IAN Callaway produced two solid rounds to claim the men’s club championship at Hartley Wintney.

A total of 71 members entered the event, which took place over 36 holes and two days at the north Hampshire course.

Callaway survived some tricky conditions on day one, sharing the lead with Lee Poulter after both shot rounds of 73 (+2).

The weather was much kinder on day two, but while Poulter faded out of contention, Callaway produced a solid second round of 74 (+3) to finish on +5, six shots clear of his nearest rivals, Mark Chandler and Tom Winder.

The nett competition was a much closer affair. Poulter led after 18 holes but Roly Newman and Kevin Pitcher were the two main contenders going down the last.

Newman had a two-shot lead on the tee but found trouble down the final hole, giving Pitcher his chance. He made no mistake, rolling in a 10-foot par putt to finish with a nett score of 136 (-6), two shots clear of Newman. Vice captain Phil Welch was a further shot back in third.

Another Hartley golfer celebrating at the moment is Deirdre Randall, who won both the scratch and handicap prizes at the Hampshire Ladies Senior Championship, which took place at Hayling Island GC.

122 members of the club contested the Coronation Cup, with James Woodland’s total of 42 points, a round that included two birdies, earning him victory. Jamie Mullen was a point behind in second, with Stephen Key a further three back in third.

Cheryl Scott won the Churchill Cup, a nett score of 145 (+3) for 36 holes giving her a four-shot margin over runner up Jan Newman. Linda Turner was three shots further back in third.

The ladies’ Centenary Trophy was won by Pat Stow, who beat Turner on countback after both recorded a score of 38 points. Gill Melody was two points back in third.
