ODIHAM’S Ryan Golesworthy has been selected to play for Hampshire and Isle of Wight in the AEGON Summer County Cup under-12 event next month at Bromley.

This event sees some of Britain’s best players take to the tennis court to represent their counties.

Golesworthy booked his place on the team after taking part in trials at Kingsley Tennis Centre in Bordon.

There were four places up for grabs and the players were taken through a range of challenging activities and competitive point play.

The 12-year-old Robert May’s pupil will be playing as number one seed for Hamp-shire at the event, which will see 44 counties organised into groups on a regional basis, with winning teams progress-ing to a final stage.

Hampshire will face Dorset, Surrey, Sussex, Kent and the Channel Islands.

Each match will consist of three singles and one doubles.

Golesworthy is looking forward to the event and said: “The level at County Cup is always high and there are quality players who battle hard for their counties. It’s a great event to be involved in.”

Team coach Colin Jakeway, from Kingsley Tennis Centre, said: “We have a solid team this year with quality and depth throughout the team.

“I’m hoping the boys will follow the girls’ under-14 and under-10 teams into the national finals. It is definitely within their grasp and is a goal for the team.”

Golesworthy is part of the Hampshire Talented Athlete Scheme, which is funded by Hampshire County Council and co-ordinated by Sport Hampshire and Isle of Wight.

The programme provides grants and support services to help Hampshire’s most talented athletes reach world-class podiums.
