Hartley Wintney aim for back-to-back wins

Basingstoke Gazette: Jack Hersh celebrates his century Jack Hersh celebrates his century

HARTLEY Wintney are looking forward to their trip to Paultons this Saturday after an excellent 86-run victory at Langley Manor last weekend in Southern League Division Two.

The village side will be boosted for their road trip by the return of captain Jamie Teale, along with experienced duo Jack Cockram and Matt Digweed.

They face a side whose opening game of the season saw them bowled out for 79 at Calmore Sports.

Hartley skipper Teale said: “It was a fantastic win at Langley Manor when you think they finished third in the league last season. Now we want to build on this at Paultons.

“We are confident and they will not be, having been bowled out for 79.”

In the Langley Manor victory, opener Jack Hersh was the star-of-the-show as he scored a brilliant century, which helped his side to a total of 259 from their 50 overs.

The game saw also saw Hartley’s overseas signing, South African Ari Karvelas, make his debut.

It did not go all to plan for the visitors, as they were reduced to 47-3, but a fourth wicket stand between Hersh (104) and Scott Carter (32) was worth 119 runs and this set the base for the winning score.

Once Carter was out, opening bowler Chris Jolley (36), batting up the order at number six, helped the score past 200 with Hersh as they finished on 259.

Langley Manor were soon in trouble as Tommy Flanders (2-45) sent back both openers with just 17 on the board.

Jamie Terris (26) and Connor Browne (43) repaired the damage as they shared a third-wicket stand worth 49, and the game looked in the balance.

However, Mark Teale (2-27), Hersh (1-17) and Karvelas (1-28) kept the wickets falling and it was left to Will Ross (3-16) to finish off the job as Langley slumped from 168-7 to 173 all out in the 40th over.

Talking about the victory, skipper Jamie Teale said: “Jack Hersh is in excellent form at the moment in another good team performance. We were short of a few first teamers and the guys that stepped up from the twos were fantastic.”
