This live event has finished

  • Basingstoke and North Hants beat Sarisbury by 109 runs
  • Basingstoke lose the toss and are put in to bat
  • Martyn James makes 68 as visitors make 221-8 from their 50 overs
  • Wickets shared around as Sarisbury are bowled out for 112 in reply
  • Opening day of the season in Southern League Division One

That really is a good opening-day victory. Sarisbury finished second in the league last year, missing out on the title by one point. The only side to beat them were champions Burridge.

A fine opening-day win for Basingstoke, who win by 109 runs. Good display all-round.

Phil Jewell - b Thankachan 0

Salisbury 112 all-out (Ingram 6*) - 32.5 overs

And that's that. Another wicket for Thankachan, who clean bowls the Sarisbury number 11.

Dan Goldstraw - b Thankachan 20

Sarisbury 112-9 (Ingram 6, Jewell 0) - 32.3 overs

Goldstraw goes for one too many big shots and is bowled.

Sarisbury 112-8 (Ingram 6, Goldstraw 20) - 32 overs

The hosts work the singles to add four to the score.

Sarisbury 108-8 (Ingram 3, Goldstraw 19) - 31 overs

Another straight six from Goldstraw.

Sarisbury 98-8 (Ingram 1, Goldstraw 12) - 30 overs

Ingram takes a single and Goldstraw's not messing around. Two sixes.

Sarisbury 86-7 (Ingram 0, Goldstraw 0) - 29 overs

Goldstraw sees out the last two balls.

Joe Lovett - b Thankachan 13

Sarisbury 86-8 (Ingram 0, Goldstraw 0) - 28.4 overs

Lovett plays all round that and is bowled.

Sarisbury 85-7 (Lovett 5, Ingram 0) - 28 overs

Another maiden for Pistorius.

Sarisbury 85-7 (Lovett 5, Ingram 0) - 27 overs

Lovett hits Porter through the covers for four.

Sarisbury 81-7 (Lovett 1, Ingram 0) - 26 overs

A double-wicket maiden for Pistorius.

Mark Miller - ct Benge b Pistorius 0

Sarisbury 81-7 (Lovett 1, Ingram 0) 25.3 overs

One dot ball and then Miller is caught by Lawrence Benge behind the stumps.

Kieran Geyle - st Benge b Pistorius 8

Sarisbury 81-6 (Lovett 1, Miller 0) - 25.1 overs

First ball after the break. That turned and Geyle is caught out of his ground.

London Irish lost 38-30 to Gloucester in the Premiership.

In today's football, Reading drew 2-2 with Burnley and missed out on a play-off spot, while Southampton beat Swansea 1-0 thanks to an injury-time strike.

The players are having their drinks break.

Sarisbury 81-5 (Geyle 8, Lovett 9) - 25 overs

Porter's first ball is quick and straight through Lovett. As is the second. Much better bowling. That's four for Lovett though, down to fine leg, and a second, this time through extra cover.

Sarisbury 73-5 (Geyle 8, Lovett 1) - 24 overs

Lovett gets under way with a single, which is followed by Geyle hitting down the ground for four.

Matt Journeaux - ct James b Pistorius 8

Sarisbury 68-5 (Geyle 4, Lovett 0) - 23.2 overs

The off-spin of David Pistorius gets it's first outing of the season, with Niblett replaced. He gets a wicket with his second ball, Journeaux getting under an attempted shot down the ground and holing out to James at mid-off.

Sarisbury 68-4 (Geyle 4, Journeaux 8) - 23 overs

Geyle gets off the mark with a big shot down the ground. Almost a six, but it lands just inside the rope. Despite that, Geyle seems to be struggling a bit. Big swipe at that last ball.

Sarisbury 64-4 (Geyle 0, Journeaux 8) - 22 overs

Journeaux pulls Niblett through the leg side for four, but that's the only scoring shot. A swing and a miss at the final ball.

Sarisbury 60-4 (Geyle 0, Journeaux 4) - 21 overs

The hosts actually had more runs than Basingstoke at 20 overs, but have lost two wickets more. That's a maiden for Porter.

Sarisbury 60-4 (Geyle 0, Journeaux 4) - 20 overs

Almost another run-out, but Journeaux survives to hit four through the covers off Niblett.

Sarisbury 56-4 (Geyle 0, Journeaux 1) - 19 overs

A wide, a no ball and a couple of decent balls complete that over.

Pete Hammond - run out (Coombs) 14

Sarisbury 53-4 (Geyle 0, Journeaux 0) - 18.1 overs

Oh dear. A mix up between the batsmen and Coombs' throw in has Hammond way out of his ground.

Sarisbury 53-3 (Hammond 14, Geyle 0) - 18 overs

Kieran Geyle is the new man in but he cannot get off the mark, so that's a wicket-maiden for Niblett. Those wickets have put Basingstoke in front.

Dave Banks - lbw b Niblett 1

Sarisbury 53-3 (Hammond 14, Geyle 0) - 17.1 overs

Captain Banks misses a straight one to the medium pace of Niblett and is trapped in front of the stumps.

Sarisbury 53-2 (Hammond 14, Banks 1) - 17 overs

Banks is off the mark with his first ball.

Ricky Rawlins - ct Coombs b Porter 30

Sarisbury 52-2 (Hammond 14, Banks 0) - 16.4 overs

Rawlins takes two from Porter but is then caught by Coombs at extra cover.

Sarisbury 50-1 (Rawlins 28, Hammond 14) - 16 overs

Niblett replaces Connor up the hill. His first ball goes for four through the covers to bring up 50, three overs earlier than Basingstoke managed. That's the only scoring shot of the over though.

Sarisbury 46-1 (Rawlins 28, Hammond 10) - 15 overs

First bowling change, with Porter replacing James. He has three overs up his sleeve for later. He starts with a no-ball, and is then turned into leg side for a single to Hammond. Another two singles follow, before another no ball. Five off the over.

Sarisbury 41-1 (Rawlins 27, Hammond 8) - 14 overs

Rawlins goes over mid-on for a four with the fourth ball of the over. He then goes over cover for another boundary. Connor is fuming.

Sarisbury 33-1 (Rawlins 19, Hammond 8) - 13 overs

Nearly a third straight maiden for James, but he just gives Hammond enough space to drive through the covers for a boundary.

Sarisbury 29-1 (Rawlins 19, Hammond 4) - 12 overs

A very rare miss-field from Coombs gifts Rawlins a boundary through the covers, and the same player then hits two more through the same area, much to the annoyance of Connor. Not sure it takes much to annoy him, mind. Now he's admonishing himself for that last delivery.

Sarisbury 23-1 (Rawlins 13, Hammond 4) - 11 overs

Another maiden for James. They're struggling to get him away.

Sarisbury 23-1 (Rawlins 13, Hammond 4) - 10 overs

Big shout for lbw against new batsman Pete Hammond first up, but he's not out. He's soon off the mark, smearing a slightly wide delivery through the covers for a four to end a run of 18 balls without a run. A leg bye moves the score on again.

Archie Norris - ct Niblett b Connor 5

Sarisbury 18-1 (Rawlins 13, Hammond 0) - 9.1 overs

Not a silly shot but the tight lines get to Norris, who nicks to Niblett at second slip.

Sarisbury 18-0 (Rawlins 13, Norris 5) - 9 overs

Another maiden, and that's 15 dot balls in a row. Pressure building on the batsmen. We could see a silly shot soon.

Sarisbury 18-0 (Rawlins 13, Norris 5) - 8 overs

A maiden over for Connor, who was angry when he just missed the edge with his fifth delivery.

Sarisbury 18-0 (Rawlins 13, Norris 5) - 7 overs

Big shout for lbw against Rawlins, but again the umpire is unmoved. He picks up two to third man, but then almost plays on to another James delivery.

Sarisbury 16-0 (Rawlins 11, Norris 5) - 6 overs

Big shout for lbw against Norris first up, but the umpire in unmoved. The batsman replies by smashing the next ball down the ground for four, but then misjudges a full delivery, almost playing on. The rest of the over is dot balls.

Sarisbury 12-0 (Rawlins 11, Norris 1) - 5 overs

Rawlins goes over extra cover to hit the first boundary of the innings off James. He's back to his normal tight lines after that though.

Sarisbury 8-0 (Rawlins 7, Norris 1) - 4 overs

Rawlins hits two through the covers and a single off the last ball through backward point.

Sarisbury 5-0 (Rawlins 4, Norris 1) - 3 overs

Rawlins breaks the shackles of James, going over the top in the leg side to get two runs. Norris goes for the same shot, but catches a leading edge and the ball flies just over Nurse at third slip.

Sarisbury 2-0 (Rawlins 1, Norris 1) - 2 overs

Ryan Connor opens at the other end. The first run goes to Norris off his fourth delivery. Rawlins follows up with another one.

Sarisbury 0-0 (Rawlins 0, Norris 0) - 1 over

Ricky Rawlins and Archie Norris are the Sarisbury openers. Rawlins is first to face James, leaving the first five outside off stump. He played at the final one, but missed, so it's a maiden to start.

The bell sounds for the start of the Sarisbury innings.

The Basingstoke team are back out warming up for an afternoon in the field. Have to say, I was impressed by their pre-match warm-up. Much more porefessional than I have ever seen from a Basingstoke side before. No sign of a football.

That's a pretty good innings. They started off a bit slowly, but accelerated at the right time and it's a score that sets the second innings up well.

Reading have missed out on a place in the Championship play-offs after drawing 2-2 with Burnley.

Basingstoke end their innings on 221-8.

Matt Thankachan - ct Hammond b Jewell 3

Basingstoke and North Hants 221-8 (Benge 3*) - 50 overs

New man in Lawrence Benge gets three from his first ball but Thankachan is caught by Hammond off the final ball to bring the innings to an end.

Martyn James - b Jewell 67

Basingstoke and North Hants 218-7 (Thankachan 3, Benge 0) - 49.3 overs

A single for Thankachan is followed by a two for James, but that's him out. He went for a big pull, but missed, and the ball hit.

Basingstoke and North Hants 215-6 (James 65, Thankachan 2) - 49 overs

Good running gets the visitors a two and four singles. Solid stuff.

Basingstoke and North Hants 209-6 (James 61, Thankachan 0) - 48 overs

James glances the ball to third man for three with the last delivery of the over.

Graham Porter - ct Hammond b Jewell 25

Basingstoke and North Hants 206-6 (James 58, Thankachan 0) - 47.5 overs

Jewell is back into the attack. James takes a single in the leg side off the first ball, while Porter gets a two next up. Another couple of singles but Porter goes for another six and is caught on the boundary by Pete Hammond. Matt Thankachan is next in.

Basingstoke and North Hants - 201-5 (James 57, Porter 22) - 47 overs

James takes a two followed by a single to start the over. Porter takes a single, dropping the ball in the covers, while that's a big swing and a miss from James. Another single for him, while Porter ends the over with a flourish, smashing a six down the ground.

Basingstoke and North Hants 190-5 (James 53, Porter 15) - 46 overs

James brings up his 50 with a four off the first ball, getting a single the next ball. His 50 came off 63 balls, an important innings. Porter just digs out a Yorker and then survives a stumping appeal, but is struggling to score.

Basingstoke and North Hants 185-5 (James 48, Porter 15) - 45 overs

James takes a single off the first ball, while Porter's shot over the top gets plugged in the wet ground. He gets two, with two more following the two balls after.

Basingstoke and North Hants 178-5 (James 47, Porter 9) - 44 overs

The measley Goldstraw is back on, bowling to James. The batsman misses the first ball, but takes a single off the second. Porter, like many before him, can't get the medium pacer away. A good over for the hosts.

Basingstoke and North Hants 177-5 (James 46, Porter 9) - 43 overs

Ingram replaces the wayward Lovett, but James dismisses his short ball, pulling it for six over square leg. The bowler drops it short again, and it's the same result, clearing the fielder on the boundary, before keeping the strike with a single off the final delivery.

Basingstoke and North Hants 164-5 (James 33, Porter 9) - 42 overs

James smashes a four, with a wide and two singles giving Basingstoke seven off that one. That's the end of Geyle's spell.

Basingstoke and North Hants 158-5 (James 28, Porter 9) - 41 overs

Porter squirts an edge through the vacant slip cordon for two, while the second ball is a no ball, with Porter also getting a run. Another no ball follows, with a single to James next up.

Lovett has got a bit scrappy, and that's another wide. Porter then gets a single, with James adding two more. 11 off.

Basingstoke and North Hants 147-5 (James 25, Porter 4) - 40 overs

A wide is followed by Porter getting three through backward point, but no further runs from that.

Basingstoke and North Hants 143-5 (James 25, Porter 1) - 39 overs

A change to the bowling, with opener Lovett coming back in place of Miller. He bowls two dot balls before sending down a wide, but next up his attempted bouncer is hooked to square leg for four by James.

He then takes a single, while another attempted bouncer ends up being a wide. Porter digs out a Yorker for a single, before James smashes a short ball through mid wicket for four. An expensive over.

Basingstoke and North Hants 131-5 (James 16, Porter 0) - 38 overs

New man Graham Porter sees out the last two balls.

Andrew Niblett - lbw b Geyle 20

Basingstoke and North Hants 131-5 (James 16, Porter 0) - 37.4 overs

Niblett puts the opening ball through the covers and it's missed by a fielder. The batsman slips though, so it's only one. James then takes a single but Niblett then misses a straight one and is given out leg before wicket.

Basingstoke and North Hants 129-4 (Niblett 19, James 15) - 37 overs

Niblett smashes four down the ground, then takes a smart single. James sees out the rest of the over.

Basingstoke and North Hants 124-4 (Niblett 14, James 15) - 36 overs

A rare miss-field gives Niblett a two, but that's better fielding, a great stop denying him a four, keeping it down to one. James goes aerial over square leg and gets four, before surviving an appeal for caught behind off the final delivery.

Basingstoke and North Hants 117-4 (Niblett 11, James 11) - 35 overs

Niblett takes a single off the first ball. More decent fielding means that's the only run of the over.

Basingstoke and North Hants 116-4 (Niblett 10, James 11) - 34 overs

Niblett gets a single off the first ball of the over, but that's it.

Basingstoke and North Hants 115-4 (Niblett 9, James 11) - 33 overs

A two for James to square leg is followed by four down the ground.

Basingstoke and North Hants 109-4 (Niblett 9, James 5) - 32 overs

A wide and singles for both batsmen move the score on by three. James' run was a streaky one, an edge flying up in the air but landing safe.

Basingstoke and North Hants 106-4 (Niblett 8, James 4) - 31 overs

Niblett takes a single, with James taking advantage of a final ball full toss to get his first runs by pulling to the boundary.

Basingstoke and North Hants 101-4 (Niblett 7, James 0) - 30 overs

Just one wide prevents Geyle picking up a maiden.

Dan Coombs - ct Banks b Miller 37

Basingstoke and North Hants 100-4 (Niblett 7, James 0) - 29 overs

Four dot balls from Miller before Coombs turns him to mid-wicket for two. Looking good, but Coombs spoons the final ball up in the air and wicket-keeper Banks makes good ground to claim the catch. Martyn James is the new batsman.

Basingstoke and North Hants 98-3 (Coombs 35, Niblett 7) - 28 overs

Niblett takes two off the first ball, then there's a wide before Niblett gets one and Coombs hits two fours down to fine leg. Another one through the covers for Coombs to end a good over.

Basingstoke and North Hants 85-3 (Coombs 26, Niblett 4) - 27 overs

Change to the bowling, with Mark Miller, replacing the impressive Jewell. He's a medium pace right-armer. Two of his first three deliveries are leg-side wides, but they are the only runs of the over.

Basingstoke and North Hants 83-3 (Coombs 26, Niblett 4) - 26 overs

Coombs gets a single with the first ball of the over, but Geyle keeps it tight after that.

The visitors need to up their scoring rate in the second half of the innings. Sarisbury have bowled well so far.

Basingstoke and North Hants 82-3 (Coombs 25, Niblett 4) - 25 overs

Coombs knocks off a single and Niblett gets off the mark with a boundary. Time for a drinks break.

Dean Nurse - ct Rawlins b Geyle 11

Basingstoke and North Hants 77-3 (Coombs 24, Niblett 0) - 24 overs

Nurse smashes that delivery, the last of the over, straight to Ricky Rawlins at mid-wicket. In comes new overseas player Andrew Niblett.

A change to the bowling. Goldstraw has been replaced, with left-arm spinner Kieran Geyle replacing him.

That's a pie first-up, a full toss that Nurse dispatches for four through the leg side. A dot is followed by a single for each batsman, but, oh no.

Basingstoke and North Hants 71-2 (Coombs 23, Nurse 6) - 23 overs

Two dot balls before Nurse turns the third delivery into the leg side for one. A half-hearted appeal for leg before against Coombs is followed by a terrible miss-field, turning a tight single into a boundary.

Basingstoke and North Hants 66-2 (Coombs 19, Nurse 5) - 22 overs

A single off the first two balls, but Sarisbury fielded well to stop both being more. That's four though, Coombs pulling nicely through the leg side, while a full toss the following ball gets another four. 10 off the over, a shame for Goldstraw's figures.

Basingstoke and North Hants 56-2 (Coombs 10, Nurse 4) - 21 overs

A single to Coombs from the opening ball, while Nurse sees off two deliveries before taking a tight single down the ground. Coombs turns one off his legs to keep the strike with the final ball.

Basingstoke and North Hants 53-2 (Coombs 8, Nurse 3) - 20 overs

Good fielding means Coombs only gets one for that nice pull shot. More tight bowling from Goldstraw.

Basingstoke and North Hants 52-2 (Coombs 7, Nurse 3) - 19 overs

Nurse gets off the mark with a two first up, but then gets a bit steaky. He's lucky to survive one that stays low, while a Chinese cut earns him two, but only one goes into the book as he was short of his ground turning around.

Basingstoke and North Hants 49-2 (Coombs 7, Nurse 0) - 18 overs

Three off that one bowled by Goldstraw, a wide and two leg-byes.

Basingstoke and North Hants 46-2 (Coombs 7, Nurse 0) - 17 overs

The batsmen crossed, so Coombs is on strike. He takes a three with the penultimate ball and Nurse sees out the final delivery.

Andy Fulton - ct Norris b Jewell 21

Basingstoke and North Hants 43-2 (Coombs 4, Nurse 0) - 16.2 overs

Fulton scoops a leading edge to Archie Norris in the covers. An easy catch.

Basingstoke and North Hants 43-1 (Fulton 21, Coombs 4) - 16 overs

Fulton gets a single, with only some decent fielding at mid-on stopping him getting more. That's four though, Coombs steering one down to third man to get off the mark.

Basingstoke and North Hants 38-1 (Fulton 20, Coombs 0) - 15 overs

Coombs isn't able to get off the Mark in the remaining five balls and that's a wicket-maiden. Really tight lines being bowled.

Chris Froud - lbw b Jewell 13

Basingstoke and North Hants 38-1 (Fulton 20, Coombs 0) - 14.2 overs

Froud misses a straight one from the metronomic Jewell and that's out. Dan Coombs is in at number three.

Basingstoke and North Hants 38-0 (Froud 13, Fulton 20) - 14 overs

Froud nudges the first ball down leg side for a single, while Goldstraw then gives away a rare wide. A fielding mistake in the covers gives Fulton two off the final ball.

Basingstoke and North Hants 34-0 (Froud 12, Fulton 18) - 13 overs

Another bowling change as Phil Jewell, a right-arm medium pacer, replaces Lovett.

Froud places one through the leg side for a single, but that's all they can manage. Really tight bowling.

Basingstoke and North Hants 33-0 (Froud 11, Fulton 18) - 12 overs

Goldstraw is really difficult to get away. Fulton just about gets bat on one delivery, otherwise that would have been plum. Another maiden.

Basingstoke and North Hants - 33-0 (Froud 11, Fulton 18) - 11 overs

Froud clips four to square leg to relieve the pressure a bit. Runs had dried up before that. Almost a suicidal run afterwards though, they just about make their ground. Big swing and a miss from Froud to end the over, but no harm done.

Basingstoke and North Hants 29-0 (Froud 7, Fulton 18) - 10 overs

A group of Hook players have just arrived to watch. They could have stayed at home and followed it online! Their game is obviously off.

A good over from Goldstraw, who is medium pace off a spinner's run. A maiden indeed.

Basingstoke and North Hants 29-0 (Froud 7, Fulton 18) - 9 overs

Fulton knocks a single to fine leg with the first ball of the over, but it's tight bowling other than that. Just one off the over.

Basingstoke and North Hants 28-0 (Froud 7, Fulton 17) - 8 overs

That's the first bowling change, with Dan Goldstraw coming on for Ingram.

He has a great record in this level and he's a very accurate left-arm spinner. Fulton gets one off his second ball, but that's all they can muster.

Basingstoke and North Hants 27-0 (Froud 7, Fulton 16) - 7 overs

Fulton edges the first ball into the gap where second slip would have been, but there's nobody there, so that's four.

A couple of balls later, he gets off strike with a single, while Froud picks up two with a strange pick- up shot into leg side with the final ball of the over.

Basingstoke and North Hants 20-0 (Froud 5, Fulton 11) - 6 overs

Just two runs, a leg-bye and a run to Fulton.

Basingstoke and North Hants 18-0 (Froud 5, Fulton 9) - 5 overs

Another four to Fulton, who seems to be intent on making the hosts pay for that drop early on.

Basingstoke and North Hants 14-0 (Froud 5, Fulton 5) - 4 overs

A leg bye for Froud, but that the first boundary, Fulton creaming one to the rope.

Basingstoke and North Hants 7-0 (Froud 5, Fulton 1) - 3 overs

Just the one scoring shot, Froud getting a two that might have been a boundary on a drier outfield.

Basingstoke and North Hants 5-0 (Froud 3, Fulton 1) - 2 overs

Joe Lovett, another right-arm seamer, opens the bowling at the other end, with Fulton facing.

He nearly gets a wicket with his first ball, Fulton edging to wicket-keeper and captain Dave Banks, but he fails to hold on to a smart chance.

The next ball is a wide, followed by a dot ball, before Fulton picks up a single to extra-cover.

Froud gets a bouncer, which he hits straight in the air, but there's nobody under it and they run one. Fulton sees out the last two balls.

Basingstoke and North Hants 2-0 (Froud 2, Fulton 0) - 1 over

James Ingram, a right-arm seamer, opens the bowling for Sarisbury. Froud takes strike for the visitors. Andy Fulton is at the other end.

Froud has a go at the first delivery, but hits straight to cover. Three more dot balls follow, with Froud only just evading edging one of them.

He glances the last ball to fine leg. Two runs.

Not a great start for new Basingstoke captain Chris Froud, who lost the toss. Basingstoke will bat first.

We're about to get under way.

Good afternoon and welcome to live over-by-over coverage of Basingstoke and North Hants' trip to Sarisbury on the opening day of the Southern League Division One season.
