  • Basingstoke and North Hants v Hambledon - Match Abandoned
  • Play abandoned due to rain after eight overs, with Hambledon 20-0
  • Basingstoke win the toss and elect to field
  • One change for Bountymen, with Craig Williamson replacing the injured Dean Nurse
  • First Southern League Division One game of the season at May's Bounty

That's a shame, but getting a game on was always going to be a long shot with the weather around today.

Join me again on Monday night, when I'll be at Fratton Park to see Basingstoke Town take on Havant and Waterlooville in the Hampshire Senior Cup final.

After a quick tea, the umpires have another check before calling the game off. Just eight overs' play was possible today.

The rain has stopped and the umpires are back out inspecting. They are likely to rubber-stamp an abandonment.

It's coming down really hard now. I'm told that's game over. We're just waiting for the umpires to officially declare.

And it's drizzling again. That could be fatal to the game.

Seems I was given duff information. There is no re-start time as yet. I think the umpires are hoping to get out again in around 30-40 minutes, but any more rain now and we will run out of time.

So we will have lost more than an hour to rain. It could come down again in the intervening 20 minutes as well.

The umpires are out having another look. Trouble is, we're wasting the good weather waiting for the playing area to dry out.

It looks really nice out there now, but the covers remain on. The square will take some drying out.

The sun's out, and the umpires are having another look. We might have some more cricket soon, but another shower could spell the end.

Rain has stopped again, but I'd imagine it will need to remain dry for at least 20 minutes before they can go back out.

Southern Legaue rules mean that, now they have started, Hambledon must bat out 50 overs, with Basingstoke set a revised target. They must then bat at least 25 overs before we have a match.

The umpires are out inspecting, but it's started drizzling again. Nowhere will you find more amateur weather forecasters than at a cricket match. Everyone's out looking at the skies.

It's a lot brighter now and the rain has stopped. Still could be a while before play resumes.

Over at Hook, the hosts made a good start against Sarisbury. Shane Brewer took two wickets as the visitors were reduced to 28-3 before the rain came.

No sign of the rain stopping at the moment. It was really coming down a couple of minutes ago.

It's eased off now, but I'm not sure how much more the square can take. The pitch should be fine as it's under covers, but the rest of the playing surface will be very slippery.

Looking a bit brighter out there at the moment, and the rain is a bit lighter. Could be an on-off afternoon.

The rain is pretty heavy now. Let's hope it doesn't set in for the afternoon.

Hambledon 20-0 (Collinswells 11, Lavous 6) - 8.1 overs

An extra but the rain is a bit harder now, and the umpires bring the teams off. Grey skies all around as the players put the covers on. Could be off for a little while.

Hambledon 19-0 (Collinswells 11, Lavous 6) - 8 overs

Connor keeps it tight as a shower comes in. Just one off the over.

Hambledon 18-0 (Collinswells 11, Lavous 5) - 7 overs

James' first ball is dropped short and into the slot, with Collinswells driving for the first boundary of the innings. Three more through the covers, looks like they need more fielders that side. Lavous also drops one into the off side for one. Eight off the over.

Hambledon 10-0 (Collinswells 4, Lavous 4) - 6 overs

A nice two for Lavous, dropping the ball behind square on the off side to get the only runs of the over.

Hambledon 8-0 (Collinswells 4, Lavous 2) - 5 overs

Lavous takes the first run off James, a single through the covers. The bowler then puts one down leg side for a wide, but Collinswells has a big swing at the next but misses. Two more there though, Collinswells flicking a short ball through leg side.

Hambledon 4-0 (Collinswells 2, Lavous 1) - 4 overs

Connor beats the bat a couple of times, but Collinswells gets off the mark with a drive through cover, running two. An extra completes the scoring in that over.

Hambledon 1-0 (Collinswells 0, Lavous 1) - 3 overs

More tight bowling from James, whose getting the ball to nip around a bit. Another maiden.

Hambledon 1-0 (Collinswells 0, Lavous 1) - 2 overs

Lavous is left-handed, with Ryan Connor opening the bowling down the hill.

He gets one run through the covers to break the visitors' duck with the final ball of the over.

Hambledon 0-0 (Collinswells 0, Lavous 0) - 1 over

Joe Collinswells opens the batting, with Jack Lavous at the other end. Martyn James takes the ball for the first over.

That's a maiden over. Good start for James.

The players come out on to the field ready to get under way, just as a dark cloud moves over.

The bell just went, so the players should be coming out soon.

Just one change to the Basingstoke line-up. Dean Nurse is out with a thumb injury, so Craig Williamson comes in.

Batsmen: Chris Froud, Andy Fulton, Dan Coombs, Craig Williamson

All-rounders: Andrew Niblett, Martyn James, Graham Porter

Wicket-keeper: Lawrence Benge

Bowlers: Matt Thankachan, Ryan Connor, David Pistorius

Earlier in the week, it looked extremely doubtful that a ball would be bowled today. The forecast was atrocious.

However, while there was plenty of rain around overnight, we have sunshine and blue sky at the moment. Expecting a few showers but the umpires are hopeful that we will get a game in.

Good start to the day for captain Chris Froud. He won the toss and has put the visitors in to bat.

Just spoke to the Basingstoke skipper and he explained that there is a bit of moisture in the pitch, which may help his seam bowlers early on.

Good afternoon and welcome to live over-by-over coverage of Basingstoke and North Hants' first home league game of the season. Hambledon are the visitors to May's Bounty today.
