DEJAN Lovren today returned to Saints - a week after admitting he had set his heart on a move to Liverpool.

Boss Ronald Koeman said at his press conference on Friday that he expected the wantaway Croatian centre half to report back at the club today.

Lovren has promptly done as requested and was part of the Saints party that left for a short pre season tour to Belgium today.

Lovren handed in a transfer request prior to the World Cup starting, but Koeman insisted last Friday that he did not want to sell any more players.

Am glad he showed up and i hope he stays even with what has happened, End of the day good defenders are hard to come by these days he is one of the best in the league which is why Liverhampton want him if we have to sell then sell him aboard not to a rival....... rather we sold him for 1 million to a spanish team than to sell to a prem team for 50 million........we should never sell any player to a club in the Prem it is a direct rival and is a stupid thing to do

I am not convinced that he was totally to blame, I suspect a mix up in communication may be involved here. As ever, I try to look for the positives, there is no reason why an amicable settlement cannot be worked out, perhaps the "contract on the table" may influence things? I am sure some of those that have been slagging him off have no idea what really has transpired other than believing a few tweets which may or may not have been genuine.

Personally if it were down to me and he didn't want to stay with a positive attitude in place I would sell him.

The ball is firmly in his own court, the attitude of some of our, possibly misguided, fans won't have helped the situation, but it would be a shame to let a player of his ability go, and in particular to another Premier Club. If he has to go it must be for top dollar to lessen the blow.

Pressing with intensity
Eplindex.com identified four categories that cover the multitude of ‘pressing triggers’ utilised by Pochettino at Southampton and Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool, who is also said to be a Bielsa-ite, along with FC Bayern’s Pep Guardiola and Chile coach Jorge Sampaoli, to name four of many:
Attacking team are not organised/yet to transition into a shape that supports ball retention.
Opponent’s conditions for control are not present/yet to be created (e.g. the ball is loose from a poor touch, or bouncing, or swirling in the wind, or slow from a backpass.)
Patterned traps (the example given is of Southampton forcing Liverpool to the edge of their left-hand touchline near the half-way line, ensuring they had nowhere to go and making them powerless to dispossession, in their shock 1-0 win at Anfield last September.)
Pressure in relation to risk (that is, when to use man-to-man pressing, option-based pressing – which attempts to force the ball into a certain area – or zonal pressing.)

A contract is a 2 sided affair and I tend to agree. The only reason I can see that we let Adam and Luke go is that we were offered much, much more than thir market wortk. Just can't see that at all.

I don't subscribe to the theory that Board members are in a secret conspiracy to do down the fans and the Club so I have no understanding of why they were left.

The line is now drawn very clearly in the sand and I hope that anyone with a contract will now only be let go will be for the needs of the Club.

Anyone foolish enough to play the silly bug*er after this weekend gets the full treatment - including the remaining "big" names. I mean, hard, unrelenting, scrupulously fair and with every opportunity, at any time, to rejoin the Team

In any event, they know that we appreciate and love them.

He's a fine player but to acquiesce to him is a big mistake. Whilst the circumstances are very different look how Diverpool got burnt by Suarez every single time they did it.

If no one want's to offer our valuation then i suppose i could just about accept him playing again after an unequivocal public apology. And i don't mean a statement, on camera. But let's face it, that'll never happen.

I remember Yohan Cabaye refusing to play for Newcastle when Arsenal put in a bid for him. He was denied the move and I don’t believe he was ever the same player again for the Magpies, they eventually off-loaded him to PSG.
Not all cases are necessarily the same, but I don’t have a good feeling about Dejan giving last season type performances for us if he is in a Saints shirt next season.

Lots off people on here seem desperately keen to forgive and forget now that he hasn't carried out his reported threat ( made through "friends" admittedly) to go on strike and not report back for pre-season. Could it be that he has returned in order not to breach his contract, with a view to negotiating his way to Liverpool where, those with apparently short memories need reminding, he has a pressing reunion with his head?! I'm all for forgiveness and giving the guy a second chance if that's what he genuinely wants, but I'll need a lot more evidence of his commitment to the Saints if I'm going to be convinced of his future worth to the club. Surely, even though it may be disappointing, it is more likely that he'll be gone sooner rather than later but on Saints' terms rather than his own or Liverpool's?

I'm strongly in favour of selling him, mainly for the example you've already cited. That and the fact i'd be a hypocrite to cheer on someone who's made comments that clearly damage the club.

He's been with us one year. I don't buy all the " i was promised this and this cr@p" That's gone,as are the personnel who promised it. The club didn't lie to him, the people making those alleged promises did. Well more fool him ( and his agent ) for believing them.

It gives Ron the chance to work with him and explain his plans for the coming season. A chance he was not afforded in the case of Adam and Luke despite assurances from Les that it would be up to the new manager.

I suspect he's going to give Ron Ko some time during this away trip to see how its all looking, which is the fairest way to play it. If he feels there's still a great team vibe and high ambition he will be persuaded to stay.
In return, Ron Ko will also be assessing Lovren to see where his head is, hopefully not still away with the fairies at Liverhampton, but if it is then Ron will take the initiative himself to move him on. After-all, it is Ron who is the Team Manager not any individual player!

Just tell him he is not for sale and if you do not give us 100% on the pitch then you will be sat on the bench until your contract expires. This would show any future players that contracts will be honoured and the club will not be used as a steping stone. This also might make the other clubs in this league leave us alone as we would no longer be an easy touch. Toughen up board and back your manager that states he does NOT want anymore players sold.
We must all be ready to foregive and forget , that's board players and fans and all unite and all pull in the same direction.

The ball is firmly in his own court, the attitude of some of our, possibly misguided, fans won't have helped the situation, but it would be a shame to let a player of his ability go, and in particular to another Premier Club. If he has to go it must be for top dollar to lessen the blow.

I always find myself in total agreement with OSPREYSAINT. I said in several posts last week that if RonKo cannot persuade him to stay nobody can. Now that he has joined the team in Belgium it seems almost certain that he'll want to stay. He can see our club's huge ambition and he'll realise that we have a better manager now (or an even better manager now - depending on one's views on Poch) who has far greater experience. I also agree that Lovren's words may well have been distorted by the media. So, after he apologises, let all us Saints fans put it all behind us and give him our support - he'll need that to regain his confidence, so we can all help.

Regrettable, but we can't afford any passengers in the camp. Tadic and Pelle look like promising signings. Would like to see Sharp and Mayuka given another chance. Get rid of Osvaldo though. Complete idiot. Use the money on further signings to strengthen squad. Areas where we are weak - goalkeeper (don't fancy any of the current four), left back (need experienced cover for Targett, unless we're going to convert Clyne?), centre back (particularly if Lovren goes).

He is on holiday till end next week. Most World Cup players get a 2 or 3 week break. Morgan said he would talk with RonKo when he is back which is the correct way to behave.

Hopefully RonKo will convince him the club is moving forward, make him captain and offer him an improved contract. Would be our best signing.

If Ronald can swing it I'm sure he'll breathe a sigh of relief cos he walked into a very unstable situation.

I agree entirely. I seem to remember we paid about £6m for Lovren. If we kept him, and retained his license without him playing, I think it would be a form of investment for the future. We must put down a marker to players, managers, directors and owners that we are not going to be walked over. I see your point, but playing as a professional is more than just having the right technical skills. Loyalty, and the ability to understand and support the "brand" that that is paying your wages come into it. There is a way to behave and there is a way to speak to the press. Most professional sports people understand this these days. For example, Formula 1 motor racing drivers know how to behave off the track, otherwise they would soon be driving stock cars. That is because they don't bit the hand that feeds them. How would any club that takes Lovren have confidence in him? How would Liverpool's supporters have faith in his loyalties? Lovren should think on, apologise to the Club and supporters and work his socks off for the next four seasons for SFC. If he isn't prepared to that his license should be withheld, without pay.

Why is it that some Supporters in particular some poster cannot be convinced that Adam and Luke wanted to leave, Les Reed has a job that deals with the Players and he shouldn't be undermined, he probably tried to talk them into staying until he was black in the face but they wanted to leave so Les says something like we will only sell if it's good for the Club and he's right, Les has to be diplomatic when dealing with the media and has to choose his words carefully, he doesn't set out to deceive the Supporters, take Luke for example he wanted away because he was in the clique of Players under the influence of Potchettino and so he didn't want to play under another Manager at the Southampton but he's not going to admit this, he probably had a chat with his Agent who probably knew that Man U wanted him, Luke has probably increased his Salary to another £80 thousand a week and I'm sure everyone remembers the rumours about Luke and Adam started about February so the seed must of been sown with Luke knowing what was going to happen at the end of the season, Adam was in the same clique and I expect the procedure to want away was identical, I firmly believe Southampton FC did not want the break up of a winning Team or the Manager to leave but without dishing up the dirt again Adam and Luke wanted to leave and nothing was going to stop them not even a Contract so we all move on hopefully with more success than last season.

OK if you say so.
Clear as a whorehouse price list mate, thanks.

I don't think anyone doubts that they wanted to leave, for their own reasons. However they have a responsibility under a contract, and a moral obligation to the Club, and to the game. You seem to be missing the point of contracts and investment in players. What happens if they all decided they wanted to leave the Club. Would you allow them all to go without too much resistance? Of course not.

I agree 100%. Some fans get impatient and emotional and find it easy to blame the board when we lost 3 players. I think they're doing an excellent in very tough times. I'm incredibly optimistic about our club's future, more so than at any time in my 50 years as Saints fan. A great manager who will take us in unchartered territory (Europe in 2 years) - we'll play even more attractive football - we'll hang on to "all" our other players (except Osvaldo) - our academy is growing even stronger which means our long-term future is not only secured but will produce even better teams.
[p][bold]Malcombe[/bold] wrote: Why is it that some Supporters in particular some poster cannot be convinced that Adam and Luke wanted to leave, Les Reed has a job that deals with the Players and he shouldn't be undermined, he probably tried to talk them into staying until he was black in the face but they wanted to leave so Les says something like we will only sell if it's good for the Club and he's right, Les has to be diplomatic when dealing with the media and has to choose his words carefully, he doesn't set out to deceive the Supporters, take Luke for example he wanted away because he was in the clique of Players under the influence of Potchettino and so he didn't want to play under another Manager at the Southampton but he's not going to admit this, he probably had a chat with his Agent who probably knew that Man U wanted him, Luke has probably increased his Salary to another £80 thousand a week and I'm sure everyone remembers the rumours about Luke and Adam started about February so the seed must of been sown with Luke knowing what was going to happen at the end of the season, Adam was in the same clique and I expect the procedure to want away was identical, I firmly believe Southampton FC did not want the break up of a winning Team or the Manager to leave but without dishing up the dirt again Adam and Luke wanted to leave and nothing was going to stop them not even a Contract so we all move on hopefully with more success than last season.[/p]
I agree 100%. Some fans get impatient and emotional and find it easy to blame the board when we lost 3 players. I think they're doing an excellent in very tough times. I'm incredibly optimistic about our club's future, more so than at any time in my 50 years as Saints fan.
He actually played very well for Newcastle after the bid and their form only crumbled after he was sold.

They had to leave some good player behind to fulfill the development squad fixtures, Cody Cropper, Omar Rowe, Jake Sinclair e.t.c. doesn't mean they are out of the loop.

Fully agree, Slugger. It was a joy to watch him last season; occasional blip, that's to be expected. Only God doesn't make mistakes - come back Terry Paine!
By the way, you learned to boil a kettle yet?

Tony Robertson, Stranraer (currently in So'ton)

You're questioning god ? .....very brave .
Could an atheist or an agnostic question God?
Man makes the mistakes..God always gets the blame.

Lol, I'll comment when I have something to say don't worry. We'll wait for the next piece of important news. I've already said what I have to say about Lovren. Enjoy being a part of the Daily Echo crew though, spending all of your time on here must be fun.
Bingo! Good night,
Good night to you too
