RUMOUR MILL, July 4 - Saints linked with QPR target Caulker

Basingstoke Gazette: Steven Caulker, right, in action for Cardiff at St Mary's last season Steven Caulker, right, in action for Cardiff at St Mary's last season

QPR are have agreed a fee with Cardiff for Steven Caulker, who has been linked with Saints.

Former Tottenham centre-back Caulker, rated at some £8million, is a target for the newly-promoted Hoops, but the Cardiff captain, 22, is also attracting interest from the likes of Liverpool, Everton and Saints.

New boss Ronald Koeman could be in the market for a new centre half if wantaway defender DEjan Lovren joins the St Mary's exodus to Anfield.

The only back-up centre halves to last season's regular pairing of Lovren and Jose Fonte are Jos Hooiveld and Maya Yoshida, neither of whom have consistently impressed in the Premier League.

QPR boss Harry Redknapp said of Caulker: We've agreed a fee with Cardiff and it's now up to Steven to decide his next move.

"I know him well from Spurs and he's always been a tremendous prospect. Hopefully that's another one we can get done."

Many on here have spoken well of Caulker. It seems perhaps we might be getting our finger out at last.

We are only a few days into the window, but whilst quick to get rid, it is time to get out of the blocks and sign a few. We could miss out if the club does not get it all started. Sign one and others will follow.

Could be a good signing if we havnt left it too late, I understand we've been linked with Vlaar at Villa & Van Dijk at Celtic, get rid of Loveren as the last thing we need is more disruption in the squad, if we can get £20m for him we could probably buy these 3 for that amount maybe a touch more.
I feel we need to put a marker down in the transfer market and make a couple of really good signings to settle everyone down, once we see some new, hopefully better, signings come in, we can look forward to the new season with renewed optimism.

I can virtually guarantee that the £20m being quoted is pie in the sky. The figures quoted by the media are always massively inflated. Its more exiting and helps soften people to the idea of a move. If he goes to Liverpool, I reckon it will be 15m rising to 17 max.

My view is at some point Liverpool and Lovren need to be told to do-one

I'm much more preferring the vibe today (or tonight here). Let the want aways go. If any player especially a fellow CB in Lovren doesn't see the huge benefit in playing under RoKo then their loss. But as others have said no more exits until some serious incomings arrive some intent needs to be demonstrated. Caulker would be a good shout if for no other reason than sticking it up Saggy.

If we can sell Lovren or any disinterested players to foreign clubs, that will be even better, do not strengthen our competitors for CL.
We are the mercy of bigger clubs like MU, Liverpool ( looked like a Saints team now if Lovren joins them) but on the other hand, we must also be the mercy team to other smaller clubs. We should buy their best players too at much lower prices as we offer realistic route for these good players to EL or CL in future. No point crying over losing our players to bigger clubs, just squeeze them for a high price and there is no guarantee they can do better at these clubs. We have many exciting young players coming thru, JWP should be more adventurous with his fantastic kicks , Chambers can do better in midfield if he cant dislodge Clynde and I saw glimpses of Scholes in Harrison Reed. waiting for Matt to debut this season at LB and show Shaw we can produce fantastic LB after LB.

If Liverpool can play hard ball on the price they will sell Suarez, why can't we do the same for the want- away ones were supposedly have. Lovren is under contract. If he breaks it, then why should the club be held to any terms agreed within it such as a release clause? If we do agree to sell him, it should only be to a club outside the EPL.

We needed one top quality CB with Lovern, so we will need two if he goes.
We will miss out on Caulker if we don't act today. Also the dutch (Feyenoord) CB's look good to me.
We must only buy quality young players not average & older ones like Rupert Lowe used to do.

Time to announce the new arrivals, or maybe they are reluctant to come as they see our board selling all our top players, big mistake Les & Ralph you should have bought first. I fear that RonKo will only get £30m to spend unless sales Osvaldo and maybe Lovren.

Please no more sales especially to other Premiership clubs, need to keep the rest although Lovern looks to be forcing the issue like Osvaldo.

Must keep Morgan & make him captain but if we don't sign two or three top quality players before he comes back from the World Cup otherwise he will insist on going and I would not blame him.

We have not signed anyone yet, not even to replace the three we have sold. We know that we needed at leased 4 top quality additions to add to last seasons squad, so that is now 7 that are required, or 8 if Lovern leaves.

Can't see us doing it so despite what the board have said and even with the Koeman Bros we will have to accept that we will not be pushing forward next season.

Time also for RonKo to speak to us.

If I were a betting man I'd say Caulker is going to 'Arry's arms as they are well acquainted already and QPR have the money.

I like the sound of Vlaar if he's available. Also reckon we are going to get one of the Feyenoord CB's
De Vrijs is being hunted by Manure - it would be nice if he were interested in us but Manure have to be favourites.

Rambo will know by now who he wants and will be teaming up with Les to see who we can afford and who we can't and then Les will zero in on 'em.

Best season ever awaits us Gentlemen.

It doesn't matter how much we have or what facilities we have if he decides to go to QPR and he has worked for 'Arry before and that might swing the deal especially as they are at the offering terms stage. And they do have the money to buy him. Are we struggling with the English language?

Maybe Rambo has a different opinion of him or has his own irons in the first - who knows for sure. It just seems this is one that might get away from us.

According to Sky Liverpool have had an 18 million bid rejected by Saints for Lovren. I hate to say it but Rodgers buying Lambert was a clever move, he was seen as a leader and inspirational character and friend to all at Saints.
I wonder if his influence persuaded Lallana and unsettled Lovren. Before the world cup Lovren was content to stay.
Morgan is attracting a lot of European interest now as well as domestic. The only way we can settle players down is by buying quality in and showing ambition. Our close season has been unsettled but we are now 6 weeks behind everyone on the transfer front. Whilst it may have been politic not to move on transfers until the manager was in surely a list of likely and interested candidates ws drawn up ready for fast moving when Koeman came in. Surely he must of put names forward when he was interviewed as well. We now have around 4 weeks to put a team together and need at least 6-8 players
The comment on Yoshida is unfair he was absent during the majority of Saints poor run in the start of the first season and his coming into the side stabilised it and he played for most fo the rest of the season where we conceeded 32 goals in 28 games which is better than the last season's goals against for the last 28 games. Whether Lovren stays or goes we need another centre back and we need two left backs we have no cover there. We need at least 2 up front whether Osvaldo goes or stays. We need two players in to cover midfield and another quality keeper just an opinion.

I think we as a club need to have tougher terms and conditions in the players contracts. Perhaps along the lines of if you want to leave before your contract has run you can only be sold to a club outside the premier league. Better still upon signing a contract it should read. I as a Saints player promise to be loyal to Saints for as long as my contract runs and to play with all my heart for as lobg as im contracted as a SAINTS player. I also understand that if I dont honour my contract that I give full permission to Saints to fine me 75% of my wages for as long as I play for another club. That should keep the money grabbing bar stewards from leaving. COYR

I also understand that if I dont honour my contract that I give full permission to Saints to fine me 75% of my wages for as long as I play for another club. That should keep the money grabbing bar stewards from leaving. COYR Bazultra

Trouble is contracts today have to be 'seen to be scrupulously fair' wonderful income for lawyers (who are the most represented branch of Mp's and Hof L) gravy train allowing for continuous interpretation and resultant fee's.

Nonetheless a contract can be drafted on the basis that wages are say 20k and the club will pay and additional loyalty 20k per week at the end of the contract or reclaimable if their are no breaches of loyalty..
..such breaches would be….agent or player demanding a move, placing a transfer request, commenting publicly and negaitvely against the club etc…

The key is to pay high wages in 2 parts..work and LOYALTY.

Agreed, what a joke we are. Why the club ever mentioned champions league footy being a target I don't know. Clearly it was another complete lie, one they sold the players and the fans. If we only sign 2 or 3 average players for less money Luke went for it would not surprise me. I don't see how we can keep Lovren and Morgan if they want to go, what about Jrod at Xmas maybe he will have his head turned to? The board need to act before the fans start turning.

Just heard that Steven Caulker is expected to have a medical at QPR this weekend so we must now move quickly to get him. At £8m for a future England CB & captain is a bargain.

What has happened to Tadic & Pelle they should have been signed by now.

Morgan will be back from the World Cup soon and will look at whats left of the squad and decide he best leave along with Lovren and I don't blame him. We have still not signed anyone yet to replace the ones who have left never mind the additional four that we needed to add.

We really need to keep Morgan (as captain ?) but fear we will not be able to sign the 7 or 8 top players that are now needed.

That would certainly make the player think twice. Sticks and carrots I like it.

Zero Hours contracts are the thing, no play = no pay.

Yes money is a big part but I do believe that it is also the players AMBITIONS that is making them want to move on.

Over half our squad proved last season that they are good enough to play in the CL. Cortese knew it and got them all to sign long contracts on the promise of it. The main reason they are all wanting to leave is not money but to fulfill their ambitions now that they realize they can not do that at the Saints.

The board should have said no to all other clubs approaching Adam & Luke and kept them to their contracts, they didn't and were prepared to listen to high offers which sent the wrong signal. Hope I am wrong but expect Morgan will join Lovren and ask for a transfer.

Agree with all the posts. We need to get the new players in as otherwise we will have a lousy start to the new season like we did 2012/13.
Besides that if we get some good signings completed it will start restoring views on the clubs ambition and will help attract other new players.

Caulker and Marshall played as the two mainstays for a defence that got relegated.
If you bring in players who are used to losing there is a very good chance that they will continue to play as losers.
Spurs thought that they had a good deal when they sold Caulker, and they don't appear to want him back.
Look elsewhere for these two very important positions.

if this was a genuine bid then we as fans should be extremely worried.
Cardiff?
for Fonte?
at the moment he is probably our best cb as we can not be certain that Lovren will stay.
The media do drop an awful lot of rubbish in amongst the real stories and I hope that is just that, some rubbish filler.
I certainly do not think that Jose will take it very seriously, he stayed and fought for his place last season when he looked doomed and turned in quite a good season.
