Pelle set for Saints debut

Basingstoke Gazette: Graziano Pelle Graziano Pelle

Graziano Pelle will make his first appearance in a Saints shirt tonight, as the club conclude their pre-season trip to Belgium.

The striker, who followed Ronald Koeman from Feyenoord in a deal thought to be worth around £7m, joined up with the squad on their training camp this week and is set to be given 45 minutes against Sporting Hasselt tonight.

Pelle was in the stands for Tuesday’s match against EHC Hoensbroek, as Saints hopped over the border to beat the Dutch minnows 4-0.

The 29-year-old only linked up with his teammates on Monday night, but, having now had a few training sessions under his belt, he will see some action against this evening’s opponents, who play in the Belgian third division.

The 6ft 4in Italian has been signed as a replacement for Rickie Lambert and, after two sensational seasons in the Eredivisie, where he scored 50 goals in 57 league appearances, the forward will be hoping to make a fast start with his new club.

Pelle is one of five players on the trip who did not feature in the first game, along with Dejan Lovren, Maya Yoshida, Artur Boruc and Jay Rodriguez.

Lovren, Yoshida and Boruc were not yet ready for a match, having only just started their pre-season preparations, while Rodriguez is expected to be out injured until October.

Rodriguez will obviously not play tonight, but the other three may be used.

It will be particularly interesting to see the reaction of Lovren if he does feature, with the disenchanted defender still hoping for a summer move to Liverpool.

Saints boss Koeman wants to keep hold of the 25-year-old, who has been the subject of two failed bids from the Reds in recent weeks, but Lovren has already admitted he feels as though his head is at Anfield.

The Croatian international is Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers’ number-one defensive target, and it is expected that last season’s runners-up in the Premier League will make another attempt to sign him.

Tonight’s game, which kicks off at 6pm UK time, should also offer a second glimpse of summer signing Dusan Tadic.

The Serbian playmaker, who joined from FC Twente in an £11m deal, was handed a run out in the second half of Tuesday’s victory.

Koeman will also be keen to have another look at 19-year-old winger Sam McQueen, who scored the opener against Hoensbroek and set up Calum Chambers for the second, marking him out as the star of the show during his first-half appearance.

After tonight’s match, Saints will return home to begin the domestic part of their pre-season schedule.

They will travel to Swindon on Monday night and then Bournemouth on Friday evening next week.

Those games will be followed by a visit to Brighton, on Thursday, July 31, and the home fixture against Bayer Leverkusen, on Saturday, August 9.

It will be good to see Lovrens response. I think he will be forgiven if he was to publicly apologise for his comments in the press... he was a very silly boy!

Really looking forward to the season now, just a couple more little signings... a left back to work with Matt and a central defender... I see Vegard Forren is playing well over here ;-)

Come on Brenda take notice of what the man said! There are loads of equally good defenders you can have for much less money, so if you continue to try for Dejan we can only assume that you have ulterior motives!

Agree, does make you wonder that he has an agenda against us. If he acquires all of his targets then he would have signed a third of our squad!
Let Brenda do one and look elsewhere for a ****ing change, we need to build ourselves for what could be another great season.
Beating the "Shell-suits" on our first game would be a good start and somewhat poetic!

I agree with all the comments on Lovren. Why can't Rodgers just back off and leave our club alone and look elsewhere. He has clearly been told that we are not selling any more of our players . All this will continue to unsettle Lovren.
We actually need to add quality to our side not dilute it.!
The weeks are getting closer to the start of the season and it would be nice to know what other players if any they are looking for to bolster the team. I am just a little worried that things may be on hold until RK has seen the strengths and weaknesses of the current squad. Plus what's happening with Osvaldo is he still in his sick bed or is he going to join pre season training.
Some answers would be nice in these areas

Why can’t Rodgers “just back off an leave our club alone...”?
Because he is a clever man and he is well aware that that Southampton have a better youth development system and scouting strategies than Liverpool, and that it will take some time for Liverpool to build a football culture as good or better. And, pulling in playerds imbued with Saints' ethos should help accelerate the process.
It is worth reading up John W. Henry’s Wikipidia profile, to assess where Liverpool are most likely headed. He is not infallible, but he knows what he is doing.
On the bright side, the fact remains that the current Saints’ set-up is based on sounder foundations.

QPR have apparently made a £4 offer for Ron Vlaar,,,,surely he's the sort of player we could be going for along with the likes of Caulker and not break the bank...a lot of good players that aren't over priced being linked to other premier teams no better than us...west ham, qpr, newcastle, hull..all seem to be doing good business and with plenty of time to bed in before the season starts. I'm pleased we have started to dip toe in transfer market but we all recognise that we are 4 or 4 players short and the season is creeping closer...

Unfortunately it isn't that simple Seed.

I asked Ronald via Mrs Wilson if he really means what he says and he told her, somewhat tersely, to tell me he "always says what he means, which is the same thing."

I had to point out that it isn't the same thing at all - or "I see what I eat" would be the same as "I eat what I see." and "I like what I get" would be the same as "I get what I like". I advised him to read Alice in Wonderland with some urgency.

Anyway, he told me to "bugger off", which I think is disrespectful of the fan base and he should apologise at the next press conference - assuring everyone beforehand that he will indeed mean what he says.

We all hope that Pelle proves to be OK but Saints do not have any proven firepower up front.
J-Rod is out until at least January, Gallagher is not ready yet, Mayuka and Sharp are not good enough and Osvaldo - well you tell me ?
So no options or competition for Pelle up front, at 29 would give us a big problem if he does not prove it in this league.

We MUST score 20+ more goals this season so URGENTLY need a PROVEN Striker who is hopefully a bit younger. Even a season long loanee like Lukaku would be good.

A STRIKER who is BETTER than J-Rod & Pelle Plus a replacement LB are the two Priorities for Les Reed to sort out, a GK, CB and Winger can follow before the window closes.

We must not waste any more money on players just for cover. We must bring in players who are BETTER than what we have got to improve the 11 on the pitch. The existing players that loose out become the cover.

We CAN afford the 5 players needed & RonKo CAN attract them.

No it won't.

If Lovren keeps pushing for a move, and gets it, it will just confirm that players have too much power, and confirm that clubs, outside of the biggest, cannot afford to have a valuable asset, sat on his backside, going to waste.

Personally, I'd love it if Katharina had a face to face, with Lovren, and told him that she would be happy to pay his wages, for the duration of his contract, whether he earns the money by playing his heart out, for the club, or if he spends the rest of his contract on gardening leave. But it won't happen.

137 and counting and that doesn't take account of all our thumbs down.

I guess there's not much to do on a chilly winter evening in Melbourne suburbia after a day which consisted only of signing on, downing a few tinnies and jealously checking what's happening in the world of your superior footballing rivals.

However, try as I might, it's hard to feel sorry for the sad, lonely skunt!

I am not bothered, my ST was delivered today, bring it on. OSPREYSAINT

i would laugh if he becomes top scorer in prem next season , the dutch league cant be that bad , if he gets the supply he s gonna score at least as many as rick which was rons aim ,and i will trust rk s judgement over yours anyday !fingers crossed saints still looking at some quality players , we all know how SFC operate when it comes to transfers , under the radar as much as possible , you need to lighten up sammy and have some faith, my glass is 3 quarters at the mo , i reckon every one of our players will progress under koeman he s a real football man who can smell a good player a mile off ! Slightly off topic

I know were all moaning about our club being r*ped by the big boys, but spare a thought for Feyenoord, they have lost so far

Koeman - SOuthampotn
Pelle - Southampotn
Martins Indi - FC Porto
Jarrylnet - Newcastle

De Vrij and Konghulo are linked with us and a whole host of other clubs, no matter how bad it is - there is always someone worse and this summer it appears to be Feyenoord. the price of finishing 2nd and getting into the Champions League.

Stephen De Vrij looked good in the WC & at 23yrs he would be a great investment.
As to would Terence Kongolo bit younger but one for the future.

Most Urgent though is a proven Top STRIKER and a replacement LB.

Totally agree noodles - where was our biggest problem last season? Converting all the chances we created into goals, and it looks like we have a positive option in Pelle.

Keep the faith
