JUSTIN Rose moved up the leaderboard at the US Open with a one-under-par second round of 69 at Pinehurst.
The north Hampshire golfer, who is attempting to defend the title he won last year, needed a good round to ensure he survived the cut after shooting 72 (+2) on the first day.
He got of to a good start, making birdies at holes three and four, but a bogey at eight had him one-under-par at the turn.
A birdie at 14 had Rose back at level par for the tournament, but a bogey five at the final hole meant he had to settle for a round of 69, a score that puts him on -1 and just outside the top 20.
However, the former Robert May's School pupil's chances of retaining the title appear slim. German Martin Kaymer goes into the weekend with a six-shot lead over the field at -10, with Rose 11 shots off the pace.
