Fine times for Lovren

Dejan Lovren

Dejan Lovren faces the prospect of a fine from Saints if he does not return on time for pre-season training.

As reported in yesterday’s Daily Echo, the centre-half is considering not reporting back for duty, as he looks to secure a move away from the club.

Lovren, a target for Liverpool who is also rumoured to be attracting interest from Tottenham, has already submitted a transfer request, and sources close to the player have confirmed his current stance is that he does not intend to come back.

There is still another two weeks or so until the 24-year-old is due at St Mary’s, as he is given extra time off because of his involvement with Croatia in the World Cup.

Whether, if push comes to shove, he follows through with the threat remains to be seen, but the indications right now are that he is not planning to appear, in the hope that he can force the club’s hand.

If he is still a Saints player at that time and he does not report back, he will be fined.

Lovren is said to be frustrated that the project he was supposedly told about last summer, when he signed in an £8.5m deal from Lyon, has “completely changed”.

The Echo has been told that Lovren’s ambition is to play Champions League football and that he does not feel that will be possible at Saints any longer.

He is also said to be upset that Saints knocked back an approach from Liverpool, claimed to be around the £20m mark, when he and his representatives thought an agreement was in place that he would be allowed to leave for that amount.

The defender has another three years left on his current deal at St Mary’s.

Saints apparently now have no ambition, according to Dejan Lovren's reported understanding. That opinion makes no sense because of the appointment of Ronald Koeman as manager. Surely Dejan and his agent must have heard of Ron!

Fine him the maximum. It's time for the club to make a stand now. Make a statement that no further players will be leaving whether they wish to or not with the exception of the players we would like to move on. IE dopey Dani and maybe Hoover.

I don't believe the excuse that he wants to play champions league football, because I am sure that Lyon were in the CL when he left them to join saints. I think he has been offered a bigger wage packet by someone.

I thought the offer was around £15 million. If he thinks there is a willingness to pay £20 million, well tell them £25-30 million would tempt us.

Again, if a player has lost his Saints' ambition I reckon we will not win the argument and probably we do not want to. Anyhow, he has blotted his copybook for most, I would think.

But, justaSaintsfan is right, has Dejan not heard of Ronald Koeman?

Everybody wants instant Champions League football. Simple maths would tell you there aren't enough places in CL squads to go around. Could always try Gibraltar's Lincoln Red Imps though. They've already started their CL campaign against a team from the Faroe Islands.

Seriously, UEFA/FIFA should introduce a rule that prevents players from playing in Europe (Europa League included) if they were not a member of the squad that qualified for it. Players would think twice about who to sign for then – no jumping across to Liverpool when they make it, 12 months after turning them down because they only finished 7th the year before (as an example).

All these Saints fans piping up about Lallana, Shaw and Lovren, and Pochettino are pathetic. Whinging like kids because they said they forced transfers and showed no loyalty!!! Really, face facts Saints are a selling club, and will never win anything more than perhaps the league cup. Liverpool, Spurs and Man U are much bigger, more ambitious clubs. Yes they are getting more wages, but if the board cant match the players ambitions why should they stay. Anyone that plans to boo Lallana is a childish brat. Get ur head out of ur **** and face reality.

Two months ago we had a solid squad with players that were respected, loved and adored by us fans... then MoPo leaves and some are running for the best paychecks. I could live with Rickie going, I could understand losing Luke, I can just about stomach Lallana going (he could have shown more respect) but we have to shut the gates before the Lovrens, J-Rods and Schneiderlins gallop off to new pastures.

We are selling and making our competitors stronger... not many businesses would do that.

Time to roll out Fat Les.

If he doesn't behave himself then fine him and for the love of God don't sell him. If he doesn't toe the line he can not play and he'll end up rusting, he'll be destroying his own career. He really is the best player we have, but he shouldn't be allowed to leave now on principal.

Let's put down a marker and send a message out to future SFC players that we are not going to be held to ransom and used as a stepping stone.

Yeah cos Spurs are massive aren't they....
Unfortunately bigger than Saints! Spent £110m last year, yes some was from Bale sale. They have genuine ambitions to break into the top 4, ive not heard the saints board say that! They've won far more trophies than Saints, bigger stadium, bigger fan base...and our manager, and best player for years (Bale) went there! So yes, they are massive, compared to Saints amyway

Do some of you idiots above really think that the club should let the whole world know in advance what their targetted players are. When I bid for work I certainly don't call all my competitors and let them know what my plans are!
Koeman has only just got here, the last thing we need is panic buys. Put your trust in him and the board and see what happens before you start the whinging.
Also, if a player really want's to force a move away then you seriously wouldn't want that player in our colours on the pitch and not giving 100%.

SAINTS FANS WILL NOT FORGIVE OR FORGET EASILY THE EVENTS OF THE PAST FEW DAYS.

Good idea, and would bring some sanity to this crazy merry- go- round.

We should only hear twice a year from the Chairman or the back seat boys. Once at the beginning of the season and again at the end.

No manager wants his chairman mouthing off all over the world as and when he sees fit.

The chairman makes sure we don't run out of toilet paper etc.

The manager and his assistant and on matter financial Les (and then rarely) those are the only ones we need to hear from.

The small films on FB are all pinky, rosy, cuddly and nice and necessary.

I'm guessing we will hear Rambo often enough after each win and the occasional away draw.

Best season ever remember - it is a mantra - get to it.

I have questions that perhaps you can help.Have I had my head in the sand for 2 years with cloth in my ears or has this been happening WHATS THAT? Since the Club got promotion in 2012 into the Premiership the progress has been steadily climbing 1st season back 14th, 2nd season back 8th and best ever finish to date since the Premiership was formed and I've been told before the end of last season there was much talk about achieving CLF (ignore the conspiracies and misery and Player power) and progressing of onwards and upwards and all the Players were on board as to be expected so what can you tell me has changed the ambitions there of the Club? The ex Manager who fooled everyone had the same mindset even if he is an insincere man over many things, he left and some players wanted to leave and have gone and there are others who has been rumoured also want to leave not because the Club wanted them to leave because if the Club did want them to leave they wouldn't of sat with those Players and watched them sign long Contracts.

Move on Ronald Koeman is appointed Team Manager, who is Ronald Koeman you may ask? oh he's only got 70 odd caps for Holland and known throughout the world of Football yea so ah but when he retired as a Player at Barcelona he becomes a Coach of the Team along with Jose the Special one and Johan Cruyff, so do you think he would of learnt much? he then moves with a fantastic CV not only from Barcelona the Club but the Coaches who would recommend his skills, he then shows his metal by Managing other Clubs and the most recent Fyernoord ( is that spelt correctly) where he achieved the best finish in the Dutch League the Club had ever finished, has it hit a cord with you yet? He is then covertly approached by Southampton who have sold him there ambitions, they want be struggling to stay out of the bottom 4 want to sell the Players who are worth millions and do not care if the the Club is relegated having appointed an experienced and successful man where ever he has Coached/ Managed ex International Footballer Ronald Koeman who hasn't any ambitions just wants to pick up a few million in a year and throw in that the Club spent £30 million on a state of the Art Training Centre , is this downwards is that how you see the Clubs ambitions and direction? Is it normal that when a project is moving upwards and progressing it has reached it's maximum and now start recoiling because it's gone far enough?
Please can you help me with these questions because with my head in the sand and cloth in my ears I've only been told all this, I sincerely look forward to your help and I will thank you in advance

Unfortunately you have to agree with Lovren in that realistically Saints do not look likely to push on for Champions League qualification next season and because of this we will be lucky to keep Morgan.

We all know that we needed 4 top quality players to add to last seasons squad as it was. We now need at least 8 top quality players if no-one else leaves. Not all of these will make it in the Premiership and RonKo has to get them to play as a team.

Best we sign the new players quickly, Tadic, Pelle, etc
Looks like we have been too slow and will loose out on Caulker.

As yet we have not signed any players at all but seem to be busy selling or trying not to sale our other players.

No way will we get 8 high quality (not average) players so lets keep our feet on the ground next season and hopefully avoid a relegation battle.

If we don't have a settled team & hit the ground running for our easy start to the first 12 games then we will really struggle next season. Therefore lets not put to much pressure on them to soon, we ALL have to accept that we have to take a step back before we can push on.

Just my conclusions and opinion and Im not a big Cortese fan.

Why did Cortese leave? He was not forced out he was in fact begged to stay and he would have been well rewarded for doing so.
He realised that unless there was a lot more money invested in Southampton that the team would never move on to the next level and the CL dream could not be achieved.
He was the one that sold the top four BPL and CL dream to the players when they signed their contracts and they bought into all that.
When he left Saints he let the staff know that this is as far as you can get to that dream here, if you want to still chase that dream then you will have to move on becase it won't happen with Saints, bye.
The old 5 year plan was completed and no one has bought into the new plan, or selling the new plan with any conviction to the players to make them think their dream is still alive.
Lallana, Lamber, Shaw, Spiderman, Lovren are not all terrible people.
The players were sold the dream, now they think they have to move on for it to come true and no one is convincing them otherwise.

Cortese said when you sell your best young players you are selling your ambition, well we are well and truly selling our ambition and our players with CL ambitions now want out. I don't like it, I hate it but I can't think that there is any other reason for them all wanting to go.

Why is the Premier League not investigating Liverpool's underhand tactics, we should NEVER entertain business with them again.

Just like Norwich did last year. Lots of early signings. Quite a few on here were sounding the alarm bells at our lack of action in the transfer market, just like you are now.

Yes they are getting more wages, but if the board cant match the players ambitions why should they stay. Anyone that plans to boo Lallana is a childish brat. No offence mc_kni but if we need to get "our heads out of ****" as you so eloquently put it, maybe you should do the same. You could start with replacing Spurs with Arsenal in your list of "bigger and more ambitious clubs". Spurs won't win anything in the current era as they're not in the same financial league as Man U, Man C and Chelsea and are streets behind the potential of Liverpool (formerly Southampton FC) and Arsenal (also formerly Southampton FC). When you did have some serious cash from the Bale sale you wasted it spectacularly on a load of forgettable players. You were like a 6 year old in a penny sweet store with a sugar rush and a £10 note. What's more you have a manager who thinks he can turn you into something he can't overnight (i.e. a top 4 team) and he will inevitably get a P45 instead went reality sinks in and Levy does his thing. I promise I'll stop "whinging" when you and the rest of your fickle fans do the same. Until then stick to your own website and stop making yourself look foolish.

We don't have the money.

It all comes down to Saints not having the money.

We cant get it from anything other than the owners or the CL our fan base is not big enough.

Cortese left because there was not enough money for the next big step up from where we are. We can maybe pay Osvaldo £65k a week but thats it. Like it or not our club is too small to generate the cash required to pay the massive wages of players with CL ambitions without being in the CL.
Shaw has gone to a club that can pay one player over £300k a week!

We can fine him but in the end he'll get his move and if he does play for us in between we can hardly rely on him to reproduce the barnstorming performances of last season. His claim that the club lack ambition is just a screen to hide the same motives as all the others - there is no appetite for being part of developing success; players like Lovren who believe in their own myth would rather walkaway and have it easy with an already successful club. So we need a left back, a midfielder, and a striker - all of which we will get. And lest we forget we can still pick a midfield from JWP, JC, SD, GR, MS, and WY. At least for now and I am holding on to the view that MS has far more integrity than the ones who already left and will be playing for us at least until Jan.

FANS could not go through watching Rabbit in the Headlights Gazza or Awlfully Slow to react Kelv in goal again for SFC. When ARTUR gets injured - we need a ready made replacement and to play in both Cup Competitions.

RESPECT kelv for his loyalty.

Dream on. Spurs will achieve zippo next season just like all the other seasons. Besides that with your track record you will be looking for another manager come Christmas.

Part of me says, bu@@er off if you don't want to play for Saints any more.

Part of me says make the sh*t suffer. We hold his registration and he is contracted to us. If he doesn't play for us he doesn't play, end of. Let him rot on the sidelines - he'll soon change his attitude.

Nobody is bigger than the club.

Liverpool pushing for this deal. The price is 25 million with a10% sell on take it or leave it I'm sure he will jump ship once Liverpool fail to make champions league next year. He will probably use the same excuses then as well the teams ambition has changed.
I personally can see a bidding war coming on decent defenders at this good age are short in numbers right now.

"He is also said to be upset that Saints knocked back an approach from Liverpool, claimed to be around the £20m mark, when he and his representatives thought an agreement was in place that he would be allowed to leave for that amount."

So.... Liverpool just happen to submit an offer for the amount that Lovren believes would activate a release clause? That is quite a co-incidence!

Or more likely, Lovren has been tapped up by Liverpool and Lovren has told them he has a minimum release clause of around £20m, hence trying to force a move.

The FA should investigate this, or Saints should at least refer it to the FA requesting them to look into it! However, I'm delighted our "little club" is taking a stance on this one against the bigger bully boys.

This illustrates that two main things are spoiling the beautiful game for most fans....greedy agents leeching off players by turning their minds and ambitions and clubs bloated with cash from huge borrowing against future successes. We know which clubs these are and frankly, if and when they fail like MUFC this year, I for one am delighted.

Lovren is a relatively young man who has had his head turned, probably by an agent, who has told him he is a better than he really is and so he should play for a CL team.

Sorry, son, but you have a contract that says SFC are entitled to your services and will continue to do so whist it is in the interest of the club to keep you. End of!
