BOUNTY squash player Stuart Summers capped off a great season by helping England over-40s win the Home International Championships.

Summers helped Bounty to victory in the Berkshire Cup and second place in the Berkshire Premier League.

It was the second time he had been selected for the English Squash Masters team, with the event in Aberdeen expected to be a two-horse race between Ireland and England.

With the favourites clashing in the opening match of the week-end, Summers started well, taking an early lead before the match evened out.

Summers eventually let slip a 2-1 lead in a very long and demanding match, mostly due to the effects of travelling, but England came out winning 4-1 overall.

Next up for England was a match against Wales, who had already beaten Scotland.

This time, Summers showed his form with a 3-0 win – part of a clean sweep of five wins.

Ireland beat Scotland 5-0 in their second round match and then Wales 5-0, which meant England had no room for error against hosts Scotland.

With captain Nick Wall sitting out the game, Summers moved up to number two and won a very tight opening game 13-11.

Summers dug in, changing the tempo of the match with some hard hitting and a deft touch around the front. With his opponent caught off guard, Summers took the second game 11-3.

A desperate battle ensued as both players were pushed to the limit.

Summers’ preparation paid off as he showed great strength in the later stages of both games, taking them 11-8 and 11-9 as he played his part in another 5-0 victory.

Afterwards, Summers praised the help and support of Cheam School with their flexibility granting him the chance to play in qualifying tournaments.

He was also quick to thank Bob Johnson at Pro Kennex, who have supported him throughout the season with their exceptional rackets after their recent re-launch, and long-term kit supplier Stitch-a-Logo.
