Luke Shaw: I don't feel I need to be playing Champions League football to feel comfortable on the international stage

Basingstoke Gazette: Luke Shaw Luke Shaw

LUKE Shaw refuses to believe he must be playing Champions League football in order to feel totally comfortable on the world stage.

The 18-year-old became the youngest person at this year’s World Cup when he played the full 90 minutes of England’s dead rubber against Costa Rica on Tuesday.

Shaw returned to England with the rest of Roy Hodgson’s squad, and now faces continuing speculation over his future.

Manchester United are keen to sign him, lodging a £27m bid back in May.

In order to keep progressing, Shaw was asked by reporters before he left Brazil whether he felt he needed to be playing Champions League football.

That kind of experience would not come if he was to move to Manchester United this season - but was not something he deemed particularly important to being a success with England anyway.

“You can't really say that because you look at the other teams and they haven't all got Champions League players, have they?” Shaw said.

“I don't know. Obviously Champions League would help, playing against world-class players, but you can't just say that because you look at other teams that have gone through the groups and they haven't got all Champions League players.

“I don't know. I think we'll have a look at it and just to try and move on in the coming few months.”

What he is sure about, though, is that more clubs need to be like Saints.

Saints have long been associated with their focus on home-grown talent, with Shaw one of several academy graduates in the first-team last season like Adam Lallana, James Ward-Prowse and Calum Chambers.

“I think a lot of people have been talking about that,” he said.

“There is only way that that's going to happen and that is if people are playing week in, week out in the best league in the world.

“It has benefited me, the likes of Raheem Sterling and Ross Barkley, so why can't other clubs do that?”

I agree however ManUre are not Champions League this season,,,,,which leaves the door open to a move there, but I think he will just bench warm at Old Trafford for a season at least, so I hope he believes playing every week in the Premier League outweighs sitting on the bench and picking a huge cheque ala Danny Welbeck

surely they will both want to meet with Koeman first to see if they are still `wanted` by him and is in his long term plans. if they want to stay and he wants them to stay we may well hear from them again in a week or 2.
if they want to leave but koeman wants them to stay we may well get both sides talking through the media.
has either player been directly asked by the press if they want to leave?
whether they want to stay or go they aren't going to give away to much to the media as it would weaken their bargaining position. they may well be using this media speculation to try to get a better deal at saint. as you have said seed, Osvaldo was earning nearly twice what they were and they might be a bit annoyed that a player like him gets so much compared to them. I know they signed new contracts last summer but they have both become huge names in international football since then.
to meet up with the England squad and see players that aren't as good as them getting 3 times what they do a week must be hard to take, shrek earns 10 times what lalla allegedly earns!

as for luke and not having to play champs league, hes absolutely 100% right. does baines play in the champs league? what about all the spuds and diverpool players who normally get into the squad? I would rather have a player who plays week in week out in the prem than one who plays a few games here and there with a few champs league games thrown in. England have a captain who hasn't played much champs league.
when you hear idiots like `whispering` phil Neville saying, more than once, that we need these youngsters to be playing champs league, it really gets me. he played champs league for manure and for England and was still carp! is he saing that England should only pick from teams in the champions league? if so none of they diverpool squad would have been picked for this world cup (maybe a few shouldn't have been).
lots of teams don't have many champs league players and they have done ok.

So....... reading between the lines then, if he did have his attitude swayed at some point before or in the early days of the WC he seems to have had a major re-think of his position. Like to see him stay but we do need an effective stand in for him in case of bans/injuries/intern

What part did the realization that he can get as many threesomes as he wants by staying with us play?

Look at all the so called world class players England have who's clubs play in the champions league and how did they play compared to Adam & Luke. Adam came off too early he had the better of they defense. Luke had a solid game played better then Baines. So for players who have not played champions league football they outshone those who do. Luke & Adam will play week in & week out if they stay with us. However, move to manure or the second best team on the Mersey then they will be watching not playing each week. How can that help there England ambitions. he best is for them to come out now and say they are staying at a club which under RK is going upward. The first game will prove this. COYR's

Luke must of realised that playing Premier League for nearly 9 months of the year also throw in Domestic Cup games he's playing against the best in the world, a typical example is Man City & Chelsea who he's already played against at least 3 times, I saw him at St. Marys and he was not fazed and he's playing against 2 Teams full of world class Internationals Players from several countries, Luke hopefully knows and respects that all communications regarding his job is with his Employer, he has probably discussed his career with his parents who he has a very close relationship with an he regards as his best friends and advisor's.
He knows he's very young and if he's modest and mature he knows he's still growing and still has a lot to learn, if he's 5' 8" now in 3 /4 years time he could grow another 3 inches, It wouldn't be unusual to ask his Bosses for an increase in Salary (we've all been there) or his Bosses may offer him an increase, he has a lot to look forward to and hopefully many years of success provided he's patient, we all love him and want the best for him and especially want him to be a Southampton Player for all his playing years

I know this is all conjecture at this point and nothing has yet happened that we know of but I am concerned we are talking about two English players who have recently played for England and will probably feature quite highly in the foreseeable future for their country.

The gossip on who is coming in is about foreign players - the very thing that Saints have prided themselves on playing at least a few English players every game is looking to be threatened. I have no problem with foreign players per se, it's just that there are too many of them and England choices suffer as a result. IMHO we have the balance about right here at Saints and the rest of the PL should be striving to reach our standards and here we are running the risk of being part of the problem and not part of the solution - I am beginning to really be worried over the future of English football. How long before the whole our team is being chosen from championship teams.

Confucious says...

Ronald starts next week and with most of the players now finished with the World Cup hopefully we'll get some clarity soon.

If Luke goes for £30m and that's reinvested it might not be entirely a bad move all in all. But hopefully we will get to keep Adam. His World Cup profile was rather subdued (though that was much more Woy's doing than Adam's) and that may have lessened the chances of a bid. With 25% going to Bournemouth there won't be any upside to losing him.

We need one of the waverers to come out and say he's staying - plus a decent signing from Ronald - and I think things will turn positive and others fall back into place.

This closed season has been tough from day 1 and I'll be glad to see the back of it.

We need one of the waverers to come out and say he's staying - plus a decent signing from Ronald - and I think things will turn positive and others fall back into place. This closed season has been tough from day 1 and I'll be glad to see the back of it. Confucious

Agreed, couple this with the FA and/or medias insistence of picking a squad of players from 'fashionable clubs' pretty much exclusively and a string of managers with no backbone to go against this mantra and what have we got? A bunch of egotistical muppets with no desire to play for their country interspersed by the occasional use of individuals who wonder whether they're the only ones taking the damned thing seriously.

Question is, how long will this situation take to repair? I can't see much changing for the forseeable future

Dear Mr and Mrs Senior Shaw
Please persuade your son Luke to stay at Saint Mary’s.
There are a number of reasons
1. Rooney, Lampard and John Terry all of whom are bad influences as we all found out when Luke was in the papers for all the wrong reasons.
2. Saints have a great strategy in bringing up their youth and keep them grounded to becoming better players and better people.
3. He will not be a bench warmer in the colder months of the season
4. Saints have a ray of young talent in which he can mix and not feel out of place or pressured.

Yet David Luiz sells for £50m?
There is a LOT more money from Sky going around in the BPL right now, and you couldn't repalce Luke Shaw for £15m, isnt he the youngest player to play at this world cup?

Completely agree.

Ronko needs to get Adam to agreed to honor his contract and stay as it is not in Saints best interest to allow him to go especially with the 25% clause to honor. Nicola missed a trick buying out this one when Adam was in league one. With Adam staying then others will be lees restless and more likely to accept it when Ronko tells them they are staying put.

A couple of quality signings in quickly will also settle them all down.
