Gastón Ramírez was an unused substitute, as Uruguay were shocked 3-1 by Costa Rica in their opening game of the World Cup.

The Saints playmaker was left on the bench by Óscar Tabárez, as the South Americans threw away a half-time lead.

Uruguay took control in the 24th minute when Edinson Cavani scored from the penalty spot, after Diego Lugano had been hauled down by Júnior Díaz.

However, Costa Rica turned the game on its head with two goals in the space of three minutes after half-time.

First, Joel Campbell rifled in a left-foot effort, before Óscar Duarte headed home a second.

Uruguay, who also left injured striker Luis Suárez on the bench, went chasing the game, but they were caught again late on, when Marcos Ureña finished smartly to make it 3-1.
