Ex-Saint Rickie Lambert's dad has been sacked from his warehouse job over "gross misconduct"

First published in Sport

THE dad of former Saints star Rickie Lambert has been sacked from his job at a warehouse days before his son will play in the World Cup.

It is understood Ray Lambert, 54, lost his job after breaking a glass panel on a vending machine while trying to retrieve a £1 cup of coffee, which he claims was an accident.

Ray, a father of three, was then escorted out of the Matalan distribution warehouse by security guards.

Ex-Saint Rickie recently completed a move back to hometown club Liverpool

He is said to be ‘fuming’ over the dismissal from the £20,000-a-year job and is due to fly out to Brazil next week with wife Maureen, 57 to watch son Rickie, who recently completed a £4m move back to his hometown club.

It completes a rags to riches journey for the ex-Saints striker who fired the club to two consecutive promotions from League One to the Premiership.

Ray had worked for the company for 10 years and is considering appealing the sacking.

Former colleagues have slammed the decision, describing it as “pathetic” and the reasons for dismissal “trivial”.

Rickie has scored three goals in six games for England

But Matalan said there had been “substantial damage to company property” and confirmed he was dismissed for “gross misconduct”.

Ray and Maureen live in Kirkby, Liverpool, less than half a mile from the warehouse.

They plan to watch Rickie play against Uruguay and Costa Rica.

I am sure a few of us have had "run ins" with these vending machines not only with getting money back but the goods you have paid for. Ask a colleague and its normally a bash on the side or shake of the machine. In this case unfortunately the glass broke. I really dont this as gross misconduct. And surely Matalan should have realised once in the media the adverse publicity it would bring them. A reprimand and written warning would have sufficed.

I'm sure Rickie can and will be more than happy to cover the £20k a year now. I know I would if I was earning the sort of money he is, to let me parents enjoy their lives.

#disgrace £1 for coffee at work, what a rip off. I'm not shopping at Matalan until they reinstate him. COY saints, let's get behind this. lets get #bigrayhijobback trending, then Matalan will have to listen. I will be writing to rickie lambert to see if he will wear it under his England shirt, so when he scores in the final he can reveal it!

£1 per cup of coffee at your place of work, surely this gross misconduct charge is the wrong way round. Charging that much, the machine clearly covers its costs including breakages.

Hope everyone tells Matalan to do one and Ray wins an appeal costing them thousands. This world is full of willy ****!

Just consulted my wife who is an HR manager and she confirms in today's wold that would be regarded by most companies as gross misconduct. She thought it would be 50-50 as to whether the person was sacked or given a final written warning.

I must say I was very surprised at what she said. But there you go. It seems very harsh to me.

Nice story but completely irrelevant to us Saints fans now. I am sure Ricky will look after his family after all he can probably buy a mansion for them in Liverpool with his loose change!
Good luck to Ricky as his goals made the difference for us over the last 3 years.
Now for the next chapter for Saints!
