HERTFORDSHIRE golfer Ryan Newman claimed the spoils when the Jamega Pro Golf Tour visited Dummer Golf Club.

Newman needed a play-off to beat David Dixon of Somerset after the pair finished level on -13 after two rounds at the north Hampshire course.

Newman, who had to birdie the par-five 18th to force a play-off, secured victory by repeating the trick on the first extra hole.

The weather was not particularly kind to the competitors, with heavy rain lashing the course and thick fog causing the second and deciding round to be postponed for several hours.

However, Vanessa Gardiner, sales and marketing manager at Dummer, said the course got rave reviews from the professionals.

“The players I spoke to were all very happy with the course and hosting the Jamega Tour is definitely something that we would do again in the future,” she said. “The whole event went very well and we were really pleased with it.”

The Jamega Pro Golf Tour is a developmental tour for professional golfers from across the south of England, with tournaments taking place across the region over the summer.

Birmingham golfer Ben Russell led after the opening round, thanks to a seven-under-par score of 65. Scoring was even better on day two, with Essex’s Jake Wakelin recording the best round of the tournament, carding an exceptional 10-under-par round of 62.

It was Dixon who claimed the clubhouse lead, following up his first round of 67 (-5) by shooting 64 (-8) on day two, but Newman got the birdie he needed at the last to tie things up with a second round of 65 (-7), before winning the play-off.
