Ronald Koeman will look to add another goalkeeper to Saints’ first-team squad this summer.

The Dutch legend was appointed as the club’s new manager on Monday, and will begin work in earnest when he returns from a short trip to Portugal to spend time with his family.

It will be about another fortnight until Koeman starts to properly meet his players, when the first of them begin to return for pre-season training.

While he will be able to assess the state of his options in greater detail then, the 51-year-old is already well aware of the talent at his disposal.

One area that he and the club are understood to have made a priority for strengthening is the goalkeeper position.

Saints’ current incumbent, Artur Boruc, has been a fairly sound presence in goal for the past 18 months, despite some high-profile errors last season.

But the club have struggled recently for reliable options beyond the 34-year-old.

Club captain Kelvin Davis still has two years left on his contract, and has been a great servant, but the 37-year-old was dogged by a series of injuries last term, making his availability limited.

Paulo Gazzaniga, 22, was signed in 2012 as the club’s keeper for the future, but he has often struggled for form when he has played for the first-team and chances are running out for him.

Koeman is keen wherever possible to promote talent from the club’s youth ranks, with development squad player Cody Cropper, the 21-year-old American, the most obvious prospect in that sense.

However, this may be too early for him, and the most likely scenario when it comes to a goalkeeper is that Saints will dip into the transfer market.

The club are also looking to add a new goalkeeping coach, who could have an input on matters.

Saints say they plan to make a “high-calibre” appointment in the near future.

Saints have already been linked with a number of signings in other positions in the time since Koeman’s appointment became apparent.

Italian striker Graziano Pellè, who scored 50 goals in 57 league appearances during the past two season for Koeman at Feyenoord, has been heavily rumoured to be a target.

However, there is no movement on that front yet, although he may come under consideration.

Celtic centre half Virgil van Dijk, 22, and Lex Immers, a 28-year-old midfielder at Feyenoord, have both been reported as being his top target, although one source has poured cold water on both rumours.
