Saints have made an improved contract offer to Jay Rodriguez, with negotiations expected to continue after the pre-season trip to Belgium.

The club are understood to have tabled enhanced terms to the forward last week, after initially submitting a proposal for a new five-year deal a few months ago.

Discussions began around the time Rodriguez ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, during April’s 4-1 defeat at Manchester City.

Despite the injury, which is expected to rule the 24-year-old out until October, Saints have remained keen to tie Rodriguez down to a fresh, long-term contract.

The England international, who is admired by Tottenham, with Liverpool and Arsenal also reportedly interested, has two years left on his current deal at St Mary’s.

He is set to discuss the improved offer after returning from this week’s trip abroad.

Rodriguez’s current deal dates back to when he signed from Championship club Burnley in 2012, just before Saints began their first campaign back in the top-flight.

His performances and progression since then have merited an improved offer, with the forward scoring 15 Premier League goals last season and earning senior international honours.

Had it not been for his knee injury, Rodriguez may have won a place in England’s World Cup squad this summer.

His rehabilitation is said to have been progressing extremely well and he joined his teammates this week for their pre-season training camp in Belgium.

Rodriguez’s contract is not the only one that Saints must consider this summer.

The club, and Koeman, are also weighing up whether to offer fresh terms to players such as Jack Cork, Jose Fonte, Artur Boruc, Maya Yoshida and Jos Hooiveld, all of who are out of contract next summer.

Saints are also working on adding more pieces to their squad, having already completed the captures of Dusan Tadic and Graziano Pelle.

The club are said to have had an approach for Norwich winger Nathan Redmond knocked back.

This is the kind of loyalty to our employees that some current (and ex) players would do well to remember.

I don't expect Lovren would be complaining about his nice contract if he got crocked.

Shows a lot of faith in the player and modern medicine! We need to keep him, we don’t want to lose any more of our key players. I do ultimately think the rest of Lovren’s body will join his head but no more players to go hopefully. I was wrong about KL thinking she had no interest in the club and I was wrong thinking JR wasn’t the best buy. Shows what can happen when you give a player (or manager) more than 5 minutes to impress.

I know I'll get a lot of thumbs down for this. AS THINGS STAND saints is a stepping stone for mangers and players who harbour dreams of representing other so called big clubs. We supporters need to recognise this fact of life. Sad but true.

How can saints compete with likes of Man U who have just signed a 10 yr kit deal worth £750 million? The money in football is obscene and it has corrupted the game. Loyalty is scarce to find.

Prove me wrong Jay! Commit your best years to saints. Signing a contract means nothing. Our last captain proved that.

I see Brenda has signed a Serbian winger/forward yesterday.
After buying 2 of our players and trying to sign the rest of our squad his desperation has gone from him wanting our team to copying who we buy. Expect to see diverpooh make a bid for an Italian striker next!
Has he really got no ideas of his own?
I personally think Brenda could lose his job this season. He blew the title last year by throwing away a big lead in the palace game. He has now spent a lot of money buying players from a team who finished 8th amongst others, as replacements for the vampire but has so far failed to bring in any big name players. His record of signings at diverpooh is quite poor and after they get knocked out of the champions league in the group stage and have a poor start to the prem I can see diverpooh giving him the boot and I don't think any of us would shed a tear for him!

Come on J-rod sign your new deal and show that you are willing to stay at the club that gave you your big break, for now at least!

I think JRod owes it to saints to sign. Even if a move away is on his mind, he must surely back himself (he is an outstanding talent after all) to still attract attention. With this contract in place it would ensure that Saints get a true return on their investment at worst, a statement of intent and a great player commited to the club at best. I hope he signs but just as importantly I would like to see a good contract to Cork offered and accepted. He wasn't Paine's choice for player of the year for nothing.

not sure it was made public by anyone.
it was on sky yesterday as `sky sports sources`.
sky are usually pretty good at breaking stories like this and transfers so most other media outlets take it as read that its true, so do most of us fans. it was sky who first said that luke was going for his medical and that lielanna was heading to diverpooh for his medical.

Good move buy Saints to show that we do want to keep our best players.
Next is to offer Morgan an improved contract and make him our captain because he is our most important player and the only one likely to start every game.

We do still need a LB to replace Luke and get back to last seasons level and then a better GK and CB to improve the defense.
A top quality Winger with a good cross for Pelle's head as an option, but I am most concerned about the Striker position.

We MUST score at least 20+ more goals next season, so a new STRIKER is a Top Priority. With J-Rod out until at least January, we only have Pelle and he is untried in the Premiership. Osvaldo, well who knows !!
Gallagher is not ready, Mayuka and Sharp not good enough.
Therefore we MUST get a proven Striker who is BETTER than Pelle and J-Rod to get the goals and give competition for places.

A season long loan like Lukaku will do if we can't sign one, but without a top striker we will struggle, no matter how good the rest of the team are.

So FIVE first choice players are still required, thats at least one per week Les Reed !! We CAN afford them but Please do not waste money on players just for cover. We need to improve the 11 on the pitch if we are to show ambition and make progress.

Who is to say that its the club that made it public. Could have come from Jrods side.
Think we should get all the players who have one year left on to longer contracts. Even if they become surplus to requirements we can get a fee rather than them walking away on a Bosman
That is the one positive about the players we have lost, we have got good money for them so we can reinvest in the team. I am giving the board the benefit of the doubt on that. Although I do not think we will spend everything this transfer window, I think we might just keep our powder dry. I hope than RoKo can get the best out of Ramirez, and I also hope that Osvaldo comes to his senses(long shot I know) Osvaldo showed with his goal against Citeh that he is a class act, just needs to get his head together, bottle down and work hard.
Nathan Redmond would be a good buy, quick and knows where the goal is. Also hoping that Mayuka comes good, he was one of the top 20 young players in the world when we brought him. We have lost three players and acquired two, it remains to be seen whether the replacements are as good, better or worse than those that have departed for the grim north. However, that's what makes football the game it is, everyone has an opinion, we can all play or manage England from our armchairs.

This is exactly what they need to do. The club has been severely criticised these last few weeks, not least by me, for showing a lack of ambition. Here we can see they offered a new contract to Jay Rod several months ago which he obviously hasn't signed. They have now enhanced that offer, if he still refuses to sign and asks for a transfer I would not be so harsh on the club as I can see they have tried.

Why Jack Cork is constantly treated as the forgotten man by the club is a complete mystery to me. He seemed to not be in MoPo's inner circle and then told a friend of mine at the awards dinner that Kreuger had only briefly spoken to him twice. We really do seem to be doing our best to demotivate a young man who is right up there with the best we've got.

If he turns it down it will only add fuel to the fire. Lets face it, even if he doesnt agree it in the nect couple of days, it will add fuel to the fire. What does this mean to Jack Cork and Fonte, they only have a year on their contracts and currently fit!

We really do seem to be doing our best to demotivate a young man who is right up there with the best we've got.
hopefully Koeman can rectify that…sometimes a player and manager do not see eye to eye and maybe a CEO who cares can keep them settled although WTF directors dealing direct with footballers is all about mystifies me…Clough said that the one common thing about Chairman was they knew nothing about football…well ours certainly does not!

Call round the coast to confirm the replication date of the offline version

I’m not sure where the improved offer information has come from but I don’t think its to saints advantage that its been made public. It doesn’t detail how much he has been offered ect so no-one can speculate why (if he did) refuse to sign.

Personally I wouldn’t be too harsh on the club in most situations. I d rather we lived within our means tbh, and i sure that they are doing what they can.

The situation with Cork REALY needs sorting out, its news that I want to here about. It would be a great sign of intent if he did sign. I also don’t think we can allow Fonte's contract to run down either. Unless we keep Lovren and sign 2x CBs will would be short in that (very key) area.

I agree it's not for the directors to deal with the players but they should have good relationships with them like any work colleagues and not just ignore them!

The thing is it's difficult to be balanced in your view with little or no info. Take the recent exodus, was it a lack of ambition by the club not being prepared to pay appropriate wages and invest in the squad or was it a bunch of greedy barstwerds showing no loyalty and running off to perceived bigger clubs at the drop of a hat? We need to be wary of just falling into line because the club can hide behind its secrecy and take advantage of that but at the same time we wouldn't want to blame the club and directors if there literally was nothing they could do about it.

The large sums of money are only of use if we able to persuade quality players to come here. We can't keep rebuilding otherwise we will not progress or even match our current position. If we are perceived as a selling club it will affect the thinking of those we pursue. It could put the long term thinkers off joining whilst encouraging those who want to use us as a stepping stone.

This whole concept of buying better for cheaper is lovely but in the real world will only happen occasionally.

We are seen as a selling club by the media, our competitors, by fans of other clubs and by some of our own fans so the only way to change that is not to sell for a long period of time - other than those we wish to move on.

Are we going to make signings or are we going to see if Osvaldo, Mayuka and Sharp can suddenly deliver and the return of previous first teamers that got pushed out as we grew such as Hoover and Yoshida?

This whole concept of buying better for cheaper is lovely but in the real world will only happen occasionally.
totally agree and when this all settles down then one "big" player per window is not a problem..... we are not a selling club.... we are a club in transition and we had a few shallow players whose loyalty was to pounds sterling and glamour. We will be fine , we will be more than fine... :-)
We are seen as a selling club by the media, our competitors, by fans of other clubs and by some of our own fans so the only way to change that is not to sell for a long period of time - other than those we wish to move on.

Are we going to make signings or are we going to see if Osvaldo, Mayuka and Sharp can suddenly deliver and the return of previous first teamers that got pushed out as we grew such as Hoover and Yoshida?
yep interesting points.. the media is a bit of an illusion though.... I am sure we are a "selling" club in waves... we are soon to be moving to a different phase... the players you mentioned I think could indeed do well under the new Manager.... possibly not Osvaldo....
We need to stop selling our best players or we will only stop being a selling club purely because no one is interested in any of our team any more!

I sincerely hope this all ends well but it strikes me as a very high risk strategy.

I'm turning into your Referee again and I don't like your stupid post so I am giving you a caution and a yellow card, you've had several warnings from me and now it's time to shut up, just when I thought you had changed after my previous warnings you emerge from your hole and spout nonsense, now let's see it's 15 minutes past 1am there for you in Australia or should I say 15 minutes past 4 probably spitting distance from where I live near the City of Southampton so it's perfect time for you to read this over your first Beer of the day and post something positive and stop being a WUM that also can be changed to begin with a B it's so much nicer and you know it makes sense there's a good lad, do you love The Saints like I do, I think you do?
Malcolm you know I love the saints.your the best person on here, the rest are peasants.as soon as the club make a positive move I will become positive.

As soon as they score, you might cheer, eh?
The club are on the lookout for more quality fans like you, you're as bad as the mutineers.

If he does sign the new contract then we may want to start crocking all our players towards the end of the season if they look like they might get an England call-up.

We need to keep them away from the poisonous England set-up with its tapping up brigade of aging under-achievers.
Well, after Stevie G's announcement, Lamps is the only 'ageing under-achiever' left unless of course you consider Roon Wayney to fit the bill.

Apparently Woy is considering Wayney for the aptaincy - what a laugh. A useless, overwieght lump of lard who did nothing in Brazil. Pathetic. Actually not a laugh at all; instead it makes you want to crry.

If he was still a Saint, I'd be calling for Lallana as England captain but no longer. His disloyalty has spent all the capital he had with this supporter and I'd guess, quite a few more.
