Saints to bank £50m?

Basingstoke Gazette: Saints to bank £50m? Saints to bank £50m?

Saints are set to rake in almost £50m in the space of a few days as star players Luke Shaw and Adam Lallana leave the club.

Shaw’s long awaited transfer to Manchester United has been confirmed for a fee believed to be £27m with add-ons that could take it to £31m.

Lallana’s switch to Liverpool is in advanced stages and is most likely to be announced on Monday.

The Saints skipper has undergone a medical at Liverpool and a fee of around £25m has been agreed between the clubs, with Bournemouth set to receive £6.25m for their 25 per cent sell-on clause inserted into the deal which took Lallana to Saints as a 12-year-old. Saints will bank around £18.25m but with the potential for that to increase with add-ons.

Saints fans had braced themselves for worst, with the Daily Echo having revealed some weeks ago that both Shaw and Lallana had told the club they wished to leave this summer.

But it means the team that did so well last season, achieving an eighth placed Premier League finish, have now lost Rickie Lambert, Shaw, Lallana and manager Mauricio Pochettino. Dejan Lovren is expected to follow them out of the St Mary’s exit door after handing in a formal transfer request.

The biggest relief for the club’s supporters will be the stabilising effect of new boss Ronald Koeman, who reports for duty at the new look Staplewood training ground at the beginning of next week as some of the squad return for pre-season training.

The Daily Echo understands the Dutch manager is already trying to pull together potential signings.

With so many star players departing, and potentially more yet to leave, Koeman will certainly need to hit the ground running to have a fit and firing squad ready for the big kick-off at Anfield.

Shaw’s move is not only the most money Saints have ever received for a player, but also makes him the most expensive teenager in world football history.

The 18-year-old has signed a four-year contract at Old Trafford with the option of a further year.

Saints’ executive director, Les Reed, who is overseeing football matters, and who said before the end of last season that he was confident of keeping the squad and the manager together, again stressed that all the money raised will be reinvested into the squad.

“While we are sad to see Luke depart the club, we fought to ensure that we got the right deal for a player in whom we have invested a great deal of work over the past decade,” he said in an official club statement.

“Luke joined us at the age of eight, and our academy staff and coaches have helped him to progress into a top-class player. He will leave our club and carry forward our top-class pedigree, as others have done before.

“This deal is a good one for Southampton Football Club, and hopefully sends a clear message to other clubs wishing to bid for our players.

“Luke’s transfer fee will be reinvested into the team as our new manager, Ronald Koeman, builds for the new season and for years to come.”

Saints chief executive, Gareth Rogers, added: “Luke's world-record transfer to Manchester United is yet another endorsement of the great work undertaken at our academy and by the staff at Southampton Football Club. “We can now move forward and continue to invest in the future of our club.”

It will probably be around £100m by the time ""Saints Spectacular Summer Sale"" is over.

But we will get better replacements I hear you shout.... er no! to replace Shaw would cost £30m and £100,000+ per week and to replace Lallana would cost £26m and 80,000 /wk. etc...etc....

If, as predicted we lose another 2/3 players and I am talking players who are regular 1st choice here, we will need a total of 6 newbies which will, effectively turn our side into a team of strangers.

Koeman will have just 6 weeks pre-season to mould a team ready for the start, if he achieves this then he would become an instant football genius.

History tells us that it will not work. Time will tell.

A well balanced argument with which I couldn't agree more. saints. Fans need to start looking ahead and have faith in the manager who is a big name and who surely wouldn't have come to SFC if he wasn't going to get investment.

In terms of the departures I think we'll arguably miss Shaw the most as he was one of the key players to come in for a struggling Danny Fox and slowly turned us in to a club that could compete in the PL. However we've got a good fee for him and if we can get someone like Nathanial Clyne but with a left foot perhaps from outside the PL then we can march on.

AL is also a big loss but we may be better served by replacing him with a pacey wide player and a proper No. 10 to come in for Lambert and play behind a fit again Rodriguez and that may yet be gaston Ramirez of he stays fit and focused. Ideally we need a stand-by No. 9 for Jay Rod and looks like Ronald could have a lead or two there.

Finally at centre back and standby GK? Well we needed to strengthen in those areas anyway from last season so the departing players have not changed that. If Lovren stays then we should be ok if Fonte can repeat his form last year, if not then we need to potentially bring in 2 central defenders.

Plenty of work to do then but all should be positive provided the income from shaw et al is fully reinvested!!

You do not have to spend mega money in order to replace the likes of Shaw and Lallana, we only spent a million on Lambert, and peanuts on Lallana and Shaw came from the academy, there are plenty of quality bargains out there, not just in the English leagues but throughout the world, hopefully RoKo has good connections and contacts and will be able to bring in some top quality players without the need to pay over the odds, Dani Osvaldo, I'm looking at you.

50 million pounds that's fantastic and after what we saw last year from Spurs lots of money means lots more success. Not!!!!
What we saw from Spurs is losing 1 player, gaining milions and buying many doesn't win you anymore. In fact all it does from what I have seen is make you a worst team.
Hay ho I will still support only from the comfort of my armchair. Big money and the so called Big clubs are damaging the national team and to be honest I can't see them doing much for Southampton FC either.

Lets look at this logically....Lallana wouldn't have played at his best if he had to stay at Saints, so that would have had a detrimental effect on the team spirit. We can now get some decent Dutch players in the team. We may be better for it in the long run.. if Lovren wants to go, then let him.....We will make a healthy profit from the sale. Contracts are not worth anything anymore. Adam could have gone years ago, but didn't...let him go now, with our best wishes and profound thanks.

I don't agree with your maths, you can buy a decent left back for about £10m, we also have Matt Taggert who plays at left back,as for Lallana we already have a replacement Gaston, throw in a couple of signings i.e. Pelle and Ings a goalkeeper and another centerback and happy days COYR.

I have two thoughts regarding what should happen once we get through the transfer window period

a) the entire board in particular Les Reed should fall on their swords and resign in recognition of the terrible job they have and are doing in running the club. They are clueless and are only interested in bringing in money and in my opinion are showing in their inaction in strengthening the club that they have nothing but contempt for us as fans and the club.

What they are failing to see and realise is it took 5 years to get us to where we were in May last year selling the heart of our team will in my opinion inevitably lead to a relegation fight. Whilst on paper having 50million in Katarina's bank account looks great it doesn't leave the 25000+ people that love Saints with much of a team.

People on this site keep on saying "trust the board" or "why are you blaming the board" well trust is earnt and apart from appointing a manager the board seem to be prouder about getting new floodlights than they do in strengthening the club. This is way I firmly believe they should all resign.

b) Liebherr should release a statement explaining her thoughts and part in this debacle

Problem we will have if these alleged transfers all take place, is we will be buying replacements and not supplementing the squad for more "strength in depth" - the problem we had last year

You make some valid points, however should we not just wait 7-10 days to let Ronko actually start work and see what that brings.

I don't think for one minute that while on holiday he has just sat around the pool drinking cocktails without making a few calls here and there.

If nothing seems to have happened after this period, then I think we all have the right to get rather anxious.

Whats the point in having a great accademy and ambition as we get close to the promise land and about 3/4 players of Champions League the teams already in there rob us blind of our tallent (I know utd are not in it next season but they have last seasons £50m revenue). At least RK will have his own squad next season. He can put his own personality on our team. Just want to thank all those loyal players who have stayed at the club. We know how those (not to be mentioned by name) and if they come off the bench (and that's where they will be) next season to play us, they won't have a look in. In the next two weeks we will no doubt see more comings then any goings. What a great club we have. There's only one Southampton FC. COYR's

Very valid points but what we don't know is whether the board have tied Koemans hands and imposed a strategy on him.

So whilst I agree we should at least allow 7-10 days to see what happens I for one won't be holding my breath. In my opinion not since Rupert Lowe have Saints been landed with such an inept board. I wonder how they manage to sleep at night knowing how much of the heart is being ripped out of the team. Its so sad to see I want a new owner and board ASAP

You need to not be so stressed about this, demanding resignations and the like. When August comes, we'll be playing top flight football with a crop of young exciting players. If you're not careful you'll stop yourself from being able to enjoy it.....now that would be a waste.

Fair point BUT the difference is I work hard to afford the £750 ish it costs to buy a season ticket the fools running the club get paid for the decisions they make. The point I am trying to make is these decisions aren't either a) enhancing the club or team and to quote Katarina Liebherr b) I want to make the fans smile - I doubt even the fans that have no issues with any of the decisions being made are smiling. The thing I just can't understand is why there is such a significant number of fans that think selling the heart and backbone of the team is fine and we should all keep smiling. How many more sales will it take before people think "oh theres a problem"

When are new manager starts buying players that want to play for us to replace the ones that no longer want to play for us, then maybe you might feel a little better......
