JUSTIN Rose’s final tournament before he defends his US Open crown did not go to plan, the north Hampshire golfer missing the cut at the Memorial Tournament.

The world number nine won the event at Muirfield Village, in Ohio, four years ago but did not fare so well this time around, carding rounds of 72 (par) and 73 (+1) to miss the cut by a single shot.

Rose was two-under-par after 11 holes of his first round, but his progress was halted by a double-bogey five at the par-three 12th. Further bogeys followed at 14 and 16, but he rescued a level-par round with birdies at the last two holes.

The 33-year-old endured an up-and-down round on day two of the event, recording three birdies but four bogeys to finish one-over-par, missing the cut by one shot.

The tournament was won by Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama, who beat American Kevin Na in a play-off.

Rose is not in action this weekend, so his next event will be the defence of his US Open title at Pinehurst, in North Carolina, which gets under way next Thursday.
