JUSTIN Rose was left to rue a final-hole lapse at the Wells Fargo Championship, a trip to the water putting him out of contention for victory on Sunday.
The north Hampshire golfer was on -12 after 71 holes, in with an outside chance of winning the event, but he found the water with his second shot at the last and ended up making a double-bogey six.
A final round of 71 (-1) saw him claim fifth place, four shots behind winner JB Holmes, but he would have been in the top three had he been able to make par at the last hole.
All in all, it was a good week for the former Robert May's School pupil, who made eagles in each of his first three rounds. He was three off the lead following an opening round of 69 (-3), and closed to within one shot of the leaders by carding 67 (-5) on the second day.
A third round of 71 (-1) left Rose fifth going into the final day, a position he maintained to retain 10th place in the world rankings.
Rose is in action again this weekend, competing at The Players, an event generally regarded as the unofficial fifth major, at TPC Sawgrass, in Florida, this weekend.
