England face almost certain elimination after losing 2-1 to Uruguay

England fans despair in The Saints pub in Millbrook

FOOTBALL fans across Hampshire were left in utter misery after England lost 2-1 to Uruguay tonight.

Thousands are currently drowning their sorrows after witnessing Liverpool’s Luis Suarez score twice to all but end England’s World Cup.

Saints captain Adam Lallana was a late substitute alongside his former teammate Rickie Lambert but neither could make a significant impact.

Basingstoke Gazette:

Luis Suarez rifles home the second Uruguay goal

Wayne Rooney had cancelled out Suarez’s first-half opener with his first World Cup finals goal in the 75th minute and the momentum appeared to shift towards the Three Lions.

But a defensive mistake from captain Steven Gerrard let Suarez in one-on-one with Joe Hart and he rifled the ball past the England ‘keeper for the win.

It means England need a minor miracle to qualify and need Italy to beat both Costa Rica tomorrow and then Uruguay in their final game to stand a chance of getting through to the second round.

Even if the Italians are triumphant tomorrow, England would need a convincing victory against Costa Rica with a current goal difference of minus two.

Left Luke Shaw out completely, gave Rickie 5 soddin minutes......that 's you done pal...... P45 for Hodgson; retirement from Gerrard, and a last game if he wants it from Rooney. God only knows what Luis Suarez would have done to this England side if he'd been 100% fit......for all his faults, the guy's sheer class, I doff my hat to a truly great player.

It's too simplistic to just blame foreign players. Good English players now prefer to sit on the bench of a bigger club, because the wages are higher.

Didn't the guy say Uruguay's population is only something like 3.5 million. On the racism point. The other European leagues have no where near the amount of foreigner players as the Premier league. La liga even has a cap on non EU players. There is though nothing stopping are players going and playing in other countries. If you don't count Forster at Celtic all our squad play in the domestic league. Russia, another cash rich league are the other. Funny that.

"lack of grassroots support'? Don't make me laugh.

Look at the backgrounds of some of the South American players - playing football gets them out of the slums. No grassroots support there.

English footballers want it handed to them on a plate. No work ethic. A well deserved defeat.

I don't think anyone here expected them to do well. But we hoped they would.
It's as if our national team don't want to go at it too strong in case they injure themselves for the Premiership. Maybe their home clubs have told them not to. They pay big money for the guys and want their money's worth at the expense of success internationally (just a thought).
But our defense is terrible. We never seem to challenge anyone and keep our distance from attacking players. I've been enjoying watching the other matches though. There have been some superb games with proper world class performances.

Err, the amount of foreign players playing in the Premier League is significantly higher than those in other top European Leagues. But I suppose that a third of Premier League players being English counts for nothing when half the Bundesliga players are German and 59% of La Liga players are Spanish. The City title winning side had Joe Hart as their only English starter. And you wonder why the England team sucks? Loser.

A high number off Uruguay players start off in sports from being in the country arm forces mainly the Navy, theres only 43 teams that play ina league and thats both amutures and professionals, its a country that as around 3 million in population.
England problem is that they underestimated how good Uruguay really are, they are not a second rate team like alot of people think England only as a 41% record with them
