JUSTIN Rose finished the Open Championship with a par round of 72 to post a total score of 283 (-5) on the final day.

It left him tied in 23rd at the end of the event and finished 12 shots behind eventual winner Rory McIlroy.

The Northern Irishman who headed the field after the first day won the Claret Jug with rounds of 66, 66, 68 and 71 for a total score of 271 (-17).

He led by six shots going to the final day and ended it winning by two shots from Sergio Garcia and Rickie Fowler for his third major title.

Rose started the final day hoping for a top 10 finish as he was tied 12th.

It looked good for the north Hampshire golfer, as he hit birdies at the fourth and eighth to go to seven under.

He added another birdie at 10, but then it all when wrong for the former Robert May’s pupil as he dropped four shots in the space of three holes.

He struck a bogey at 12, a double bogey at 13 and then another bogey at 14.

He recovered with a birdie on 16 to finish on 72 and a total score of 283.

His first three rounds had seen him score 72, 70 and 69 which put him tied 12th going into the final day’s play.
