GINA Rapacioli won the Basingstoke Badminton Cup held at Basingstoke Sports Centre, with Lacey Lewis winning the Plate competition.

This annual tournament involves players from BCoT and Queen Mary’s College and this is the second year of the competition.

It is jointly organised by the college sports maker Tatum Colclough, and the Basingstoke Sports Trust operations manager, Sally Lewis. The main focus of the competition is on fun and enjoyment.

The event, which is jointly sponsored by Basingstoke and Deane Mayor Cllr Dan Putty and the Basingstoke Sports Trust, who manage the Sports Centre, proved to be another massive success.

Next year, it is hoped to open entries to other local colleges with the aim of boosting participation numbers and expanding the competition.

This singles round-robin competition saw students take part in initial group stages, which led onto a cup and plate competition.

In the final, Queen Mary’s College’s Rapacioli beat Sam Kersley, also from QMC, 21-12.

Both players play in the local league and are qualified coaches, assisting in the various inclusive adult and junior Allstars Badminton clubs.

This was further success for Rapacioli as the 16-year-old also won the Basingstoke and Newbury League restricted adult ladies doubles.
