Mauricio Pochettino leaves Southampton to become the new manager of Tottenham Hotspur

Mauricio Pochettino has been appointed as the new manager of Tottenham Hotspur this evening, after resigning from Saints.

The 42-year-old has signed a five-year-deal with the north London club, replacing Tim Sherwood, who was sacked two weeks ago.

He is joined at Tottenham by his assistant manager Jesus Perez, first team coach Miguel D'Agostino and goalkeeping coach Toni Jimenez.

Speaking of his appointment on Spurs' website, Pochettino said: "This is a club with tremendous history and prestige and I am honoured to have been given this opportunity to be its head coach.

"There is an abundance of top-class talent at the club and I am looking forward to starting work with the squad.

"Tottenham Hotspur has a huge following across the world and I have great admiration for the passion the fans show for this team.

"We are determined to give the supporters the kind of attacking football and success that we are all looking to achieve."

Saints confirmed this evening that they had accepted Pochettino's resignation ahead of his move to Spurs.

A condition of his exit is that he must settle the remainder of his contract with the club. That sum will be about £2m, which was the Argentine’s annual salary at the club.

Saints chairman Ralph Krueger has said that the search for a "new high-calibre manager" has already begun.

Former Espanyol coach Pochettino joined Saints in January 2013, when he replaced Nigel Adkins, who was controversially sacked by the club.

He helped keep them in the Premier League last season, before guiding them to a record Premier League campaign this term, with the side finishing eighth and amassing 56 points.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy said: "In Mauricio I believe we have a head coach who, with his high energy, attacking football, will embrace the style of play we associate with our club.

"He has a proven ability to develop each player as an individual, whilst building great team spirit and a winning mentality.

"We have a talented squad that Mauricio is excited to be coaching next season."

Saints defender Luke Shaw responded to his manager's departure on Twitter.

"Would like to thank Mauricio For everything he has done for me," he said. "Great manager, great guy and has helped me a lot. Wish him all the best."

This would not have happened with Nicola in charge.

It just shows what a clown Ralph is and how he is clearly out of his depth running a club this size.
(I hope he has put a no poaching (of players) clause into the agreement but with Ralph in charge he probably hasn't even thought about it)

There's always a bigger fish/deeper pockets out there. If he does well at spurs, he'll be snapped up by manure; if he does well there he'll end up at Real Madrid, and on and on.

Thanks for a great season, MoPo. Please don't take Lallana and Shaw with you though!

Most seriously: at least this happened now, and we have a good pick of management talent out there with a few weeks to negotiate. No player deals will get done of the calibre we want until after the World Cup. So thanks to Krueger for the breathing space created by moving quickly once it became almost inevitable.

I don't understand the anger towards the board and RK and KL in particular - it was Poch's choice to go..He is an overrated manager who never showed any loyalty to the club (threatening to quit last summer as well)..He inherited an incredibly talented team and only made one worthy addition, being Lovren..He claimed we deserved to win every single game (in Spanish of course) and the way he treated the FA cup this year was disgusting. Personally, I'm not sorry to see him go and in any case, his departure was his own choice..He'll fail at Spurs for sure.

He was Cortese's appointment and this was always on the cards, once he came out with that statement of not being here if Cortese left.
What sticks in the throat is the duplicitous way he has harped on about contract talks in the summer, indicating that it wouldn't be much of a fight to get him to stay and his constantly reminding us of the year he still had on his contract.

I will still wait and see what the new manager is given, in way of transfer funds and support in keeping the key players, but for me, MP has behaved shamefully.

Mauricio Pochettino inherited a team put together by other managers and the very best of our academy players. I don't think MP will ever get the opportunity again to manage a talented team like Saints had this season and I can't imagine another Saints manager paying £15million for Osvaldo and showing no interest for winning the FA cup because he didn't want to play in the Europa cup. We are better to get things sorted out now rather than wait for players to leave us high and dry come the January transfer window which is what would have happened if MP had stayed and Saints were struggling. OK so we may not finish in the top half if we lose our star players but if we get a well respected manager and invest in new players (doesn't have to be British) we can still have a good season and build for the long term unlike Spuds who will have to do this all again when MoPo moves on to another project after 1 season..

What about Paul Clement he is available.
An English football coach currently working at Spanish La Liga club Real Madrid, assisting head coach Carlo Ancelotti. Clement has also previously worked for Ancelotti at Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain.

Are we surprised? The important thing now is to find the right replacement so let's go forward rather than look at the grim side of things. Lennon has only managed a 'championship' side in Scotland, Raffa would upset us with constant changes, McClaren is old hat, McKay was not a success at Cardiff, so...we have to look abroad again. They must have the quality football philosophy we have enjoyed over the last couple of years.

As long as the money is there then we can certainly find more gems like Jose and Morgan. Never has the summer been so important for St Mary's.

Totally agree. The important thing is to get a new man of real quality in quickly. I remember our defeat against Sunderland B in the cup and the Cardiff farrago. May he choke on the money. The players are the important thing now, refuse to sell, they are under contract & Liverpool showed with Suarez, it can be done.

Agree. I don't know what Mo Po did in a previous life to deserve to be working for Daniel Levy but it must have been something awful! The last Southampton manager to move to a 'bigger Club' didn't last 12 months!
Spurs have a great academy though and a history of producing great players like Gareth Bale -LOL.
The Saints board knows what they are doing and we will have a better replacement very soon. He may even speak English!

To be fair, his appointment was sly and a cynical abuse of the work Nigel Adkins had put in. We all reacted to that, but soon forgot because he improved our position. However, he made no secret of the fact that he was sly and disloyal, so I guess we can't be angry with him for being true to type.

I wish him luck - he is going to need it.

You have been great for us and the widespread dissapointment of the fans reflects what a fantastic job you did here.

Not the best start Mr Krueger to get the fans onside. This needs to be sorted quickly to prevent the club falling backwards.

I only wish assurances could have been made for MoPo that the club would continue to build on their recent successes.

For he's known for his coaching and his tactics are apparently second to none . Pep Guadiola always stated he admired his management of the Barcelona team and their youth to which has a similar nucleus to our very own. Not sure if he has fully recovered from his illness though...just a thought but wages could be a factor which is a blatant fact why MP has left....It can't be because we could possibly sell our best players because Spurs are the worst for doing that. Still can't get my head around the fact that MP has side stepped and not gone to a so called bigger club...... Would like to see Martin O'Neill step up. (Not Howe, no skates allowed through the door).

The issues you raise in your post I agree with are NONE OF US know what was said in the boardroom despite what some people claim & we need to see who is appointed. My issue is with a lack of confidence in Kruegers and KL's judgement to get this critical appointment right. We need them to tell us whether they want 1-2 years of consolidation then a big push for a top 6 place or whether they don't really care for that improvement given the inevitable cost. From day 1 it was clear they were concerned at the money spent. Understandable it maybe given it is her families money but the lack of open communication from the club is annoying and worrying. I fear we won't get a manager that will thrill the fans. Now I suspect you'll still believe I am pathetic because I don't share your view but at least I have the guts to back my view with observations. Finally surely KL could have held MP to the 1 year left on his contract to accept his resignation to me suggests they didn't want him anyway

In that case, why was he brought in if they put together such a good squad?

That is the question that should be put to the board.

I thought that Nigel Adkins was doing a good job, and would have stayed, not quit at the first opportunity.

Personally I can't understand why anyone would take the spurs job over southampton. For me it's the most boring job in football. They'll never quite achieve what they think they should be achieving so will always be slightly disappointed. I'm from Liverpool but live here in southampton & the setup, infrastructure & culture here at southampton is superb. There is something to build on here & it's only going to grow & develop. I don't think the loss of the manager will effect that as the manager is just 1 element in what you're doing here, and not the biggest one. What is there to build at spurs? What would they class as their objective or goal? Will they ever get it & will their aim be enough for their fans anyway.
Southampton are respected & it's exciting times to be involved with southampton, either as a supporter or staff.
Can't understand why anyone would chose spurs over it. How dull.
I how you finish above them next season & I think there's a good chance you will. (Please don't beat Liverpool again though!)

I reckon Poch really had unfinished business at St. Mary's but suppose he felt Champions League was a better bet at Spuds.

He certainly changed things for us and some very attractive football was the result. But someone mentioned that our record against the top teams was not very special and that would have been a continuing worry.

So we live with the fact, as expected in all honesty, that it is bye bye. I just hope the new man says No, No, No to any approaches for any player. But be braced for some more disappointments.

Hope the Board remembers we love our club and we want to progress. Relegation fights no longer are the Southampton way.

New appointment should be made very quickly and let's hope it will be the RIGHT one.

For those saying this is the end, the journey's over, etc.

For all we know, we might be about to appoint a manager who shares the same vision and ambition as we all do, we manage to persuade at least the majority of the first team to stay (I doubt we'll keep everyone), bring some exciting young players through the academy to fill any spaces left and next season we'll still be at the very least a solid mid-table side, if we get a couple of decent signings then we might even do better than this season. Nobody can rule it out (some may think it's highly unlikely but let's all think positively while we can). It'd be even better if we went on to finish above Spurs now (we're not that much worse than them quality-wise at the moment).

For those who say Pochettino is overrated and are happy to see him go:

Fair enough, you have sufficient evidence--he inherited a squad built mostly by Adkins and some could say Lovren was our only major improvement from last season signings-wise. Then again, for many others the fact we set a record points total and got 4 players called up for England could be very easily seen as sufficient evidence to suggest otherwise.

For those slating the board:

They offered him a contract, Pochettino rejected it in favour of Spurs. You can't just make someone stay by force, this was a huge decision for Pochettino and one he can't simply wave away because of how well he's done here and how much he means to us. This is for his career, after all, so I for one wish him well.

Finally for the few Portsmouth fans trying to rub salt into the wounds:

I'd like to remind you that last season there were seventy-three places between Saints and Portsmouth. 73. But things will brighten up, it may take a few years but look at what Saints have done since 2009. Look at Atlético Madrid: 10 years ago (or something like that) they were in Spain's second division, this season they were runners-up in the Champions League and won the Spanish league title. And I for one would, if I had to be honest, admit I'd enjoy the PL more if both of us were there. Wouldn't that be fun!

Football is full of ups and downs for everyone from time to time.

Also good luck to Adam, Luke and Rickie at the World Cup! (only 16 days!!!)

COYS!

(only 16 days!!!) COYS! SaintsFan97

It's time for a few home truths me thinks.Your club is a feeder club for us big clubs, always has been always will be.Like with Hoddle & Bale we don't ask, we take. You have no say in the matter. That academy of yours might say SFC on the outside but be in no doubt it belongs to us.You can't complain though we chucked you a couple of million when we sold Bale, as a kind of pat on the head, aren't we kind. Who knows maybe our new gaffer will come and take a few of your players and give them the chance to taste some glory. That Lovren will be just right for the lane, although you can keep the Italian lad.
Try and enjoy the summer lads.Let's hope you will be able to field a starting eleven on opening day.

COYS!
Spot on!

When Pardew was sacked there was uproar but Adkins did OK as the new manager. When Adkins was sacked there was uproar but MoPo did OK. Now MoPo has gone i think we need to see how the new Manager does (whoever that may be) before people threaten a revolt. If at Christmas Saints are in the bottom 3 playing all 17/18 year olds then maybe a problem.

As for transparency by the board, yes maybe there should have been more details given to fans, but the fact is that MoPo was offered a new contract and he decided to turn it down and move to Spurs. The details of the new contract should be between Saints and MoPo (and their representatives). If I am offered a new contract at work I would not want it made public (to my collegues let alone anyone else).

As for a mass exodus of players, maybe if the board get a high profile manager in, those players will want to stay to play for them.

We need to see what happens over the next few weeks with a new manager and signings.

Dream on you're a small team in London, all our good players have gone to Arsenal they wouldn't come near you lot. You were just a stop gap for Bale until he went to a big club with Modric. Arsenal and Real Madrid = Champions League football that's the difference. You can play at being big time in the Europa League but you're just little boys and Poch will make no difference

How many Argentinians played for Spurs? Sorry but he was losing the way in the second half of the season we lost to Cardiff at home we weren't doing so good exactly what was the points tally second half of the season?
He threw away the FA Cup so was he really that good?
Spurs 5 year contract exactly how long did their last two managers last?
Surely if he was thinking of a long term contract with Spurs he would have noticed the way managers go from there?
I wonder if the wonder kid at Bournemouth would be a good replacement?

How much has Les Reeds ego got to do with this? The conspiracy theorists were suggesting that he had more than a hand in Nicolas departure, then we see Doddsy unceremoniously kicked out and now we lose a manager to a team whose managers office has a revolving door !

Despite all Mr Reeds statements "no one will be leaving" etc , etc and Freddie Kruegers positive spin we are already seeing our prize assets being stripped.
Shame on the board for allowing this situation to happen. Worse still they have conned the supporters by bringing forward the Season ticket renewal window forward as they obviously realised they would sell sod all once we realised what was going on.

Still it could be worse, we could be the skint lot down the road who came so close to playing local league derbies against Eastleigh!

18 months to 2 years is getting to be normal for the life expectancy of a EPL manager now. Murat Yakin and Ronald Koeman seem to be neck and neck in the betting. If I was chairman of Saints I would go for a different style than MP. I would go all out for Rafa Benitez

After reading most of the comments on here I will say only this....GOODBYE AND GOOD RIDENCE MR POCHETTINO.....this great club will nether miss you or mourne your departure. You left to further your own career, like Glen Hoddle before you.... you could n't get out of our club quick enough. As a player and as a manager Hoddle would wipe the floor with you, and even he could n't last at Spurs. My only regret in all this is that we lost a truly genuine, decent, and succesfull manager to bring you to this this club. I would normaly wish you good luck in your new club....cos god only knowsyour gonna need it....but in your case I just cant bring myself to do it.

Out of all the names mentioned...Poyet would get my vote. It was our young hungry talented players that made Poch look good, not the other way round. He simply carried on the good work done by Adkins. Whereas what Poyet did with the Mackems is nothing short of genius. He showed tactical briiliance to win at Chelsea, United and City (2-1 up before Mannone error) and brilliant morale boosting man-management to salvage the Di Canio mess (bottom at christmas and seven points adrfit with six games to go) and reach the League Cup final. He is of a similar mould to Poch...young enthusiastic ex-international south american tracksuit manager who really mucks in and connects with the players forming a tight-knit fearless team. But with the added bonus of speaking english, better connection with the fans, familiar with the South Coast etc.

Hardly an appropriate analogy! Saints are up and coming, exciting and appreciated by the connoisseurs, so Waitrose? And Spuds think they're alot better than anyone else see's them, and very little difference to us- Sainsbuy's?

This would not have happened with Nicola in charge.

It just shows what a clown Ralph is and how he is clearly out of his depth running a club this size.
(I hope he has put a no poaching (of players) clause into the agreement but with Ralph in charge he probably hasn't even thought about it)
A week or so or more I said that the board were not up to it and was shouted down.

I have never read such a load of posturing rubbish. The Echo just can't leave it alone. You have to jump straight in on the basis of guess work and assumptions and stir up anti Board sentiment. Have you got an inside source at the Club? Why not read it this way? Poch was Cortese's appointment. No one else had a say. Cortese threw his toys out the pram when he couldn't go on getting his own way when the owner decided enough was enough. She and her team were quite relaxed about Poch leaving because they think he is not actually as great as you assume him to be. They think they can do better and they want to put their own stamp on things. So, why don't you just try WAITING and see who they appoint before you sound off.

What a mess! Dear oh dear...player exodus. Relegation rears it's ugly head? Adkins returns? Owner not really interested in footy just dosh? Disgruntled season ticket holders threatening to stay away?

There's always that poor little progressive football club down the road you can turn too if it does go really pear shaped next season.
