Van Gaal was "very close" to taking Tottenham job before Pochettino was appointed

Basingstoke Gazette: Louis Van Gaal Louis Van Gaal

Louis Van Gaal has revealed he was "very close" to being appointed Tottenham boss before the north London club swooped for Saints' Mauricio Pochettino instead.

The Dutch coach said the position at White Hart Lane did interest him prior to being appointed David Moyes' successor at Manchester United after the World Cup.

Asked how near he was to taking the job at Tottenham, Van Gaal said: "Very close, very close.

"As a little boy I was a fan of Tottenham Hotspur with the team of Jimmy Greaves when he was the champion.

"Jimmy Greaves was my idol, so I was very close."

And it means MP is not first choice, which makes it even easier for Levy to sack him.

So this whole sorry chain of events can be traced back to the underwhelming performances of Marouane Fellaini, Tom Cleverly and co.

This must be some sort of karma for laughing at their relative ineptitude this season.

If MP is not tottenham's first choice, there's still a chance that he will sacked by spurs just like tim sherwood

First choice, second choice, there's a good chance he'll be sacked before the season's over.

Why would someone want to be second choice. This just confirms we where just a stepping stone. Spud's history shows MOPO will not be there for long. He had a great team here, players and fans that loved him, the Spud's fans and players won't. One of my mates is a Spud's fan and he is already saying what a bad choice Daniel Levy has made. Having said that it seems to be the pattern at Spud's to hire then fire very quickly. Once again the bright lights of London where calling but the roads are not paved with gold as MOPO will find out by being second choice.
