Koeman: We can sign better players than we've sold this summer

Basingstoke Gazette: Ronald Koeman Ronald Koeman

Ronald Koeman believes the club can sign better players than the ones they have lost this summer, and that a deal for Feyenoord striker Graziano Pellè is close to completion.

Saints have already sold Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw and Rickie Lambert in the past few weeks, and face a fight to keep hold of Dejan Lovren.

But Koeman has told the club’s remaining players that anyone who leaves will be replaced by someone who can, at the very least, match their contribution.

“The important message that I gave was that we will keep the philosophy, we will keep the ambition of the club, and, if we lose some players, we will bring in new players with the same qualities, or even better qualities if that is possible, and that’s important,” he said.

“I spoke to the club and there is money to spend and there is money to continue the qualities in the team, and to bring new players in.”

Koeman added: “It’s important that the rest of the players have to keep that ambition.

“I spoke to some players, some experienced players like José Fonte and Steven Davis, because they have to keep that ambition in the dressing room.

“They are happy to be players of Southampton and I promised them and I promise the fans when we start the season we have a very good team.”

Saints have already signed FC Twente playmaker Dusan Tadic – who Koeman says has very similar qualities to Lallana – and they look set to conclude a deal for Pellè in the next few days.

“It’s close but still not signed,” said Koeman of the transfer.

“We hope maybe this weekend to have him as the second new player of Southampton.”

Koeman also revealed that he did not have a chance to try and persuade either Lallana or Shaw to stay at the club, but said he was kept well informed of their situations during the process of his appointment.

“No, it was clearly finished, and I had no influence in that,” he said.

I remember saying just before Christmas that, despite my forecast of an eighth-ish position finish, I thought MoPo would bugger off to Tottenham in the summer and that, if they all got to the world cup, Adam, Rickie, Luke and Lovren would bugger off too. My stated view then was that we should try to get Ronald Koeman in (along with his brother) and then start by nicking the likes of Tadic and Pelle from the Dutch League.

I'm not going to say what I said would happen next because it would spoil the surprise.

Ron, I reckon you are going to be a top dog here at St. Mary's and you will love it, because Saints' fans are the tops.

Also, reckon many of us are now relaxed about AL and LS leaving because you have got a good transfer budget. Your experience is going to get some more good players who will give a different complexion to the team.

One note, just make sure your first team selection wins all 3 points at Anfield and we will know, for sure, that Christmas is in August this year!!

Could not agree more with these comments. Far better manager than Cortese's puppet. I also loved Koemans comments re the departed "stars" -that far better players can be bought to replace them. Joke is Alan and Luke will pay for them. I don't see Rickie as being any great loss at all. Good average player but never likely to shine in the European league and probably not again in an England shirt either. Only bought by Liverpool as a sop to get Adam as I see it. Why else would they need him. So come on lets see a spending spree as soon as possible. Don't waste time with silly opening offers.

The vibe coming out of the club now is transformed. The damning thing about yesterday was the confirmation Shaw and Lalaland didn't even bother to wait and see what was going to happen. Which basically means they weren't buying into the plan. So screw them, and any others who want to leave. We don't want you and we'll quite happily make a small fortune selling you in the knowledge we can get better in.

Without wishing to relieve myself on your bonfire I do recall saying very much the same pre season back in 2013. I also predicted the return of the stripes, the colour of the away strip and most impressively the 7-1 thrashing of Brazil by Germany. I also made a number of other predictions, some dynamite, but I am reluctant to post them now, this site is infested with plagiarists and those wishing to take credit for my insight.

Who says we don't have ambition! This is just the sort of thing we want to hear and buying these type of players proves we are just so, an ambition club. Loved Ron's press conference, no need for an interpreter. So much to look forward to especially drivilepool. 0-2. Now I wonder how a curtain player will feel if that is the score? Well, he may just be able to buy better players depending on the money he gets, but they won't be able to gel together quickly enough to improve on last year - unless he gets some of the players from the same club.

If we get into the top ten this year - it will be a tremendous year.

We will only be able to hold onto players when we are perceived as more than a family club - and to do that we need a bigger capacity stadium

We need to sell out all our home games, which we don't, then the club might think about expanding the seating capacity of St Mary's, until we do it is not going to happen.

We don't even sell out now why would making a bigger ground make a difference. We need proof of a bigger fan base to justify the 20/30 million it would cost to put an extra 15k on the current capacity

We don't even sell out now why would making a bigger ground make a difference. We need proof of a bigger fan base to justify the 20/30 million it would cost to put an extra 15k on the current capacity
Villa don't sell out all of their games - but they do sell out the big games. This means more revenue and more big match atmosphere. Considering the millions we have recently received for the 3 we have just sold, 20 million would seem to be an investment for our future.

We will never be perceived to be anything more than a bottom half of the PL with our current stadium. We need to speculate to accumulate surely?

Last season we were 12th for attendances with an average of 30212. Our lowest was 27987 and highest 31659. Sunderland were 7th in the attendance table with an average of 40117. However their lowest was below ours at 26711. When I've got time I'll do a match by match comparison. Maybe some teams only average more than us because their larger ground capacities enable them to maximise demand for certain opposing teams? Our 'range' was only just over 3500, Sunderland's a massive 20000.

Also as I've said before please don't underestimate accessibility. I know a number of people who don't go because they don't want to sit on the Avenue for hours on end to get there and get back. Not everyone wants to make a full day of it like many of us do.

WHAT we don't know - is how to get to achieve it.

You are RIGHT - lots of us like to make a day of it in the KING xxFRED
PRINCE OF WALES and J TREE etc others would like greater access to the Ground for a speedy arrival and exit.

IF THE SAINTS FANS really want this and raise the Profile on this issue - IT WILL MATERIALIZE. COYR+WS

If you dropped the price you would fill an increased capacity stadium and offered youngster in for free to catch them at an early age - it ain't rocket science.
There are towns with sizable populations within a twenty five mile radius which have no teams and yet have not seemed to be tapped for the potential 1-3k people who may be interested in joining us who currently feel no affiliation with Saints - and I cannot understand why.

Yes jls Pelle , keep up.

I would take any of their three CB's and their WC midfielder.

So with Pelle on board we are only a good LB short of where we were last season and at least 3 or 4 more to come to improve us.
A better GK, CB, a good crossing Winger and a pacy Striker.

I think we have a big enough catchment area to fill a 40,000 stadium, the problem is that young kids look to the top of the prem & champs league to see who is the best & then go on to support them instead of the local team not doing so well (this happens all over this country & I'm pretty sure others too) Lets hope we can at last buck that trend & Saints will be the team ALL young kids in Hampshire want to support. In my opinion, your silly obsession with the stripes cost you watching some of the best football the team has ever played! Your choice of course.
Have you lost the ability to smell fish? Perhaps less time correcting grammar and more time spotting the WUM's.
Not sure, there were a few posters on here when the stripes were discarded who actually said they wouldn't support the team if they lost the striped kit, that's their choice, but as I said, it cost them some great games, their loss, not ours, but welcome back to them if it really does make a difference.

Ive seen tadic on utbube and he looks great delivers a killer pass or cross and an eye for for goal..only dutch league but he has the talent...pelle scores goals there and its a skill that will count at any level a player who knowing where the back of the net it and doesnt bottle it...could turn out to be an amazing signing..still need a another striker even if he playes tadic up front with pelle there is no cover (sharp and mayuka dont think so)and chambers should be 4th choice unless he proves otherwise...id like ings coz hes local but is he any good and they will want a lot for him. Looking forward to proving the critics wrong again this year. What happened to lfc allways hasnt been on since suarez left or has he changed name again...and as for lee up the lane Spurs havent been setting the world alight maybe Potty chino thinks he is that good a manager he can make that shower successfull..sacked before end of the season ..maybe he thuoght saints stars would all follow him there and now hes stumped..i hope!

No to do that we need a bigger fan base we are a city that has a population of 280,000 and 30,000 of them are polish and half of the rest made up of Liverpool arsenal man u fans
253,000 actually. But if we had a bigger stadium we would get more fans in for the bigger games and would have more room for the occasional supporters and neutrals from say Bournemouth, Basingstoke, Fareham, IOW, Dorset, Devon etc.

We need more room to grow our fan base
We need this recent PR initiative to be extended and taken on board by more fans, and for the effort to cascade.
The loyalty of these 'neutrals' 'incomers' and 'plastics' need to be addressed. The majority are not real fans of other clubs, they "just like the colour of the shirts" or "the name sounds nice" or "I quite like the cannibal chap"- these can easily be swayed and persuaded. I'm not yet advocating punishment or beatings, but there are ways....
Some other 'outlying areas' with sizeable populations that are already considered strong outposts which are always worthy of mention include Salisbury, Winchester and Andover whilst Aldershot/ Farnham and environs can be further tapped.
Unfortunately, and being polite, the Club's board got caught sleeping during the close season- hopefully the damage is not irreparable. As good fans, we will move on.

Any of them linked with us? They do have a few cracking youngsters who would complement our side nicely.

Really getting excited now, the Koeman Saints are coming !!
Sorry mate - silly me. Ask a stupid question eh!? Made me laugh.

Let's try again then. Are there any other players we are linked with?
Only Jordy Clasie in some papers and obscure rumors about a dutch CB.
I thought Clasie and De Vrij looked really good against Brazil last night as did all their defenders, so a raid Feyenoord for these two 22yr old would be good. Also Daley Blind for LB would give RonKo an option of a back 3 or a back 4.

Sign Forster or Marshall as a proven experienced GK, plus a winger (Scott Sinclair ?) and Danny Ings as an option up front.

Whats more is, we can both afford & attract all of these players.

Hurry up Les, sign up at least two more players this week and two next week, then we are there with a better & stronger squad.

Amen to that that!!
