OVERTON triathlete Aaron Harris has been selected to represent England at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The 26-year-old will join Olympic medallists Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee in the England team after claiming top-10 finishes in World Triathlon Series events in South Africa and Japan.

Harris said: “I did not have the Commonwealth Games as a goal because it was quite a tough qualification battle, with five athletes competing for one spot.

“I always had it in the back of my mind but tried to plan my season without it. If I qualified, it was a bonus, and I am really happy to have been selected.”

Harris is now busy training for the big race, which will take place in Glasgow on July 24, and says he will be disappointed if he fails to finish inside the top 10.

“I would be disappointed if I finished outside of the top 10, and if I perform like I did at the World Series event in Cape Town, then on paper I could finish in the top five,” he said.

“I am not sure what I am capable of, because it will not be like a World Series race, with a much smaller field and less experienced athletes.

“I’m trying not to put a number on it but I will go in as prepared as I can be and see where that takes me.”

Harris changed coaches over the winter and has reaped the rewards from a new training regime, finishing seventh at the World Series event in Cape Town and sixth in Yokohama soon after.

“I have got a new coach and changed the way I train,” he explained. “I did a lot of longer sessions over the winter, worked really hard on my running, and it has paid off massively.

“This is only my second year doing the World Series properly, rather than just throwing myself in at the deep end for a couple of races and seeing how it goes.”
