Waiting game for Lallana ahead of England's opening World Cup game against Italy

Roy Hodgson is refusing to reveal whether Adam Lallana will get a coveted spot in the England team for their World Cup opener against Italy on Saturday.

The Three Lions boss is keeping his cards close to his chest as his team make final preparations for facing the Italians.

Excitement is building in Southampton that Lallana, right, who has come through the ranks at Saints after joining as a 12-year-old, will be in the starting line-up.

With speculation also mounting in Brazil, Hodgson has found himself having to fend off questions regarding his team as best he can.

Hodgson said: “I don’t intend on giving too much away, other than what I’ve said on that – that it’s good to have options and choices.”

Hodgson has taken a young squad to Brazil, including 18-year-old Saints left back Luke Shaw, and added: “It’s very exciting. We have a lot of potential but before we build people up too much and say how good they are, let’s see some performances.

“I’m not trying to play down that the future is bright but what I’m saying is we are also going to need our experienced players.”

Hodgson allayed fitness concerns over captain Steven Gerrard ahead of the start of the World Cup.

England begin their campaign against Italy in Manaus on Saturday and part of the build-up has been centred on fitness issues.

Former Saints youngster Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain injured his knee against Ecuador last week, while there were reports that Gerrard has been complaining of a tight groin.

The former has been stepping up his work on the training field over recent days and, according to Hodgson, there are no worries about the latter.

“We did a training session (yesterday) where the players who didn’t play on Saturday (against Honduras) trained, and some of the others did a warm-down session,” he said.

“Steven did some extra work at the end of that training session. There’s nothing wrong with him and I don’t understand that story at all."

On Oxlade-Chamberlain he said: “He’s done very well and will work on his training programme during the course of the week.”

Hodgson is optimistic his side can put in a better showing against Italy than when they were knocked out of Euro 2012 with Andrea Pirlo in imperious form.

“Of the four matches we played at Euro 2012, the Italy game, if you take our overall performance, was our worst performance, and all the players would agree with me,” said Hodgson.

“How are we going to stop Pirlo? What we’re going to do first of all is we’re going to play better against Italy this time than we did then.

“We’ll play with more energy because we’ll have more energy, because it will be the first game in the tournament. We’ll be even more compact than we were in that game.

“We’re going to make certain also that Italy have a lot more to concern themselves with our attacking play, because one of the problems we had in that game is that we weren’t functioning well as an attacking unit. So Italy had too much of the ball and we were doing too much defending.

“One of our plans this time is to make certain we do a lot more attacking and that Italy find themselves wondering what they’re going to do about people like Steven Gerrard or Wayne Rooney.”

It would be good to see him in the starting 11, but sense he will be used as a sub. Either way it is a fantastic achievement for our captain

Continuing worrying statements from Hodgson, saying Italy need to be worried more about Rooney.

Can't help but feel that England's chances will improve the less Rooney is played but that this won't happen unless he actually picks up an injury. Might be worth Lallana crocking him in training on Friday.

You COULD ARGUE that the GK - Defence and Strikers have done enough to get their names penned on the Team Sheet.

Where there is UNCERTAINTY is the Midfield positions - as it will be a KEY BATTLEFIELD during the first game.

One STRATEGY used by Italy playing ENGLAND is a ball over the Top to bypass the Midfield so our CB Pairing will need to be at their very best.

SUPPORT THE SAINTS CAPTAIN - to feature during this game.

Perhaps Lalla only said, 'I want to play for diverpool because it would guarantee me a starting place in the world cup'.
It also might be the reason that Roy said he would allow medical etc to be done in Miami. The press wont 'batter' him so much if his squad come from the, so called, big clubs!

Lalla is still a saints player and so is Luke, I will still think of SRL as a saint until he plays for diverpool, they will get my full support whilst playing for England. All our other players will get my support as well. what a great way to end a fantastic season, seeing our stars in the biggest tournament in world football!

Quite Right - SUPPORT THE SAINTS.

What is more difficult for Fans is Adam - The Chamelion - LALLANA is very changeable.

Reports that he has CHANGED - and become detached and big headed with the rise and success of SOUTHAMPTON FC.

WE DON'T MIND OUR CAPTAINS BEING PREMADONNAS - BUT EXPECT LOYALTY FROM A PASSIONATE FAN BASE.

There are mixed feelings out there about Adam and his England Performance

IDEALLY - He will commit to SAINTS and the New Gaffer will continue to BUILD THE TEAM around him. COYR

As our captain, Lallana shouldn't have been saying that he would be sitting down after the World Cup to discuss his future. He should have kept this private, because his comment has been unsettling for our players and fans, alike; it lacks leadership quality. Loyalty is important.

Adam will play. Roy started his strongest 11 in two of the final warm up games and Adam was in it.

Not sure about the Rooney negativity going round. While I understand it on performances if you imagine he was recovering from injury now the country would be in panic desperate for him to play.

The English press and public seem to like targeting star players for criticism (such as KP and Rooney etc) but on the basis of performance there are surely three or four England players who deserve to be dropped as well as Roo.

Gerrard is our captain, yet he's probably only worth one good game in 10, Wellbeck has been poor, and many others have just been coasting along.

That said, at least Gerrard and Rooney are both capable of a match winning performance, so you can't really not play them when the other options aren't exceptional.

However, I do hope Roy shows a bit more faith in Rickie than he has in recent friendlies. He is a ready made Rooney replacement on 60-70 minutes if he doesn't perform. Problem is Roy seems to be treating him like he doesn't trust him. Reminds me a bit of the England Crouch situation - the best goals per game rate of any England striker on the plane but didn't get any game time because he was unfashionable.

Roy needs to choose players who can win the psychological battle as well as the physical one. I remember when our school team played a school in Milan every time we got a tackle in we used to mutter a phrase in Italian we had all learned to wind them up. The English version was: "Ha ha, sissy Eyetie - I bet you have to shave your mum."

they did not.... they exposed his weakness.... and its a big one. He is not the complete "team" player yet for England. I think he is still in "trying to impress" mode and he gave the ball away far too cheaply too often. I would not risk him against Italy. We are not in that game to try and win 4-3 , its going to be nick it 1-0 or 2-1 or settle for a draw..... for that we need experience and ball keepers.... can't believe I am about to say this but Milner should start... and Welbeck if fit.

I did find myself in trouble over that one with the Feminist Society, despite my well deserved reputation for supporting gender equality. Quite unfairly they've been after me for years - and worryingly they even got hold of my address. Fortunately none of them can read a map.

saintjd,
people aren't just attacking shrek others have come in for criticism as well. I for one have no idea how wellbad gets picked.
going back to shrek, look at him side by side with other `match winners` from other teams and see how many match winning performances they put in to his. then look at their fitness levels. now don't et me wrong I don't like looking at men with their tops off, but there was a side by side comparison of Ronaldo and shrek on facebook the other day, Ronaldo looked lean with muscles in places I didn't know existed whilst shrek had a bit of a `beer belly`. if shrek wants to be considered a top professional sports man and a `match winner` he needs to get quite a bit fitter. when he burst onto the scene he was slimmer and faster, he seems to have let himself go and hasn't had a great game for England since Portugal 04. I think that because he is guaranteed to play he doesn't try.
I was never a big fan of beckham, most of his career was hype, he had one foot and couldn't run past people with the ball beckham though was a match winner because he wanted to win every game and did everything he could to win. could you see shrek putting in a performance like beckham did against Greece? not only did he score the free kick but he basically took that game by the scruff of its neck and won it single handed. I just cant see shrek doing that anymore. roy plays top players out of position to accommodate him and it just doesn't work. we shouldn't be a one man team and have enough top players to threaten anyone.

Reminds me a bit of the England Crouch situation - the best goals per game rate of any England striker on the plane but didn't get any game time because he was unfashionable.
saintjd,
people aren't just attacking shrek others have come in for criticism as well.
Reasonable enough assessment. He used to have an aggressive edge, almost spiteful and any centreback knew he had a caged tiger in front of him. Nowadays it seems he's more of a free range koala. He just doesn't scare defences any more.

Good luck Adam & Luke, have a good tournament and come back committed to Saints because you are going nowhere so get used to it.

Saints don't want or need to sell either of you, the club has spent the last 5 years building the current squad so why break this up just as it is about to push on again to another level.

You both have long term contracts, as have the others, so start to commit to the new project that you signed up to only a year ago.

As far as the starting line-up goes against Italy, I think Rooney is more nailed on to start than Adam although I can see them both getting the nod. I’m not a Rooney apologist, but I think he has to be utilised correctly behind Sturridge in the first game or it was a waste of time taking him.

I’ve done my tipping comp predictor and the biggest first round casualties are Netherlands and Italy. Brazil and Argentina will meet in the final .... cracking.

The only clubs to have ever won the world cup are France, Uruguay and countries that geographically border them. I’m using the Channel Tunnel as a tenuous border for England.

Come on Aussie.

My philosophy in life is to never to sh1t yourself at the first sign of trouble, face it head on and roll with the punches. You need to treat yourself to a long weekend in Latvia, come back refreshed and enjoy the greatest sporting show on earth.

True, but there is still time for him to perform. Personally, I can't see there is enough quality in the squad for us to drop him. If Rickie were 27 maybe.

He also does a lot defensively and can tuck into midfield (which he does far too often in my opinion, thus why he doesn't score enough or threaten defences by being in the right area of the pitch). That's why I don't think you can leave him out.

It's simple really - if somebody said to any club that for no transfer fee you could have either Wayne Rooney or Rickie Lambert how many would choose Rickie?

Rickie may well have outperformed Rooney this season arguably, but most would opt for Rooney I think.

Also, he should be fresher and fitter due to his lack of games this season and particularly the surprising lack of big games Man Utd have been involved in (no title or cup pressure), so, in theory, this is his big chance to make a proper impact with no excuses.

Agree he's been cr@p for a long time, but equally he's not had many high intensity games of late. Personally I'd keep faith.

As for fitness, Gazza (who actually can claim to be worthy of legend status because he performed unlike Wayne) was knocking back lager and cocktails in a dentist chair prior to Euro 96. Now it's time for Rooney to do the same.

I do feel this might be his last chance though.

I cant believe this one as Mancini is hardly used to working in a budget. But on the other hand he does have something to prove since his demise at MC.
These rumours will continue to circulate until we appoint someone. I was told last week that Benitez was seen leaving St Mary's

Can't say I'd be unhappy with this appointment. He has a far better all levels track record than Koeman and probably more likely to persuade players to stay. If true it would be a major statement of intent by the Board. That of course would really upset half the people who post here!

Mancini 11/10
Koeman 13/8
Ranieri 13/2

with:
Lennon 12/1
Bruce 16/1

I quite like the direction that one's going.

Continuing worrying statements from Hodgson, saying Italy need to be worried more about Rooney.

Can't help but feel that England's chances will improve the less Rooney is played but that this won't happen unless he actually picks up an injury. Might be worth Lallana crocking him in training on Friday.

Reminds me a bit of the England Crouch situation - the best goals per game rate of any England striker on the plane but didn't get any game time because he was unfashionable.
saintjd,
people aren't just attacking shrek others have come in for criticism as well.
Reasonable enough assessment. He used to have an aggressive edge, almost spiteful and any centreback knew he had a caged tiger in front of him. Nowadays it seems he's more of a free range koala. He just doesn't scare defences any more.

Keep faith in what?. He (Rooney) has consistently failed the test of tournament football against the best teams. This time, on Saturday, it will be more obvious than ever because he isn't fit and he has come into this on the back of a terrible season in the premiership. He looks a haunted figure to me even before the real unravelling has begun.

The first thing to take from that is use a different site. Betfair (where you get the true picture) has 2.4 koeman; 10 on touched or mancini and 15 on Ranieri. Name your price on anyone else, it's these 4 on the shortlist, bar maybe Mancini who could just be there due to media guesswork and blind rumour.

His name possibly originated in Germany. As it is now spelt oe it may have been an umlaut o. This means his name originally would have been pronounced Kurman with less emphasis on the r.

Not sure how the Dutch would pronounce it but I dont think you'd be laughed at in Holland if you were to say Kuurman. I have a Dutch lady lives just down the road next time I see her I'll ask her. Beside which most Dutch are such nice people they wouldn't mind the mistakes and be only too happy that you had a go at the correct pronunciation.

Touched? Tuchel. And Koeman has just dropped again in the last few moments. Meaning I sold again adding to potential profit, nice.

I really don't give a **** about Lallana any more. Treat him with the contempt he has treated us since this transfer talk all started.

He only had to make one little statement about having a contract to fulfill etc and mean it. It's the measure of the man that we, the ones who pay his wages, did not even warrant that little crumb of comfort.

As was said about one of our prime ministers, "For all the good you are doing, go"
