Koeman - Saints have not set me a Premier League target

Basingstoke Gazette: Ronald Koeman Ronald Koeman

Ronald Koeman says the club have not set him a target for a league position this season.

Saints matched their Premier League best when they came home in eighth last term.

But Koeman says there are no specifics in terms of where they must finish this time round.

“No, it’s not about a place in the league,” he said.

“I think you reach your target if you work every day on the system, on the players, and the players are professionals.

“We will train hard, we will train systems, we will train football exercises, and that makes our development for this season, and if that will be eighth place, seventh, tenth, it’s not only the place, it’s what we did and how we do that and the way of playing.

“My feeling, my opinion about football, if I can bring that in that’s very important.”

We managed 8th last season with a manager and some players with half hearted commitment to the club. I embrace the new regime, and think we can equal, if not better last season's position. Mopo wanted a good finish to beef up his CV, even though he knew he was on his way.
I wouldn't be sorry if he was sacked at spuds. Sorry, its just the way I feel.

Season one - mid-table.
two - 7th place and a cup final
three - 5th place and win a cup
four - 3rd place and win a cup and euro semi final
five - runner up win a cup euro final
six - win everything for the next ten years.

Okay maybe not ten years but the rest is within our grasp - the cornflakes told me.

No target set as a league position maybe, but three things are :-
1. Maintain & show ambition to progress and at least equal or better last seasons performance.
2. To continue to play good quality attractive football.
3. To continue the flow of good young players from the academy.

Targets I am happy with.

Not sure if any of our young players (Reed, Gallagher, Targett, Isgrove, McQueen etc are ready to break through this season or next, so still need to sign some players.

My choice would be
GK - Forster or Marshall for proven experence
Then
LB - Daley Blind or
CB - Stephan De Vrij and one of the other dutch CB's if Lovren goes.
Terence Kongolo for the future maybe.
DCM - Jordy Clasie look real class to me and would give us a really strong midfield options with Captain Morgan, Wanyama, Cork, Davis, Ward Prowse, and Reed coming through. Tadic would probably play behind Pelle up front.
Winger - Scott Sinclair if McQueen of Isgrove are not ready.
Striker - Danny Ings or Connor Wickham maybe, then J-Rod back for Christmas will be like a new signing.
All promising young players worth investing in for RonKo to improve them and would really set us up for many seasons to come.
Whats more we can afford them.

Am I getting too excited !!

Personally I am not too bothered about where we finish this coming season. With all the disruption that has torn the club apart recently a period of consolidation will be needed. Too much rubbish is talked about "playing in Europe" and was used by our defectors to line their pockets. So be it. I'm just happy for now that we have an honest, no nonsense manager and wait to see what other players he signs.
