BASINGSTOKE golfer Stuart Archibald will compete for a spot at The Open tomorrow.

The Worting man will travel to Hillside, in Southport, Lancashire, after getting the call to play in Final Qualifying, playing two rounds tomorrow in an attempt to reach the main event at Royal Liverpool.

Archibald was 19th reserve after losing out on an automatic spot in a play-off at the end of Regional Qualifying, but he got the call to play yesterday.

However, he will have to play some of the best golf of his life in order to reach The Open, with 72 golfers competing for just three spots at Hoylake.

Among those competing against Archibald at Hillside will be three-time major champion Vijay Singh and Yorkshire’s Matthew Fitzpatrick, last year’s US Amateur Champion.

The 30-year-old will get his first round under way from the 10th tee at 8.05am, with his second round due to begin at 1.35pm.

Archibald was in EuroPro Tour action at Frilford Heath, in Oxfordshire, last week, finishing in a tie for 22nd at The Buildbase Open.

He got off to a great start, a bogey-free round of 68 (-4) putting him in contention, but he fell away on the second day, shooting a one-over-par round of 73. A third round of 71 (-1) left him four-under-par for the event, eight shots behind the winner, and he sits 34th on the EuroPro Tour order of merit.
