from the Newport left is deflected into the arms of Moore by a home defender.
87 - Bird has a shot, but it hits the wall at chest height.
86 - Macklin makes a good run and is hacked down. Maybe a chance to get a shot in from the free-kick. It's 25 yards out in a central position.
85 - Newport County - Byron Anthony on for Ismail Yakubu
83 - Basingstoke Town - Marcus Johnson-Schuster on for Robbie Rice
81 - Good play from Macklin and Argent to create a shooting chance for Bird. It needed to be the perfect strike, but the left-back drags his angled drive wide of the far post.
76 - Jenkinson passes the ball straight to a Newport player and Town are on the back foot. They recover well, but will have been relieved to see the offside flag go up.
74 - A quickly-taken free-kick gives Bird the chance to cross. It's a decent ball, but there's nobody attacking the far post.
72 - Newport County - Kyle Patten and Lee Minshull on for Adam Chapman and Jan Klukowski.
70 - Good work from Macklin down the right, but his cross is just behind Argent.
68 - A dangerous ball comes into the Town box, but Gasson and Bird just about deal with it.
67 - Basingstoke Town - Sam Argent, Lloyd Macklin, Julian Owusu and Kieran Maylen on for Liam Enver-Marum, Manny Williams, Chris Flood and Nathan Smart.
66 - Flood outpaces Ismail Yakubu down the right, but his low ball across goal is well claimed by Pidgeley.
65 - Newport County - Chris Zebroski and Andy Sandell on for Aaron O'Connor and Andrew Hughes
63 - That's a really incisive move from Town, but Bird is challenged as he looks to cut inside. Some really good passing in there.
61 - Willmott's cross from the Newport right finds O'Connor in space. That's a free-header, but it's a terrible effort. He barely got anything on it.
60 - Pidgeley flaps at and misses that corner from Shaun McAuley as Flood makes a good run unchecked. Lucky to see it go out for a goal-kick.
58 - Basingstoke Town - Andrew Jenkinson on for Ryan Scott
58 - Hughes beats Smart down the Newport right, but his cross is over everybody in the middle.
55 - Town should be ahead. Looked like Enver-Marum had fouled a Newport defender but the referee waved play on and the striker beat first a defender and then Pidgeley.
Looked like he had a tap-in, but the finish was casual and Robbie Willmott got across from right-back to make an excellent block.
53 - Flood forces Pidgeley to kick the ball out for a throw deep in the Newport half, but Town cannot make anything of the opportunity.
52 - That's a dangerous ball across the Town penalty area from a free-kick, but there's no Newport player there to take advantage.
50 - Klukowski shoots from a narrow angle. The ball somehow evades Moore before coming off the post and hitting the goalkeeper on the head, but he's able to gather.
49 - Another chance for O'Connor, but he cannot redirect the ball on target from around the penalty spot.
48 - Scott is robbed in a bad area. The ball drops for Gasson, but the hosts are on the back foot.
At first glance, it seems that the visitors are unchanged as well. Glad I didn't put any money on lots of changes.
Newport get the second half started.
Looks like Town are unchanged. Newport haven't made too many alterations either.
The teams are starting to wander back out. Let's see if I can work out any changes.
With any luck, the sun will go down behind the houses on the far side before the second half starts. It's been a nightmare so far.
The signing of Macklin and Argent is interesting. Macklin looks like he could be a decent player if he gets his head right, while I'm glad Jason Bristow has taken a punt on local boy Argent.
Having said that, Flood took his goal well and has had a decent 45 minutes leading the line alongside Enver-Marum.
It's hot out there, so I suspect we'll see a few changes from both sides at the break.
Another good 45 minutes from Town. Newport had the better of the play but the hosts were far from outclassed.
Basingstoke Town 1-1 Newport County
44 - Dangerous ball in from the Newport right, but Rice heads away under pressure. Another shot is deflected into the side-netting for a corner, but Town manage to clear.
42 - Bird plays Enver-Marum in, but the forward wasn't able to time his run correctly and is caught offside.
40 - Andrew Hughes breaks forward from left-back, but that's a tame shot, wide of the near post.
39 - Good tackle by Simon Dunn to end a promising Newport move. Town go up the other end, but that cross is too close to Pidgeley in the visitors' goal.
38 - Newport are keeping the ball well, but there's no end product, that move ending with a hopeful ball forward. Flood is dropping back to cover the right-back, giving Town a 4-5-1 shape without the ball.
31 - Almost an immediate second for Newport, but Jan Klukowski's attempt to touch in a low cross is straight at Moore in the Town goal.
30 - Basingstoke Town 1-1 Newport County - Aaron O'Connor
Newport get in down the right and Town never recover. A cross just clears AARON O'CONNOR but drops to Rene Howe and his weak shot is touched home from close range by O'Connor.
There are three changes to the Town side that started against Hungerford on Thursday. Jay Gasson is back from injury and in for Kieran Maylen, ex-Aldershot man and triallist Ryan Scott has replaced Andrew Jenkinson in front of the back four and Flood is in for Julian Owusu in attack.
23 - Thats an important header from Smart at the far post, stopping Aaron O'Connor getting onto that cross.
22 - Jeffers lets fly from distance, but it's well over the Town goal.
17 - Newport have been on top since the goal went in, but good play from Enver-Marum sets up a Town attack and Bird's cross from the left finds the head of Flood, whose header is not far over.
15 - Shaun Jeffers gets up to meet the resulting corner, and that's not far over the bar.
15 - That's an important challenge from Williams, but it could have been a penalty. He got the ball, but caught the player in a scissor action afterwards.
13 - Moore has to be off his line quickly to get to a long ball forward.
12 - Mark Byrne has a shot from distance, but it's over the Town crossbar.
10 - Basingstoke Town 1-0 Newport County - Chris Flood
Newport deal with the corner but fail to clear their lines fully. Jay Gasson plays a lovely pass and CHRIS FLOOD is in the clear. He cuts back on his right foot before curling a fine finish past Lenny Pidgeley.
9 - Nathan Smart beats one man down the right, and while his low centre is cut out, that's the first corner of the match.
8 - Tom Bird totally miss-hits an attempted clearance and is relieved to see the ball drop into the arms of goalkeeper Stuart Moore.
5 - Been a quiet start to the game. The sides are trying to work each other out at the moment.
Looks like a midfield diamond for Town, with Chris Flood alongside Enver-Marum in attack.
1 - The first chance falls to the hosts. Manny Williams floats a free-kick in from the right and Liam Enver-Marum is on the end of it, but his flicked header is straight at Lenny Pidgeley in the Newport goal.
Town get us under way. They are shooting towards the Town End in the first half.

It's a warm, sunny evening in Basingstoke, which probably means that I won't be able to see much from the press box during the first half. The sun shines straight in as it goes down.
Will be quite warm out there for the players as well, and with less players in the squad, it will be a real test of fitness.
Hoping to have some team news for you in the next few minutes. It's pretty much a full-strength Newport squad though.
In case you missed it, and I'm not quite sure how you could have, the Camrose has been renamed as part of a deal with Sky Sports show Soccer AM.
Tonight is the first game at the Soccer AM Stadium. Hopefully the interest around the deal will result in a few more through the gate tonight.
Basingstoke Town have added two more players to their squad ahead of tonight's game. Strikers Lloyd Macklin and Sam Argent have both signed on non-contract terms.
A quick update to start with. Tonight's game was due to kick-off at 7.30pm, but the start-time has now been pushed back by 15 minutes to 7.45pm.
Newport aren't here yet, so I assume they have got caught in traffic, hence the delayed start.
Good evening and welcome to live text commentary from the Soccer AM Stadium, where Basingstoke Town are hosting League Two side Newport County in a pre-season friendly.
