RUMOUR MILL, July 10 - Sunderland striker linked with Saints

Connor Wickham

SAINTS have been linked with England U21 striker Connor Wickham.

The 21-year-old Sunderland forward signed for the Black Cats for £8.1m from Ipswich three years ago.

He has only ever scored six top flight goals in three seasons for the Wearsiders - five of which came in a three-game spell towards the end of last season.

Wickham, who is out of contract next summer, netted twice in a 2-2 draw at Manchester City and in a 4-0 win over Cardiff, and was also on target in a shock 2-1 win at Chelsea in between that helped Gus Poyet's side avoid the drop.

A national newspaper report states Saints' bid to sign Ronald Koeman's former Feyenoord striker Graziano Pelle have stalled.

Saints have been chasing the Italian striker, second top scorer in the Dutch League last season, for several weeks now.

I see it too so know where you're coming from.

Not so sure on Wickham - has talent, but from memory carries a lot baggage that is unhealthy - Did he do the twitter photo using £50 notes as bog roll ?

Although he did show some excellent form in the second half of last season and his goals probably saved Sunderland.

That said it seems to me like paper talk generated by his agent to get the best out of a new contract

If he's going anywhere Spurs wouldn't upset me too much, mainly because I think they'd be dumb buying another defensive midfielder when they already have about five of them, plus we could get Dembele as part exchange, which is actually potentially a better deal for us than Spurs.

Basically, if we can screw them on it I'm more than happy, but if it isn't on our terms or if we are bullied into it, no way.

Personally I don't want to see any other players leaving full stop, but defensive midfield is probably the area where we have more than enough strength in depth to cope with a departure compared to other areas - if we can swap a quality but essentially defensive midfielder for a general midfielder who is solid and tackles but that gets forward and contributes more in the way of assists and driving runs, great, with money over.

It will take us at least 2 full years to get anywhere near where we were last season - and that is buying good players who will eventually gel together

We can only gauge the ambition of the board by the actual signings it has made, all the rest is just rumour and paper talk.
So far the two signings they actually have made,Koeman and Tadic, seem to suggest quite a lot of ambition.
Let's hope that this trend continues.

Don't get too set on any deals - the ones we celebrate and yearn to go through may end up being the next Osvaldo and the ones we're not convinced with could flourish.

To be honest, if you look at recent signings the best have, bar Lovren, been the ones people were saying were a waste of money (Boruc and J-Rod) while we all got very excited about Gaston, Osvaldo and Wanyama and are still waiting for them to convince.

FIngers crossed we get incredibly lucky in uncovering some gems and I'd be so delighted if Tadic ended up being a spectacular signing.

I'd just love to see us buy Forster and two absolute nailed on commanding centre backs though and, as boring as it sounds, if Saints can finally become a team that can afford to win games 1-0 rather than having to outscore teams I'll feel we've actually made progress.

Will miss the Poch style of play though I have to say, but if we play exciting football and it means our flair players can relax and enjoy themselves a bit more (rather than running their @rses off) all well and good.

Agreed. MoPo's insistence on playing two defensive midfielders cost us an awful lot in terms of creating chances up the other end.

Not sure I agree with that. When the full backs go forward in order to contribute by way of assists and driving runs, one of the two defensive midfielders has to move into the back line so that defence can cover the width if the pitch. Without two defensive midfielders, we would have to sacrifice the attacking ' help' of the full backs.

Basically, if we can screw them on it I'm more than happy, but if it isn't on our terms or if we are bullied into it, no way. Personally I don't want to see any other players leaving full stop, but defensive midfield is probably the area where we have more than enough strength in depth to cope with a departure compared to other areas - if we can swap a quality but essentially defensive midfielder for a general midfielder who is solid and tackles but that gets forward and contributes more in the way of assists and driving runs, great, with money over.[/p]
Agreed. MoPo's insistence on playing two defensive midfielders cost us an awful lot in terms of creating chances up the other end.[/p]
Rising_Son

I actually think there will be one or two surprises in who saints sign but at the moment we have a lot of money so alsorts of stories are getting written throw a coin and take your choice.
milton road,

According to the Daily Echo's article, tomorrow is already happening, so I hope I am not being too premature in anticipating the possibility that in Ronald Koeman's scheduled July 11th press conference, he will announce his second acquisition for Saints . . . . . . . Graziano Pelle.

I am not in the least surprised that the Daily Echo doesn't know which day it is, as there have lately been a few players deserting St. Marys and many more bull manure, negative rumours in the national media about more players leaving Saints. I appreciate that, unlike much of the national media, the Echo is fully publishing news about player arrivals. Perhaps the Daily Echo's sports reporters might wish to find out if the players who have left Saints share the same agent. I remain optimistic about Saints, but can't help being suspicious more than anything else of agent opportunism.

milton road, you could well be correct that Saints might surprise us with one or two of their new signings. As I have already mentioned, perhaps Ron will tell us of a second new Saints player during his press conference, whenever July 11th might be! I am so looking forward to the score improving to Saints 3 (Koeman, Tadic, A.N. Other) : Neggie Veggies 4 (Pochettino, Lambert, Shaw, Lallana). We're not even yet at half time in the close season! Lol!

Onward and upward, the Southampton Way, is the only way to go at the south coast's city of football!!!

Not so sure on Wickham - has talent, but from memory carries a lot baggage that is unhealthy - Did he do the twitter photo using £50 notes as bog roll ?
No, That's the West Brom Centre Back i believe you're thinking off! Unless he's done so as well. Apologise if wrong! But he'd be a no for me. He should stayed with Ipswich

That was Bardsley, but agree he carries too much baggage to risk us making him a Saint. Too much of a sinner for my liking.
Thanks for the correction and happy birthday to SVR

Prefer to see us concentrating on getting that young French lad in. Unless this young man changes his whole MO around we have another Osvaldo in the making here.

Ings is a safer bet.

IOAD,

The Daily Echo updated the title of their article (above) at 2.30 p.m. The original title this morning was: "RUMOUR MILL, July 11 - Sunderland striker linked with Saints." It is a shame that such an amusing human error didn't remain unamended, as it makes many of the comments on this thread from Saints fans seem a bit daft. The Daily Echo's article definitely got today's date wrong and we fans got it right!!! Lol!

The actual fact is this is just speculation. There is nothing to suggest we are actually chasing him at all.
