Last chance to impress for Basingstoke Town triallists

Basingstoke Gazette: Jason Bristow faces some tough decisions when it comes to Town triallists Jason Bristow faces some tough decisions when it comes to Town triallists

BASINGSTOKE Town’s triallists will get another chance to impress manager Jason Bristow tonight, when the squad make the trip to Hungerford Town.

A total of 12 triallists featured in Basingstoke’s games against Yeovil and Reading Under-21s over the last week. However, Bristow is planning to trim his squad before Tuesday’s home game against League Two side Newport County (kick-off 7.30pm), so tonight’s trip to Hungerford (7.45pm) could be their last chance to make a mark.

“The triallists are getting good game-time under their belts, and Hungerford should be another good game for that,” Bristow said.

“After that game, we should have a better idea of where we are with them, but it’s going to be tough, because each of them offers something different. I have been excited by what I have seen so far in pre-season and believe that it’s good for us to have all these guys trying to prove themselves here.”

One triallist already assured of his place in the squad for the coming season is striker Chris Flood, who signed for the club after Tuesday’s 1-0 win over a young Reading side.

The 24-year-old began his career at Salisbury, while Crawley paid £10,000 for his services in 2010. After leaving the Sussex club, he had spells at Dorchester Town and Eastleigh in the Conference South.

Bristow said: “We know all about Chris from previous years. He’s got fantastic pace and an eye for goal. We see him as a striker, but we know he can also operate on the wing.”

Basingstoke held League One Yeovil to a 1-1 draw on Saturday, Manny Williams bundling home their equaliser early in the second half, while Liam Enver-Marum scored the only goal of the game against Reading.
