Steven Davis says even the most committed Southampton fans would find it hard to begrudge Rickie Lambert his transfer too Liverpool

Saints midfielder Steven Davis believes even the club's most committed fans will not begrudge Rickie Lambert his dream move to Liverpool.

The England striker left St Mary's to join his boyhood team this week, completing a remarkable rise through the divisions to the Champions League.

Saints supporters will be devastated to see the hitman leave after a prolific five-year spell, but Davis does not expect any bitterness towards his former team-mate.

The Northern Ireland captain recalls how pleased Lambert was to play at Anfield as an away player and is glad he can now turn out for his hometown heroes.

''I think everyone is delighted for Rickie. Even the most diehard Saints fans who will have hated to see him leave the club will respect what he has done,'' said Davis, who will lead his country in a friendly in Chile on Wednesday night.

''He's had an unbelievable time there and fired the club from League One to eighth position in the Premier League.

''I think he has deserved this move, I don't think anyone will begrudge him it and I am delighted for him personally.

''I know how much it will mean for him to sign for Liverpool and I hope he will go on to be a success there, which I'm sure he will, because he has all the attributes and attitude.

''I'm sure he thought his time was gone in terms of getting his chance to go there, but I remember how much it meant to him just to play at Anfield with Southampton in our first season back in the Premier League, he had all his family there.

''It's been an unbelievable rise for him and that is a credit to him for how he has adapted his game.''

Saints fans may be less magnanimous if Lambert turns out to be the first of several high-profile departures, with Liverpool also circling captain Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw repeatedly linked with Manchester United.

Although the club are currently managerless, Mauricio Pochettino having been cherry-picked by Tottenham at the end of the season, Davis is confident a team who excelled last term will not fall apart.

''We had a great season and kept progressing, it went very quickly because it was so enjoyable,'' he said.

''Of course, it could be difficult to hold on to players but I'm sure the club has a plan in place to keep moving the club forward.

''We want to get to the next level and that means keeping the players we have and also adding to it.''

So disappointed when anyone leaves but Rickie a speciaI case. Getting older now and achieving all his dreams in the last year must have been like heaven to him.

Absolutely delighted that the Saints agreed to the move - a fair reward to a man who (in my opinion) was the lead in our promotion from the bottom of the pile when he joined to where we are today. I know it was a team effort but Rickie would be my choice as the man that history will show was the leading light

Also hate conspiracy theories about Liverpool softening up some other players by buying Rickie up cheap.

ITS ONLY ABOUT MONEY and who wouldn't change jobs for a pay rise of whatever it happens to be (Does anyone really know????)

What would we do if we were offered 100% more PLUS the chance for all the extras such as probably playing in Europe, a higher profile, better sponsorships and mixing with even more superstars

The more I hear from Davis the more I like him. He seems level-headed, committed and mature - we could do worse than offer him the captain's armband (if AL goes, or does want to go).

Dependable, good work rate, underrated, seemingly loyal and not panicking about there being no manager in place.

Thanks Steve for a bit of positive talk for once. At least we know now that there is at least one committed player at St Marys. This whole sorry business has gone on far too long and a disgrace to the Premier league that these so called "top" teams can hang around like vulters to snap up any youngster with promise even though stuffed full of better players themselves already. There should be a set premium for any young player who has come through the parent clubs academy. Saints should now put a price of at least 50m each to compensate their loss. Or ask for Suez, Stirling or some of that caliber as part of the deal to enable us to start next season on a level we so admirably achieved this season Otherwise the whole thing is a complete farce.

I don't begrudge him the move.

I'm fecked off with the way football has changed since the Premiership, Sky money and the Champion's League turned it into a private club for the rich boys.

I don't begrudge LS or AL their moves either, if they make them. I'm fecked off with a system that's biased to ensure that we will always lose world-class players to teams playing on bigger stages and paying significantly bigger wages. £300,000 a week for Shrek? Any player as good as Luke & Adam are going to want some of that, and I don't blame them a bit. I just think that somehow, football needs to be reclaimed while there's still a chance of keeping it worth following.

How many more bloody stories are the DE gonna print about how flamin' brilliant it is for Rickie to be playing for Liverpool. I think we get the message now, let's move on. As far as I'm concerned he's history now. Let's start hearing some positives about the new manager, transfer targets, expectations for the next season. Anything but this drivel!

It is possible that Steve has not had a chance to read the glowing farewells to SRL but it is good to read his comments.

Also, I take some encouragement from his comments. Keeps up the sequence of RK's announcement, then bye, bye Rickie, RK's next announcement, then AL and LS say we want to go and now good news again in the thoughts of Steve.

Let's hope the sequence is broken and we now get more good news with the name of our new manager.

Steve's words - he obviously doesn't know anything either - a bit like the media circus stirring things up.

I like SD and he would make a great captain.

Good luck to Rickie, but as SAINTRICKIE46 says - time to move on.

Let's all deal with fact and not speculation

True, but Ron Davies died over here in the U.S. broke and had to ask fans for money to pay for his medical bills. That should never have happened. SRL is the new and improved Ron Davies, may he rest in peace.

Agree with most on here today, except the piddling PUP-they need a new cry, cos that PUP definitely ain't working.
I'm old enough to see how much football has changed.
Whilst Martin Peters did get a transfer some time later, can you imagine him, Hurst and Peters negotiating a transfer so close to our World Cup build up in '66? Crass, greedy and corrupt are my charges today.
Bad comedians and cars and some football folk have very bad timing, and should be found guilty of treason. Football can be magical, but it looks quite sordid and pathetic right now.

Don't blame Rickie -top man- but there will be people playing the "blame game" quite soon, and my (2) finger's already pointed at the PL mandarins. They are traitors, and hanging's too good for 'em.
