Koeman needs time before sorting out new contracts for Jose Fonte and Jack Cork

Saints will soon make decisions over new contracts for key players such as José Fonte and Jack Cork, who are entering the final year of their current deals.

Both players are due to become free agents next summer and, as yet, have not had their long-term future resolved.

New Saints boss Ronald Koeman said it is too early in his reign to speak about his plans for the pair, but he said that new deals must, obviously, be sorted out for any important players entering the final 12 months of their contract.

“It’s a little bit too fast to have that kind of opinion. I need more time,” said Koeman, when asked if the club were offering new deals to Fonte and Cork.

“But they are important players and, always, if they will come in the last season of a contract, you have to do something at the club, and we will talk about that and we will make decisions about that.

“But it’s a little bit too early now.”

Artur Boruc, Maya Yoshida, Jos Hooiveld and Billy Sharp are other first-team players whose contracts are set to expire next summer.

Fonte has proved reliable alongside Lovren and Yoshi and I still rate Yoshi, its the Hoov that frightens the life out of me, he should be called Calamity Jane.
I would bring in another keeper, keep Boruc for another 2 years and off load Gassinga, he has had chances to prove his worth and failed.
Cork and Davis have been under rated they both work hard and gel the team together. Cork for me was one of our best midfield players last term. We still have one of the best midfield's in the premier. Only Chelsea really out played us in the middle last season. We need to try and keep what we have sign them on longer contracts and strengthen in depth. bring in a strong CB to replace Lovren who i see going
We have several midfield options if we do not lose anyone. we got a great midfield in Morgan, Vic and Jack, attack Tadic, Ramirez, Davis and Prowse.

Cork yes please Jose not sure of he made dome bad slip up last season and if we had someone stronger to challenge him I don't thing he would have made to starting line up.

On another point we as a team would love to see us as one of the top 4/6 teams, for us to be able to do this we need a 50/60k seated ground and we will need to fill to give the team the money to operate as on of the big 4/6 ?

So do anyone know of any plans to do this?

Firstly I do not want anymore disasters for our team….at the risk of being negative combined with Osprey's observations re Jesus comments (and Ospers certainly seems to call it right) I am very concerned..

..whilst everyone is hoping that Koeman is the new messiah I believe his brief is to keep us up for a future sale,

The manner we lost our manager and players, the failure to have anyone lined up in advance, the loss of our best scout and our youth set up coaches is simply NOT the way a serious club goes about things.

An open invitation to the vultures by stating we had an awkward financial situation was either stupid in the extrems or a green light to approach us.

If I am wrong and the aim is to press on then that is superb, however I do not see a concerted mission at present…too many fcuk ups…

How many weeks have we left to fill the void and what is our overall record on signings…if we lose 3 we need to sign 6 because at least 50% of all signings fail..

I agree with you the midfield is excellent and under rated, just not sure Ramirez will ever be prepared to put in the required yards like the rest of the boys.

Maybe. But whatever you think of Manure you can't dismiss the fact they're a serious club and even they got it catastrophically wrong last season.

Personally after all that's happened i'd be happy with high mid table and a cup run. Anything else is a bonus. Based on the proviso we improve the following season.

I know the whole point of this place is to allow an exchange of opinions, but really: "keeping us up for a future sale"?? Where on earth is your evidence? If the DE had published that tbey'd have had to take legal advice.

Could the person that thumbs down this comment please explain why??. Even if they do not support the club what they wrote makes sense to me, aother thumbs down then.

Jack Cork should be signed up on a 5 year contract TODAY. He very seldom lets the team down and clearly loves being a SOUTHAMPTON PLAYER. I would offer Jose a 2 year contract for i feel if we bring in another quality CB and Dejan stays then Jose would be third choice. Yosi should also be offered a new contract as cover for first choice CB's .

I would like too see Billy Sharp given a chance this season and if it dont work out let him move on in January for free for his contribution in getting us to where we are today.

You know deep down inside i am glad i was born in SOUTHAMPTON and support this crazy team we support up and down this country, never knowing what they are going to do on the day. What a ride we get compared to a MAN CITY , CHELSEA and the other top clubs, they go to the game 95% sure they are going to see thier team win and when they do it's what they expected. With my team you hope but never know and when they do win the feeling is better than watching what you expected to happen. I LOVE BEING A SAINTS FAN AND ALWAYS WILL.

Obvious I know but Cork was a stand out performer for me last season, I remember Fulham away when he came on and completely changed the game for us. He's 100% solid defensively and rarely gives the ball away I also like many others think he should be one of the first names on the starting line up definitely ahead of Wanyama and should be on a better contract plus he went to the same school as me 😊

We can't fill a 32,000 stadium right now so there is no way the owner would sanction a new one or an increase at SMS

Our fill rate was around 92% last season, only Palace, Villa and Sunderland fell below that figure.
If we were at 98/99% then it would make sense, but an average of around 2500 empty seats per game tells me it won't happen.

In fairness, Southampton FC is one of the most rule crazy difficult clubs to get a ticket for…..

..buying on matchday which I have done at several away grounds is much easier…next we are in a catch 22 situation we do not build it they cannot come most of the time…

I would work a 10.000 expansion and for all but the big 6 games do a deal within a 40 mile radius for all schools etc…we need to create the next generation of support as opposed to wait for it to come to a stadium that cannot hold it anyway.

Lowe blew this by being too timid and crap on negotiating prices, Stadium of light was built to 48000 and cost no more than St M's.

There are Plans ready in fact they are state of the Art and look very impressive, they were published in the Echo about 2/3 weeks ago, I do not know if they have been passed but I could be wrong, the proposal is to enlarge St Marys to increase the seating for another 30 thousand but there is a block on at the moment to prevent SFC going ahead, it's 2 massive rusting empty redundant Gas holders built in the 30s that are attractive to the do gooders and should stay as they are part of the landscape isn't it unbelievable?? They cannot even be used as a Children's play area it's ridiculous, I will be interested to read what fellow posters think of the preposterous idea of these insurgents.

If we were at 98/99% then it would make sense, but an average of around 2500 empty seats per game tells me it won't happen.[/p]
In fairness, Southampton FC is one of the most rule crazy difficult clubs to get a ticket for….. ..buying on matchday which I have done at several away grounds is much easier…next we are in a catch 22 situation we do not build it they cannot come most of the time… I would work a 10.000 expansion and for all but the big 6 games do a deal within a 40 mile radius for all schools etc…we need to create the next generation of support as opposed to wait for it to come to a stadium that cannot hold it anyway. Lowe blew this by being too timid and crap on negotiating prices, Stadium of light was built to 48000 and cost no more than St M's.[/p]
To be fair OT or Anfield nowadys would be cheaper to build than SMS just for the fact the area is carp therefore land is cheap cheap cheap!!!!!! ;-) NewForestStu

A new contract for Jack & Jose is not high on the agenda at the moment but expect both will be offered one by January if not before.

Priority is to sign the new players asap and get the whole squad playing RonKo's way.

As for the stadium I don't think Saints have the catchment, as large as it is, to fill a 60k one. All atmosphere would be lost in a half empty one, so a third bigger to a capacity of about 45k would be about right.

An adjacent platform by the Kingsland for local football special trains on match days would solve the additional access & parking problem.

Billy Blunt was OK in the lower leagues but not the Prem.
He helped get us back up so hope he finds another club soon, but his loans over the last two seasons have not produced a club willing to buy him.

It is the ultimate accolade for a South American to manage their national team. Pochettino may get the honour one day, but Diego Simeone is currently in line before him.

Exactly right, pack this place week in week out first, by playing scary great football and winning trophy's. Also love the idea of dedicating a stand or the stadium to Markus Liebherr.

Don't forget victor. When on form at the beginning of last season before injury he was awesome

There are a lot of negative comments above towards individual players.
Be cynical if you want, but the fact remains that some or all of these players WILL be called upon to perform for OUR club -I just don't get this **** and slagging, it must and does feedback, and then we all question loyalty -and that's a two-way street.
Time has also proven that most central defences work with an integral pairing, and this has certainly been the case with Saints, and it hasn't always been the best two (like in your playground) it's how the pairing works. I will trust Ron to have plenty of insight here.
Be assured that the club will tie up the best possible contracts for those they want to retain (or sell on?) or no lessons will have been learnt.

Time will also tell, but I think it is a bit late and naïve for Grandma to complain about those eggs the nasty Scouse wolf has stolen. I never fell for the 'give Lambo what he deserves story' -this senior player was a VERY influential leader on the field, training ground and in our dressing room, and in all managerial negotiations, the 'Club' did try and get him out previously, and I do believe our talisman was the unheralded trigger point for the mayhem that has followed his untimely departure. This episode was not treated at all delicately, and this will out in due course.
