Saints' perfect start to pre-season continues at Swindon

Saints made it three wins from three in pre-season, as Jos Hooiveld's goal earned them a 1-0 victory at Swindon.

After triumphing against minnows EHC Hoensbroek and Sporting Hasselt on their summer tour, Ronald Koeman's side stepped up their preparations with a trip to the League One outfit.

The game was controlled by Saints throughout, but there was just the one goal, coming early in the second half from Hooiveld.

There was no place for Liverpool target Dejan Lovren, who was out with a slight knock, while Steven Davis was also missing through injury.

Saints started well and nearly led through new signing Graziano Pelle in the fourth minute.

Matt Targett slid a ball down the left wing for Lloyd Isgrove to chase, with his low ball picking out the Italian striker, only for his first-time strike to be blocked.

Nathaniel Clyne should have opened the scoring in the 12th minute, pouncing on a loose ball down the inside-right channel and driving into the area, but his powerful low strike was beaten away by Wes Foderingham.

Isgrove then had a sight of goal after 16 minutes, but curled a right-foot effort wide of the far post from just inside the area.

Swindon’s only real moment of any threat came in the 33rd minute, with Andy Williams spinning past Hooiveld in the area and flashing a low ball across the face, but Jose Fonte was on hand to clear.

Sam McQueen, arguably the star of Saints’ pre-season trip to the Netherlands and Belgium last week, picked up an injury towards the end of the half and was replaced by Emmanuel Mayuka at the break.

Paulo Gazzaniga was also introduced, with Kelvin Davis being withdrawn.

Saints finally grabbed the lead in the 51st minute, as James Ward-Prowse’s corner drifted to the far post and was poked home by Hooiveld.

Ward-Prowse went close to doubling the lead moments later, but his glancing header from Mayuka’s right-wing cross went over.

Saints made their final nine substitutions all in the 62nd minute, with every remaining starter being withdrawn.

The team saw out the game without much trouble, and they will head to Bournemouth on Friday for their next test.

Quote from Seed on the Osvaldo thread :- Ospers most of us admire your constant positivity but in the real world we have to analyse what is in front of us. Each and every one of these events have 'circumstances' that individually could explain or justify them, but the collective is looking extremely bad!

The day after you mentioned the "collective" we are linked to a young full back by the name of Oscar Borg, did you know something or is this a coincidence?

Just wondering what everyone thinks if this result gauges anything as to where our possible strengths and weaknesses lie? I would like to see a good up and coming goalkeeper be part of the transfers. And needless to say replace Lovren and get some real punch in the attack.

Well we will have to see but it seems 20 mil Saints turned down for Lovren was their final bid. Chelsea are unlikely to be interested JM has already said his close season spending is finished.
Spurs are said to be interested in Morgan but it is thought that the price is too high for them as they have to sell to buy for that sort of transfer according to reports. Arsenal have turned their attention elsewhere apparently frightened off by the price and will only come back if desperate.
As always everything is conjecture and even if true can change again tomorrow but we just have to go with this a day at a time. In the meantime Koeman needs to see his squad in action and these games are ideal for the young kids to show their stuff and potential. You don't want to spend millions on a covering player if you have one in the club already.
I have faith that Koeman will do what is needed but until he sees his squad in action against reasonable opposition its awkward, ie Bournemouth.
A lot of players out tonight most for legitimate reasons, I like most want to see some transfers in, as a sign of intent. I think they will come and hopefully be the right ones.

This report is far off what happened. In the first half we moved the ball around well but chances were sketchy at best. The goal was soft and while we were unlucky to score more, we were more lucky to have not conceded! In the second half after the substitutions, Swindon took the game to Saints, moving the ball around nicely and at one point had an open goal. More is needed from saints to get stronger and on the evidence of this game we need to get better

Would have been disappointed had they not won this game bearing in mind that Eastleigh beat Swindon by 2-0 last week!!

These warm up games don't mean too much and I am sure 3-4 weeks from now RoKoe will have made a number of signings prior to the opening game at Anfield

Hardly a result to gloat about. When lovren and Morgan leave and Jrod later it would be 6 players gone. We will be starting with so many new faces. Scary thought!
PL can be unforgiving. I hope/pray we do well this season.

Osprey,
Have you noticed that after every win we are told that it was week opposition and the next game will give us a better indication of our level.
Even if we were to win Alltel friendlies we will be told that the diverpooh game is the real test! Beat them and it will be 'they weren't ready for the start of ' or 'we were lucky and the next few games is the real test' if we were to lose any of the games though it will be 'thats our level, if we cant beat X we are in trouble'!
Some people are never happy and will moan about everything! Let them do it we all know they wont stop. Best ignore idiots that keep mention you, they are desperate for a response, it makes their day to get a reply.

Why has this got five thumbs up? People not reading it properly or does that reflect the number of skates we have on this site (more than they have on the entire News site due to the rotting nature of their own club).

I'm actually really worried about this season. If we lose dl, ms and j rod, I fail to see how we will have a good season. All though I'm happy with the players Koeman has brought in, we ain't a big enough club to replace those players with like for like qualitys :/ not feeling optimistic about this season one bit.
