Rickie Lambert: 'Hell of a journey to the World Cup finals'

Basingstoke Gazette: Rickie Lambert Rickie Lambert

Rickie Lambert insists his World Cup call is "hard to take in".

The 32-year-old was playing in a League Two play-off semi-final for Bristol Rovers seven years ago but, having scored 13 Premier League goals for Saints this campaign he is on the plane to Brazil looking to add to his two England goals.

"It has been a hell of a journey to be honest," he said.

"My career on the whole has been so many ups and downs but the last five years, the way it has gone I could never have dreamt it.

"Each year it has been getting better and better and that has been topped off with getting called up for the World Cup.

"I have felt sick for the 24 hours, nervous and anxious but I finally got the call to say I was in the 23 and I was over the moon to say the least.

"I have seen World Cups before the atmosphere always looks unbelievable and it is something I have always dreamt of witnessing and now that I know I'm in the 23 I am going to be there. It is hard to take in really."

With team-mates Shaw and Adam Lallana also included, Lambert believes it is testament to the Saints staff that a trio have made it into the squad.

"Playing in a great team with great lads who I have been playing with for a few years has definitely helped me," he added.

"Playing with good players around you makes it a lot easier for me. It is credit to everyone involved at Southampton. The manager (Mauricio Pochettino) has pushed me on to a new level.

"I was very confident that Ads (Lallana) was going to get in and to hear that Luke Shaw is in as well I was delighted - it is great news."

Emotional day, I was texting my mates, some of them non saints fans, and they all came back with, don't you mean 1 player? I promptly told them where to go.
Otherwise fantastic day for the mighty saints, testament to everyone to the club who have helped make the call ups a possibility.

A living legend. Can't believe people were even questioning if it would be Rickie or Andy Carroll..... Me thinks in June , a Roy of the Rovers scenario in the making....... Southampton goal machine

Pleased for all three getting in the final squad but for Lambert in particular. His journey from the lower leagues to achieving one of the greatest aims for any footballer, to represent their country at a World Cup surpasses any Roy of the Rovers stuff! He has been picked on merit and I have no doubt if at any stage in Brazil next month he has to take a penalty there will be only one place that it's going. Congratulations Rickie and good luck.

My hope is that the only players to go out of the door will be dead wood or surplus to needs....I.E Guly, Osvaldo, Hooliveld etc.
We could always double Adams and Lukes wages....On a lighter note, Its gonna be one heLLL of a world cup....LUKE LALLANA AND LAMBERT.

I can just see it now, world cup final England v Germany and its 1-1 going into the last 15mins and shrek is replaced by SRL. Luke picks the ball up just outside our area and goes on a great run down the wing then passes to lalla who tricks his way past 3 german defenders before chipping a beautiful ball to the back stick where SRL rises superbly and majestically heads the ball past the german keeper who is left rooted to the spot. the stadium erupts in cheers with thousands of fans chanting in unison "rickie lambert englands goal machine". the team come home with the cup and SRL is knighted by the queen whilst lalla and luke are given CBE`s, they will be knighted when England retain the world cup.

I might have dozed off this afternoon! ;0)

My only concern is whether we'll be able to hold on to him after he's won the Golden Boot by scoring three hat-tricks in a row in the group stages.
