Pelle nets brace in Saints pre-season romp

Basingstoke Gazette: Graziano Pelle scores his second goal tonight. Graziano Pelle scores his second goal tonight.

Graziano Pelle marked his Saints debut in fine style as he scored twice in a 6-0 romp over Belgian minnows Sporting Hasselt.

The 29-year-old striker, signed for a fee of around £7m, took just five minutes to notch his first goal as he converted Lloyd Isgrove’s cross.

He added his and Saints’ second on 32 minutes, this time turning home from Jason McCarthy’s low ball into the box.

It helped Saints on their way to another very comfortable win to round off their trip to Belgium, having already beaten Dutch amateur side EHC Hoensbroek 4-0.

Ronald Koeman once again changed his entire side at half time as he gave game time to as many players as possible, and protected them from the heat the match was played in.

Sam McQueen scored his second goal in as many games to make it 3-0 on 59 minutes before Hasselt defender Tom Weerts turned into his own net after Harrison Reed’s dangerous ball in.

Emmanuel Mayuka added another on 78 minutes as he coolly tucked away a penalty after Billy Sharp’s attempted run was cut off by a handball in the area.

The scoring was rounded off three minutes from time as Sharp’s blocked shot rebounded to Gallagher who slotted home.

Saints now return home to prepare for three away friendlies on English soil, starting with Swindon on Monday night, before they round off their preparations for the new season by taking on Bayer Leverkusen at St Mary’s.

Saints first half: K Davis, McCarthy, Stephens, Hooiveld, Targett, Cork, Ward-Prowse, S Davis, Tadić, Isgrove, Pellè.

Saints second half: Boruc, Chambers, Fonte, Yoshida, Turnbull, Flannigan, Reed, Sharp, McQueen, Mayuka, Gallagher.

Goals: Pelle 5, 32, McQueen 59, Weerts og 70, Mayuka pen 78, Gallagher 87

Get in!! Sure the quality of the opposition was low but confidence is confidence, 2 goals for Pelle, fantastic news! This McQueen sound like he's gonna give Gallagher a run for his money as our "young sub" and pleased to see Sharp and Mayuka getting a run out, we need a healthy squad!!

Or redkrapp has been throwing money at wages again.
How can we compete with a club that runs financial figures like these from last season,
The results revealed Rangers lost £65m in a season, had a £68m wage bill that exceeded their entire turnover, and were £177m in debt.
Thats a season in the championship!
If qpr, palace and we all met the buy-out clause we can all offer personal terms and the players tend to pick the most money. If redkrapp is true to form he would have treated the owners money like monopoly money and offered huge wages.
I would rather lose out on a player than pay way over the top wages and get into that sort of debt.
If he had any sense and wasn't driven by wages surely as a centre back he would rather learn his trade from a manager who has been there and done it and was one of the best players in his position.

I don't want to be pessimistic but we ALL know that we needed at least FOUR players who were BETTER than we already had, BEFORE the three departures and we have only replaced two so far.
Our rivals are strengthening and so must we.

We MUST score 20+ more goals next season yet our Stike force is very weak. With J-Rod out until January; Gallagher not ready; Mayuka & Sharp not good enough and Osvaldo ? who knows, that only leaves Pelle who is untried against world class defenders in the Prem. So a PROVEN Striker who is BETTER than J-Rod & Pelle is urgently required , even a season long loanee like Lukaku if we can't buy one is an absolute must.

While I hope Matty Targett does come good, he is untried and may need this season to ease in. Therefore a new top LB is also urgently required to strengthen our defense along with a GK and CB, or 2 CB's if Lovren is off. The incoming players MUST be BETTER than we already have to improve the 11 players on the pitch. We must not waste money on players just for cover, the players who loose out become the cover.

We still need a good Winger who can cross for Pelle's head as a tactical option. If McQueen steps up then great but like the other youngsters they will give much needed competition for places.

So still at least FIVE first choice players to bring in to improve on last season and show Morgan the club does have ambition.
We CAN afford these players and RonKo CAN attract them, so Les Reed has a lot of work still to do in the next 3 weeks before the season starts.
Time is now ticking to get these 5 players in and 'hit the ground running'
I don't want to be posting on here in September that Saints missed the opportunity to strengthen early enough.

We must give RonKo a chance with a BETTER first choice squad, so come on Les & the board, get on with it.

For the record -- as Alan Hansen's criticism of Alex Ferguson's team selection policy early in 1995-96 continually crops up on these threads -- the "kids" of Manchester United won the Premiership and the FA Cup that season.
Another factor to consider is the number of comments insisting that we needed more Premiership experience than Kelvin and Steven Davis provided during the summer of 2012. That proved wrong as well.
There is no point in paying big money for an average talent if Matt Targett can do the job. And remember, there was plenty of posters on her back then saying Luke Shaw was too young to step up.

For the record, as we are saying it, that team included Peter Schmeichel, Steve Bruce, Gary Pallister and Eric Cantona. None of whom were 'kids'. Yes manure did bring through a few 'kid's that season but the team had a strong core of experienced players to build on. Cantona was in the form of his life, and just as the vampire made diverpooh a far better team, he did it with manure. The players manure brought through that season included butt, scholes, G. Neville and golden b0ll0cks everyone a future England multiple cap winner.
Yes we have some really exciting kids coming through but we still need some good quality experienced players to build on.

Our academy is the envy of Europe now.[/p]
To quote Alan Hansen, "Kids won't win you anything". I agree to a certain extent that we still need a mix of experience and youth. We're nowhere near having a strong enough squad to survive at this stage...no cover. We still need 5 more players. I beginning to worry that we really won't see any more though...[/p]
And remember, there was plenty of posters on her back then saying Luke Shaw was too young to step up.[/p]
Yes we have some really exciting kids coming through but we still need some good quality experienced players to build on. de Heiligen paard 101

The transfer window is a wheeling and dealing nightmare, in effect within knowledge of football and coaching it is a game within a game..

On the one hand we need to improve from last season, keep the possession but improve speed of attack, and firm up the defense, yet buying your way out of trouble can actually cause it..

..our two most expensive signings are at the moment dreadful value, Our academy is sos et up to promote from within that Our new striker plus Taduc would on a chance for chance basis score more than last year.

The doubts are definately defensive…the quality CB cover for Lovren and Fonte is beyond essential, I hardly think this will escape RoKo…

..interesting about last season that Chelsea side no-one blew us away and few created a lot of chances, stupid mistakes were at the heart of a lot of goals scored against us when we were dominating….focus can do wonderful things.

I think that to save the season - that has yet to start - we must urgently lobby the board to place Sammy2sheds in charge of all transfers, coaching and first team tactics. I like many I'm sure share the sense of utter despair and shame that we only won 6-0 last night and that our new signing - Pele - proved as useless as the experienced and perspicacious Sammy predicted. What insight and how much both Les and Ronald could lean from Sammy's obviously far greater football knowledge than theirs . Before we start the petition though just remind us of your CV and qualifications Sammy.
For my part I am actually but possibly naively optimistic that Les , Ron and the board are doing their very best working round the clock to ensure our continued success on and off the field - for the long term . I am looking positively forward to great new season exciting football and loads of goals. COYR

Come off it you are spouting again without knowing the facts, stop jumping to conclusions we don't know why Caulker has chosen QPR could it be money is talking? Harry Redknapp has a reputation of being extravagant when spending other peoples money wherever he's Managed, I read I think in Metro that Caulker was with Harry at Spurs so knows him and offered him a wage he couldn't refuse that perhaps SFC refused or couldn't match and we all know very often Players follow there Managers as Pelle has with Ronald.
Sammy you can't resist being what you are a WUM and you often slag off the Board in particular as if they are incompetent and they are not, they go about there business with diligence 24/7 and will do there best to get who they consider the best for the Club, Les Reed has the task of persuading top Players to the Club and he's not always going to be successful and he's definitely not going to announce a possible signing to appease the Supporters he'd be wasting his breath, only when a deal is done will the Supporters be told and rightly so.
On Saints Site today is a short Video of yesterdays game and I can inform you and those that haven't got the Site that Ronald and his Team are starting afresh by giving most if not all the Players the chance to prove they are good enough to play in the top flight, even Jack Stephens who played on loan for Swindon played, Mayuka, Billy Sharp and many young players who have made it from the Academy were included, rest assured Ronald with his is vast experience will have an abundance of talented Players to pick from and will pick the very best, who knows Jack Stephens could be the Player to compete with Lovren because he played regular at Swindon and they want him back that's how highly Mark Cooper rates him.
Patients is what we must all digress to allow the Club to do the business that is required that cannot be done over the Kitchen Sink, when a Player is on the radar secrecy is the only way to deal with the situation and not reveal the Players name as that could jeopardise signing the Player and alert other Managers. I have every trust SFC will have everything ready for the coming season and any additional Players will be in the Club also ready to help the Club progress onwards and upwards.

If RK likes Pelle then so be it. Time will tell and im hopeful. Two goals against amateurs is the minimum i would expect.. But then again its just a warm up match... So welcome and may the force be with him.

My doubts are with Sharpe, Mayuka Hoifeld and maybe Yoshida too. Strong championship level players ..but Premiership ??? Squad level at best.

Still a lot of gaps to bolster.. And lets face it Lovren will go.

I hope that we stuff Liverpool on day 1... Dont care if its lucky..

Calm down Les Reed!! No need to hate on them for leaving, I just don't care about them anymore. It's funny how noboby can say a bad word against the board or signings with you around but your the first to slag off our former players who got us where we are, good luck to them I just hope we prove them wrong. Your definitely Les Reed in disguise.
