Saints were back on the training pitch in Belgium this morning, after last night's friendly win against Dutch minnows EHC Hoensbroek.

Ronald Koeman and his coaching staff put the players, including latest signing Graziano Pelle, through their paces before analysing yesterday's 4-0 victory.

Saints will be back in action tomorrow night, when they play Belgian third division outfit Sporting Hasselt.

They will then return home, ahead of the start of their domestic friendlies, which begins with Monday's trip to Swindon.

Good to see Benali and Le Tiss being interviewed at St Marys on the official site - hopefully they are back in the camp under the new regime.

Keep scouring the photos of training to see if I can spot one of Lovren looking happy - but no luck yet!

Nonetheless, it does seem to me that Ronald and co are starting to get positive vibes going. A few more signings and I'll be really looking forward to starting with my new season tickets which arrived today. Lubbly jubbly!

i see Southampton docks is on 24 tonight, surprised Brenda didn't put a bid in to take it there!

as for `we will be playing the kids this year` didn't we do that last season to great affect? that's what having the best academy in the country allows you to do! I expect to see some more signings with a surprise or 2 thrown into the mix. then we wont be `marking anyones words` but a few people will be eating theirs!

I hope the signings are sooner rather than later. If it's all last minute they will have to gel in competitive matches rather than pre-season. What looked like a relatively easy start (no games are easy but you know what I mean) could go against us as points could be lost and as they start to get it together tough fixtures come along.

echo1948,

Thank you for your instruction not to hold my breath. Mauricio Pochettino played a few kids last season, but unfortunately did not even try the players loaned out. Jason Puncheon proved the possibility that fringe players can make the grade. He did well in the Premier League, both with Saints and with Crystal Palace. I therefore hope that Ronald Koeman is wise enough to give all our current players equal opportunity to impress. Perhaps he will even help improve those players who have returned after being loaned. It is often the case that a new manager has a different opinion than his predecessor about the abilities of certain players.

I think it would be great if our new manager can save Saints some money by helping to develop as many as possible of the players already at the club. It is likely, though, that more new players will be bought to improve the quality of the first team squad. It also seems likely that

This week is about seeing who will step up , who is past their sell by date and were we need to by in, so my guess is in - GK LB And Striker. Plus CB only if DL goes. We will see more of the "kids" but look again most of them look like brick outhouses and have learnt their trade . Confident we will not be let down by them or by Ron.

echo1948,

(Continuation)

It also seems likely that Saints will loan out more players during the new season. Going out on loan can improve a player or give him more experience.

Please rest assured that plenty of people on this forum will be marking your words and those people will also be marking mine!

Question is are we looking to improve on last season or just consolidate.

We all know and were saying since Christmas that we required FOUR Quality players who are BETTER than what we had in order for us to improve next season.

THAT IS STILL THE REQUIREMENT, a GK, CB, Winger & STRIKER.

What has changed is that we lost a First Choice LB, Striker & AM capt.
Hopefully we have replaced two of these with just a LB to get in and get us back to last seasons level, so we still require FIVE players better than we already have.

I agree with others that it would be brilliant to see more academy players step up but there was no sign of one just yet from what we saw last season, at best they may provide competition for places.
Therefore do we consolidate to give them time to hopefully step up the following season, OR do we sign the players needed to improve.
Remember our rival teams are strengthening already.

Even if we keep the rest of our players (which will depend on some waiting to see who we do sign) we must get a better GK, LB, CB, Winger & Striker to show the ambition, we CAN afford them and RonKo CAN attract them. Any emerging young player will be a bonus.

Matty Targett is as yet untried but still need competition for places so a top LB is still required to replace Luke.

The other priority of the 5 players needed is a BETTER Striker than we have got because we must score at least 20+ more goals next season. With J-Rod out until January, Gallagher not quite ready, Mayuka and Sharp not good enough, we only have Pelle who has no Premiership experience.

Therefore surely we all know that a LB & STRIKER must be added urgently, then the GK, CB, and Winger can follow before the window closes. Even a season long loan player like Lukaku would be good, if we can't buy all five.

However we must not waste money on players just for cover, we need to improve the 11 on the pitch if we are to push on.

I thought RonKo would have gone back to Feyenord for one of their dutch world cup CB's but we have missed out on two already, one to Newcastle and one to Porto.

Les Reed has a lot to do, 5 players required at one per week.
If we do not sign these then we are looking to consolidate at best, rather than improve this season.

I hope the latter, so come on Les get them in asap, no time off yet !

I welcome comments from others who disagree with my opinion.
