RUMOUR MILL, July 13 - Liverpool boss Rodgers linked with a FOURTH raid on St Mary's

Basingstoke Gazette: Jay Rodriguez Jay Rodriguez

LIVERPOOL are being linked with a FOURTH raid on Saints.

Having already signed Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana, wantaway Dejan Lovren is Brendan Rodgers’ No 1 central defensive target this summer.

Now a national newspaper today reports that Rodgers could also be weighing up a £19m swoop for Jay Rodriguez.

The England international was one of the Premier League’s top scorers before he suffered a cruel knee ligament injury at Manchester City in April.

Rodriguez’ recovery is going well, but he is not expected to be back training until October with a return to competitive action delayed until around Christmas.

Haha. I'm so looking forward to talking all three points at Anfield on the opening day of this season. The roar of celebrations in Southampton and from our away support will probably show up on the Richter Scale. Victory will taste better than anything we've tastesd in football. I'm seriously optimistic now we have Koeman in charge. To summarise, Liverpool can "do one!!"

Agreed - this is where journalists start making stuff up based on a few acts. They know Liverhampton have money to spend from the sale of Suarez, they know they need a striker to replace the one they have just lost and then they link the fact that Saints have an England striker and we've sold two players recently to the club. It's highly unlikely and I'd be amazed if the club sanctioned 2-4 players moving to a competitor club.

That said given the feeling of the Saints fans on this site it's probably not best to reprint national spoof journalism

Stupid story. If Liverpool are interested they won't want to sign him while he's recovering from a serious injury. No one knows if he'll come back as well as before. Can't see any club paying out £19m under those circumstances. Perhaps the Echo could do some of it's own journalism and find some good news stories instead of the dumb bad ones in the tabloids!

You’d think so wouldn’t you? How about Arsene Wenger signing Kim Kallstrom on loan from Spartak Moscow on deadline day last January. He injured his back a few days before in a beach game, they took a punt and it turned out he was sidelined for the first 6 weeks.
Barcelona sign a player that is banned for 4 months.

Let’s hope the rumour is b0llocks, but never underestimate the unimaginable when it comes to football. The season can’t come fast enough.

Well if there is_a grain of truth in this at least Thievingskiverpool now know what to expect from Saints. Bid £19 million and expect to pay £30mil. I would hope that JayRod would have a bit of respect for the club considering we gave him his chance and saw him through his injury. But you never know with modern day footballers. Look at the appalling_way AL treated the club that got him where he is today. Anyway apart from needing to keep Jay we are still in need of another striker as cover for him, especially if he is out till December. Young Sam didn't really look up to it last year so unless he has come on leaps and bounds we are still short up front.

Obviously pure rumourmongering. It's quite extraordinary that Liverpool hardly look beyond our club with their cheque book in hand. So here's our price list: Lovren £40m (cheap due to his poor behaviour); Morg £75m; JayRod £100m (with an add on clause: that when he is fit to play again they pay us another £100m + £10m per goal scored). We may as well add: Terry Paine £10m and Ron Davies £10m or a special offer on the pair of £25m (they'll never bother to read the small print and we may need the extra £5m to bribe their doctors at the medicals). Finally, they'll need a new manager - so RonKo £500m. So, Liverppol - have you got the message yet? Just leave us alone. Media - start reporting the facts and the good news. Saints are on the rise.

It was the Daily Mirror that reported this story following Liverpool telling Brendon Rogers that he can add all the £75m from the sale of the cannibal to the £60m he still already had left following the 3 players bought so far.
Liverpool want to increase their number of English players so, as J-Rod was one of the highest goalscores and they were impressed with our attacking play that have led to this report.
Could have some truth in it but is very unlikely while J-Rod is injured. Apart from which they are supposed to be close to signing Bony from Swansea.
Of course this is all before RonKo has said that we are not selling any more players. Result being - nothing in it.

Once we have signed our next few players and beat Liverpool on the opening game Rogers will want to buy the rest of our Squad !!

Forget it DE and do some original reporting.

Yes - sorry if I appeared somewhat disrespectful to Ron's family. I was trying to have a stab at Liverpool and make my point using a little humour! I'm in my 60s and Ron was my favourite player as a teenager. His 39 Division One goals in 1966 (from memory?) would give him a value in todays terms of £125m! Then we sold Martin Chivvers to Spurs for a world record fee of £125,000!

Have you noticed Rodgers has always got sores round his lips, do you think that comes from all the spit he generates when he's talking?
Seriously though Liverpool have been the team to hate during the closed season, and I just hope we can prevent them from beating us on day 1 of the season.
If we can retain the rest of the team and bring a couple of additional good players we will give them a run for their money ! Would be nice to wipe the smile off Lallalana's face.

Why cant Liverhampton just leave our players alone? Do they have an academy of their own or do they feel that it is not necessary when clubs like Saints have one of the best? The fact our first game is away against the player pinchers and cruise ship wannabes should really spice things up and create a great atmosphere. No hard feelings but I hope Lallana falls flat on his face in front of the Saints fans and breaks his nose ,Rickie hits a penalty over the stand, and we hammer the scousers 3-0.

We may as well add: Terry Paine £10m and Ron Davies £10m or a special offer on the pair of £25m (they'll never bother to read the small print and we may need the extra £5m to bribe their doctors at the medicals).

The media have Liverpool linked with every forward Lakaku, Bony (who according to Swansea Liverpool made an illegal approach for) Benteki, Boetelli etc etc I would think they would not come for Rodriguez no one really knows how his injury will pan out until he is back in competitive football, it was very serious. Will he have the same pace, the ability to turn quickly and tackle well? If anyone makes a move for him I cannot see it being until January. My bet that Bony and Lukaku are on their list before J Rod anyway.

We have had months of national media bull manure about ALL our best players and manager going elsewhere. To date there have been four departures. We now have a much better manager and we shall see next season the quality of our new players. Saints will buy more new players.

This is the usual journalistic lull before the new season, a time when the national media has little to report about Premiership clubs. It is a time when media stories are often invented.

I have thought of a new game that might help the national media in their time of need for stories about Saints. The game is called Spot The New "Southampton" Type Name For Other Clubs. Some Saints fans, who have better imaginations than I, have already started the ball rolling by calling Liverpool by their new name of Liverhampton. My own poor contribution is Tottonhampton Hotspur (please forgive me Totton). Can anyone else think of Southampton based names for the clubs that most take our managers and players? How about such a new name for Arsenil? All contributions will be gratefully accepted in the interest of giving Southampton a higher profile in football.
